    I'm also an Apple watch user and I just got my first ever Garmin! I'd have loved the EPIX but I have a really small wrist, so I opted for Garmin Fenix 6s instead. I totally agree with all the points you mentioned in the video! And Garmin did win me over despite a high price tag. This is how I justify Garmin's higher price tag: 1. if you're looking for a more durable casing for the watch, AW and Garmin are actually priced around the same. The stainless steel version of Apple Watch is almost $800 and you don't get any additional features besides the different casing material. 2. AW is really lacking in its fitness and health features. In order to accommodate the lacking, you may need to install 3rd party apps and most of them do ask for a subscription fee each month. Let's say you pay ~$20 on all the 3rd party subscriptions, that's $240 additional a year. So even though the base model AW appears to be cheaper up front, if you calculate all the subscriptions you pay in order to make AW more usable for fitness and outdoors, it's not really cheaper than the Garmin. With the Garmin, you don't need to install any other apps.

      @@JBOutside1 Yeah if they ever fix those deficiencies I'd go back and give the AW another try. But so far, I'm been waiting for them to update their fitness app for a few years now, and they've only upgraded AW's other functions but not in the fitness area.... so I don't know. But tbh, I think the direction that Apple's taking the AW is different from that of Garmin. Garmin is like 80% fitness and 20% others functions, while AW is 20% fitness and 80 others.

    Have had Fenix watches since the the original, and now I have the Epix Gen2 which essentially is a Fenix but with AMOLED. The BEST thing Garmin did was AMOLED, AND I bet Garmin brings out a 51mm Solar AMOLED in the months to come. I am super happy with the 47mm size of the Epix and I use it via buttons instead of touch simply due to muscle memory after so many Garmin's. Great video JB, and respect the conclusion you came to! I ultimately ended up returning my Epix because I couldn’t escape the hold the Apple Watch had on my daily life for daily use. There are times I miss the Epix though. If not for the drastic price (compared to my AW7 aluminum 45mm) I think I would’ve kept it. Not ruling out a repurchase of the Epix in the future, but I think I’ll wait and see how I feel and revisit in a few months. My AW7 does the trick for me and I’m in an urban landscape in CA without nearby trails, so for this the AW handles just fine.
    I think the best way to determine how/if you can live without the Apple Watch is definitely to sell it. I say you continue this video blog with this topic! Chronicle your life after your Apple Watch and how you cope with just having the Epix 😂 it might make for an interesting video!

    I have had 2 Garmin Fenix watches now, both in sapphire screen editions and have loved them. The 2 main deal breakers for the Apple Watch for me are durability and battery. I cracked a screen within 2 months on my Apple Watch, not from dropping it, just regular use stuff. And I have never even left a scuff on my Fenix, it's bullet proof. I also use my watch for an alarm to not wake up my wife, the battery on the Apple Watch is so terrible you can't do that. I always had "charge anxiety" with it, which made its cool features useless for me. Not sure I'll upgrade to a 7, since I have a 6X sapphire, but Garmin wins for me hands down.

    The pros of the AW and cons of the Epix2 are actually not pros for me or cons. I enjoy the idea that I'm only carrying one cell signal device as well as microphone, just in the name of security. I can put my iphone in a faraday bag but wouldn't do it to an AW and therefor feel more connected to "the grid" with one. The Epix2 is perfect. Also, I wanted the Fenix 7 until I found out the solar power only extends the battery and also means they couldn't use true sapphire glass. Great review, I agree with pretty much everything you said. I'm back and forth between iOS and Android, currently with an AW7 and a Fenix 5 but tried out the Epix for a couple weeks, loved it but the price for the base model is just so nasty (almost $1300 Canadian up here) that I sent it back. Tempted to try again tho since the Fenix 5 series lacks quite a few or the more recent features. AW7 really is great for ecosystem-centric features and works in a pinch for moderate fitness use especially with Workoutdoors installed, but the Epix really is a fitness beast. My logic was that the Epix price simply wasn't justified when it costs more than an AW7 AND a Fenix 6 Pro combined!

      Considering that "value" goes to zero in 2-3 years due to speed of technology progress... I bought "Forerunner" twice (latest one was Forerunner 230 from 2017); last year I bought Apple Watch; and now I am thinking about Garmin again... because during a day I do 16 small exercises (such as single-arm 8kg kettlebell swings, 16x32x2x8kg = [almost] 1000 swings of 8kg) - but it will be hard to do other kettlebell exercises with watch on your arm anyway.
      And also because I want something with great maps on it (I can separately buy fishing maps...) - but perhaps I can do it with Apple Watch too...
      LTE is huge issue: I use my Apple Watch with TELUS (Canada), I can answer calls during run. That is super huge win.
      But just for fitness monitoring... if you have heart issue you will feel it without monitor. If you overtrained for instance.
      Maps, I need good maps... but maybe I should buy handheld Garmin instead.

