  • The UN General Assembly has voted to establish an annual day to commemorate the Srebrenica genocide.
It has made July 11 the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, putting the crime on par with the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide. On this day in 1995, the Bosnian Serb forces captured Srebrenica and over the following days, massacred eight thousand unarmed Bosnian Muslim men and teenagers.
The resolution has been adopted despite fierce opposition from Bosnian Serbs and Serbian leadership. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is at the United Nations. Ahead of the vote, he said the measure would deepen divisions in the region.
For the latest on this we are joined by DW Washington bureau chief Ines Pohl at the UN headquarters in New York and DW reporter Aida Salihbegović is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the city of Mostar.

The real truth (that is, if my comment doesn't get censored, since lies are usually preferred): Srebrenica was a military base from which attacks were launched on Serbian villages. Bosniak extremists tortured and killed at least 4000 Serbian kids, elderly and women in the villages around Srebrenica (just google Kravica massacre or Bratunac massacre). When the Serbs captured Srebrenica they killed these butchers and let Bosniak women, children and the elderly go. There were fewer than 5000 deats, and all were men, many of whom were war criminals as I described before. Following the end of the war the Bosniaks systematically inflated the number of deats by bringing bodies from the battlefield and putting tomb stones on empty graves - that is how they come up with this number of 8700+ victims. I personally know a couple of people who are very much alive and working in Germany and Austria who have their graves in Srebrenica.

Sometimes so-called genocide denial is completely justified. This is one of those times. Anyone who takes the trouble to do some serious reading about the incident is left in no doubt that the whole thing was a fabricated frame-up to justify Nato intervention on the side of Bosnia. Excavations in the area have come up with just a fraction of the 8,000 figure and many of those had died in combat, not by execution. Yes, after the town fell, there were some retaliatory executions of Bosnian men who had engaged in murder raids on Serb civilians in the months preceding, but it was not a major massacre, and definitely not a genocide.

It’s about recognizing the day. This isn’t against all Serbian people anyone can read the draft and see with their own eyes. Those who have done this and ordered this have been arrested and are already in jail. Those who have abstained if you all watched still said that “yes it was a Genocide” however most were afraid that this will cause tensions in the regions and didn’t want to do anything with it. That’s exactly what Serbian president wanted, he wanted to scare everyone when he was saying remarks such as the one that I mentioned. If you don’t believe me just google Milorad Dodik(Serb leader in Bosnia) and you will see how many times he threatened if this passes and he is Vucics puppet. There are petitions in Belgrade from young people who are writing to UN that support the resolution and that they don’t agree with what their president is doing. A lot of this isn’t out in the open. All Serbian people are not genocidal people and that’s not what this is about. It’s only a Remembrance Day and basically talks about that nobody can glorify those who have committed these acts, which today while this was happening a soccer team from Banja Luka (Serbian Entity of Bosnia) were chanting Ratko Mladić name and glorifying him. That’s what need to stop. We all need to live in peace.
