- The Praetorian is an elite type alien. Its one of the larger Xenomorphs, and is able to evolve into a Queen! They are supreme defenders of the hive, and excellent leaders in battle. But there are many different aliens that are called Praetorians, what makes them unique, and what common traits do they share? Examples from AVP video games, movies, Role playing games, and novels.

I remember back in AVP 2010 you could unlock the praetorian as a skin with the alien at like.....level 16 or 19 (something like that) and i remember i was grinding the game and i got sooo close to getting him but for some reason, everytime i closed the game and went back on i would reset back like 6 levels and this happened around 3 or 4 times so i just gave up

I think it was in 2010 Avp you had to fight them as the marine. I rememeber the pulse rifle or whatever I was using just bouncing off the crest and body. Very tough.
Don't know if you knew this, but they are also in Aliens: Fireteam Elite, and on harder difficulties the bullets bounce off and can ricochet back on you OR your team mates. They did a great job w/ that game.

This is for the most part very well explained, except for ONE correction on the regular Alien height. Big Chap and Warriors are measured in the lines of 8-9ft tall. This is even confirmed in the size scale of the NECA figures where all figures human and Alien are basically mirrored in the Inches sizes. The Runner Alien in ALIEN 3 was sized at 8ft tall, but was larger in some parts, but Ripley had in fact informed Superintendent Andrews about the height of the creatures she had already faced before on LV-426, again, 8ft tall. As for the Alien Queen, yes, she is 15ft as per James Cameron and the late Stan Winston confirmations.
Remember playing the pretorian in multi-player for avp2 on the pc. Dude couldn't climb walls but he damn near could take fire from a mini gun as close range.

yeah the directors of the movie calling Predalien "a young queen" which is technically makes it a Praetorian.
Also there was a full grown Predalien Queen in AVP extinction for Predator campaign.
Personally, kind of hate the "Royal Jelly" idea.
I prefer the metamorphosis of Drone > Praetorian > Queen to be based more on Time, Age, and Pheromones rather then the presence of Royal Jelly.
As a Hive develops, the oldest living Drones become Praetorians
As the Hive grows larger, more Praetorians are allowed to develop. If there are too many within the boundaries, then the pheromones they always emit will prevent new drones from moulting. Expanding the hive to take up a larger area would allow for more Praetorians to develop as the air is less saturated with this pheromone.
Similarly, the Queen also emits a Pheromone that blocks Praetorians from developing into new queens. If there is none or not enough of this pheromone in the air, then the oldest Praetorian(s) begin moulting into queens, likely fighting off any other moulting Praetorians in the process.
If the hive takes up a large enough area, then multiple queens can exist within the same Hive, with the oldest and largest being designated as the Empress.
With this, there is no need for Royal Jelly. Any one individual Drone can start it's own hive if left alone for long enough, making the Xenomorphs even more terrifying as all they need is a single surviving member to restart the entire process all over again. The existence of Royal Jelly just means that a lone Drone is stuck as a Drone forever if there is none present, which begs the question of "Where do the queens that make the Jelly come from in the first place?".
Maybe the Jelly just speeds up the process or allows target drones to develop into higher stages even if they're not old enough to do it, or if the pheromones in the air would usually block the process, basically a bypass to allow a hive to grow more and Praetorians and Queens then time and size would normally allow. But idk, i just feel like it's existence is kind of contrived and unnecessary.

Its existence is probably the filmmakers wanting Xenomorphs to work like bees down to almost every detail. For example I believe bees chew wax to bond it to honeycomb to make beehives, and xenomorphs excrete their weird resin saliva that works as walls for their hive. I’m not an expert on this though so I might’ve gotten some of that wrong.
I imagine the “royal jelly” stuff is just the writers mimicking bees again. Ironically in some ways bees are actually superior to Xenomorphs because there’s plenty of nursing bees that secrete royal jelly as well to feed larvae as far as I know. So they can still produce it even if their queen bee is dead. (might be slightly different between species? Idk)
I agree though, it would make them way more deadly if they ditched the idea of the reliance on the royal jelly and made any drone able to start its own hive.

The Pretorians my favorite Xenomorphs type for all time.
A Crusher is simply a Praetorian evolved from a Dog Alien/Runner type Xenomorph. We really need a Neca ultimate deluxe of the Praetorian, Fireteam Elite finally brought them back in the games.
Really like that concept NGL. Gives the Xenomorphs more reason to adopt a variety of hosts for the genetic variation. or at the very least show that they can adapt to their environment by using hosts from that enviroment.

Praetorians are the queens guards and also the commander, but do praetorians have the ability to physically stop or restrict the actions of a xenomorph? Well, Predalien has the power to physically stop xenomorphs from attempting to kill a host, do praetorians have anything similiar