The Epix has won me over too and it has become my primary watch. I do sometimes miss the voice dictation for text replies, but that usually didn't work half of the time on the Apple Watch anyway, so it's not that big of a deal to just get out of my phone (at least the notifications are spot on). Today I went on a run with the Apple Watch and Epix side by side and my Apple watch dyied after 1 1/4h (the battery is used a lot last year) which was my main reason to switch and the Epix is a great sports watch. JB, would love to get a video update of your time with the Epix!
    For me, I did two purchase and returns and went back to the AW both times. I just couldn’t stomach the price tag. However, I’ve had the forerunner 955 for over a week now and have really been enjoying it. Loving the value, it’s basically Epix software in a cheaper package, albeit no AMOLED or sturdy form factor. Still, this might be the garmin that sticks! That is, until the fall. The new AW updates are right up my alley as a runner. Can’t wait to see what apple has in store this fall!

      @@JBOutside1 I’m realistic, too. I could see myself easily slipping back to Apple Watch when the Garmin isn’t as new and shiny anymore. Also, if the rumored “Explorer” AW does come, the 955 can easily be sold on eBay for a recoup of funds

  • @erikdebeen5838
    @erikdebeen5838 Pƙed 2 lety +1

    So basically it's about battery life. And wanting to find and purchase the right 3rd party apps. If you already have strava you have the maps. If you have komoot you have even more maps. If you have a stryd you have more running data than a garmin, but it also works on a garmin. If you buy an app like strong you have a full gym workout on your wrist. Eveything is neatly integrated in apple health, but not all does come prepackaged with the watch. For garmin this is the case.
    Basically both do more or less the same, at least, you can make your AW do the same, but the AW is empty more early. BTW: I workout 1-2 hours a day and I get about 48 hours of regular use out of the AW... and actually I have never ran out, also not when hiking the alps for a full day, or even days (because I have this cool solar panel that I wear on my backpakc & use to charge my phone & watch at night).
    If you really want multiple days of gps activities, like ultratrails, or longer hikes without charging then Garmin wins. If you are able to charge at least every other day the AW will do fine as well. In the end both will suffice for >95% of people and it comes down to preference.
    In the end I use the wallet, 2 factor authentication a lot as well. So for me the AW wins. I however totally understand the people that prefer the Garmin watches.

    • @JBOutside1
      @JBOutside1  Pƙed 2 lety +1

    Brilliant, video, like you I’m embedded in the Apple ecosystem but wanted something that gives me more detail in relation to training data so I’ve been waiting a few weeks for this review, but
 in the meantime, I bought a FENIX 6 PRO SOLAR as I managed to find one for £400 which was a massive reduction vs the EPIX 2 (half the price) - I was going to get the EPIX 2 but this deal was too good to miss. It’s my first venture into the Garmin world and I’m so so pleased - I may
.sell this and buy an Epix 2 as there are a few additional features I do like, but I couldn’t justify the extra £400 at the time so I may wait for a price drop - interestingly, just like you, I’m not missing the notifications, and also, some of the things I ‘thought’ I needed on the AW, I’m not actually missing, in fact, the only significant one is actually Apple Pay, because Garmin pay isn’t very good!

    Great video but you’ll be back to Apple within the year :) I’ve done this move many times and always come back as you’ll realize Garmin essentially uses their customers as beta testers for their updates and products .. Garmin is the buggiest system I’ve ever used and Apple OS is bulletproof. Also, as a Dad , AW has ability to call emergency services within seconds from the wrist, all Garmin can do is alert your contacts which is useless.

    Can I ask, what are you going to do about the lack of messaging? What are you thinking long term about notifications in general, all on or all off when paired with an iPhone. I'm so on the fence here currently rocking an AW 7 SS LTE, though I want the training metrics the Garmin has all in one place. I'm kinda not liking the idea of not being able to take the watch out running or even the back yard without being able to communicate if I don't want to carry a phone. I've even considered the idea of switching to a Samsung S22+ just so I can keep in touch when I need to, but that brings headache of its own with photos. What are you thinking long term? Cheers and loved your point of view here.

      This certainly is the biggest hurdle when it comes to the transition. The easy answer is: you do without. But in reality I still get notified in rich detail on the Epix and I don't feel like I'm that disconnected. I didn't input text not he AW (except via voice). The LTE is a feature I'd love to see in the next iteration of Fenix/Epix watches, but just for the connectivity. Thanks for watching!
