- If you want to make a coonskin cap that drapes down your back you will need 2 raccoon pelts. If you're wanting to do the classic Davy Crockett style you can usually get by with 1...it really depends on how big your coon is and how big your head is!
I remember many years ago in the Austin , Texas newspaper, there was an article with a picture of a guy wearing a hat made from a cat skin. Lots of people were unhappy about that.
😂 wow
As a texan if you hear anything from Austin do not let that blemish the rest of texas's image because to me they are not Texans lol they are weird
Oh yeah, 1 1/2 racoon pelts, I've got those in the pantry next to the flour! LOL Loving this video man. Thank you for making it
😅😂
Great video and awesome looking hat man 👊
I'm making my 1st hat soon, got a great deal oh 8 beautiful cinnamon raccoon furs🍻

Heck ya!
I love this. I would love to see more of this type of content from you in the future
Good to know!
Looks great! I had one in elementary school without the face. Not sure whatever happened to it...probably still at my parents somewhere lol 🦝
By far the easiest method I've seen. Thanks!
Glad to help!

Hey man. Recently discovered your channel, watched a few videos, and listened to the band on Spotify. Did you make all that music yourself? I love it. It’s hard to find that kind of “mountain man folk” music.
Thanks so much! Yep, all my songs!
@@HawkenHorse You don’t happen to have a merch store do you? Not to be a crazy fan and all, but I really do like the overall theme of the music. It’s relaxing and folkish. Music you could hike or fish to, while still being deep in its subject matter. A man who’s content to die on a mountainside with a bible and a rifle, and no one knows what became of him, but he knows he lived a full life. That’s the “spirit of the west” in my mind.
@@morganmorris97 thanks so much! That’s definitely the theme I’m going for! Yes I have merch at hawkenhorse.com
@@HawkenHorse Definitely gotta get me a Coonalope shirt lol. I think you’d like “Man Vs History”’s channel. He does a lot of the same content you do, has his own shop as well, and does a lot of historical accuracy videos.
@@morganmorris97 I’ll check that one out!!
Definitely turned out awesome with the face showing. Excellent job.
Thank you!
I will make one of a rabbit because in central Mexico there are no raccoons,Should the circular cap have the same circumference of the straight part that measures the head?
I made the top bigger only because of the raccoon face. But if you’re doing a rabbit I’d probably just cut it without the face at the same circumference. 👍
Se ven mas tradicional canadiense pero como soy de México no puedo cazando un conejo pero me gusta como lo hace un gorro de mapache saludos desde México también Canadá 🇨🇦🇲🇽
✌️howdy!
@@HawkenHorse Thank you
Where can I get that book!
I found one on eBay!
How long has the hat lasted
Still holding up!
You don't suppose oil on your needle would help
That’s a good idea
What stitch did you use for this
I used a back stitch.
@@HawkenHorse thanks
You are fucking awesome dude thanks a lot for this. What is that book called where you had found that pattern? I spent almost an hour looking online until I came across this video
The book has been reprinted under a different name. Look up “Traditional Skills of the Mountain Men” by David Montgomery. Glad to help!
Hey are you from the UP?
I’m not from the UP but I’ve spent a lot of time up there!
Do you treat the leather (inside of hat) with oil?
I haven’t yet but I likely will. It’s good to treat it annually.
@@HawkenHorse what type of oil do you recommend?
Heard leather homey is gr8 for it
@@jerseyhomestead6812
What is the name and author of that book?
Mountainman Crafts and Skills
by David R. Montgomery
Where i can buy that book
Mountainman Crafts and Skills

@@HawkenHorse thanks
You don't use scissors to cut furs Bud.
Haha I needed precision
What do you use
a knife and cut from the leather side, not the fur side.@@NotPearse
