- Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate Part 3 - my strongest build yet. It's always nice when you become so powerful, you can speedrun the game. Let's hope I can keep this momentum going into the hardest difficulties.

Definately my assassin build.
This was in the demo, before the nerf to the sacrificial knife, I had the king at 1 hp, reached him quickly using free soul movement, and a power boosted shotgun to kill him through his own units.
I got so far in endless (only mode back then) that the board started with half the board filled with white units.
I considered this a true victory since half the board is like all of his units and all my own converted black ones.

i love how every rogue-like has that one build that turns it into a cake walk, but it requires almost every single component or it fall apart. what's amazing to me about tyler is its obvious how much happens in his videos that we don't see, all the failed runs and the time spent strategizing
I love that gimmick in rouge likes, my favorite is the slime ring + all items that trigger in enemies death in otherworld legends
It is just a complete room and boss cleaner if you play it right
Like the fact that he never showed the moat before but mentioned that he wanted it
Hell some of the most prominent ones have SEVERAL.
Take the binding of Isaac for example, I can come up with several builds that take seemingly terrible items and combines them into an unstoppable force.
After Watching Northernlion play this game, it made me realize that the game is a lot harder than you make it look

I love NL, easily my favorite content creator rn. I think he genuinely just gets tilted and makes hasty, bad decisions in this game. I watched him and was like "no way it's this hard" bought the game, and won first try on Normal lol. Granted I also watch Tyler and have watched all 3:30 of the NL attempt so I had some intel going in, but I'm still unconvinced the game would have been that hard going in blind.
@@IAmTheWar NL is entertaining, but he's definitely far from skilled at these kinds of games. I don't really watch him often, but I do notice him making a lot of mistakes that probably a lot of slightly above average players will catch. There's a reason after all that a lot of people initially bought Slay the Spire because they wanted to not make his mistakes.
Yeah, as someone who is bad at chess, I can confirm. Game is hard.
I read somewhere Tyler that if you hold Shift before firing, you can bypass the Folly Shield's without losing them.
Losing them doesn't actually mean anything though. It's just to let you know you're doing something risky
@@CalebTerryRED the game won't let you fire at all if you even have a chance of dying on that turn and instead it takes a shield while doing no damage to the enemy pieces. So yes bypassing it would be very useful

The folly shields have exactly one use, and it is to stop you from shooting while in check. Losing them is like exhaling: Sure, you lost some air, but you're going to get it back within the next two seconds
@@poppymon007 using a shield doesn't take a turn though, there's literally no downside. enemy pieces take the same damage with or without the shield, It's literally just saying "are you sure?"

I've heard something about mod support for this game, which got me thinking about a mod concept. Specifically, allowing players to choose pretty much any 10 Black *and* White cards they wish. This would result in the potential to have absurd builds on both sides.
(Perhaps a consequence of choosing any particular card would be that said card would be the only one available for the rest of the game. Or that could be a mode within the mod...)
I would be interested to see that mod happen. I've been trying to do stuff, but I forgot how tedious it is when you have to try booting up the game everytime you want to test it. I don't know much about modding though, so maybe there's an easier way to do what I'm trying to do.

Tyler, I believe this is how the shield/bypass mechanic works:
As you mentioned, there is some element of randomness as to the spread of bullets. Therefore, if there is a non-zero chance of the spread "screwing you over" and causing you to deal non-lethal damage, it won't let you shoot without first destroying your shields. However, if there is a guarantee to kill the enemy (no amount of bad bullet spread can prevent the piece from dying), it will instantly shoot without forcing you to destroy your shields.
I could be wrong, but this seems to apply consistently to all applicable scenarios.
The folly shields don’t account for different arcs, so if you have a sniper build the folly shields go off even when you’re guaranteed to kill

The shield bypass only works when the enemy is right besides you because the game the game calculates your firepower power vs enemy HP and see if you're safe or not. If you have less FP than enemy HP, they game will trigger the shield.

the opposite is also true, folly shielf wouldn't protect you while the only enemies putting in check is pount blank evenbif you're spreading is so large that you can miss point blank

Yea i noticed that as well and chuckled but more like in "i totally sympathise" kind of way because i know how hard it is to evaluate upgrades in roguelites while still trying to keep the video pace going. It is hard. His first instinct was actually pretty good. In a game where most reliable way to kill something is to shutgun it into its face August Presence can be a big downside..so meh. but for his build it was actually pretty good. Hope that makes sense. Yesterday I got 3 holy gunpowder, high focus, crow's blessing, 2 engraved scope, cornered spot, courteous jousting, and extra barrel. This is the best sniper built I've ever got, ever. I literally just need to right click, fired 3 times and win..
I personally REALLY struggled with hard mode, so good luck with that!
Tyler, take The Red Book for your next run, while it makes Bishops more annoying, there is a secret boss associated with it
the only thing to be aware of is you MUST have no enemy king piece and have the bishops act as kings
it also needs theocracy

I think Tyler forgot that the soul slots only give +1 firepower if they’re empty, and most of the time they were filled. So it encourages and rewards using the souls more often to keep the slots empty.
Nah, he just stopped caring, I think.
He explicitly said that +1 firepower was no longer enough of a difference for him to use his queen souls when he didn't need them.
I've been subbed since btd battles 1, and btd 5 days. I just don't understand how not only you find the coolest strategy games but only have less than 500k subs. Don't worry you should hit a million this year if you stay on track. Love watching your vids man

I think how it worls for when you have an enemy unit right beside you (or in check), I think you have to have more power than they have max HP to be able to take them out and not have them take your shield, as I have noticed that in the past few videos. I may be wrong, but that is my hypothesis on how the shields works

You should check out a game called Nomad Survival. It's in the same sub-genre of Vampire Survivors, and it does a lot different to where it feels like a different experience.

oh yeah since peggle like rougelike is (apparently) a crazy currently so I want to recommend Roundguard as a game to check out, it's a peggle like rougelike that I'd say is very good, even surpassing Peglin in my books.
At 3:34 if I was controlling white you would be in checkmate
correct me if im wrong but i dont think having knockback would acualy be to bad because there is no way to nock somone into a space that puts you in check without you already being in check as all you ar pushing them away from you not towards you meaning its impsible to push enemys to check you if you are not in check already but im probably missing something

@@dr.blockcraft6633 but you would have to be directly in line of sight to the knight for the knockback to work not in any place where the knight could check you unless knockback can be aplied diagonaly but even then its imposible to get into a check with said knockback as knights ony take in L shapes

Tyler you cant shoot someone far away in check, only up close like you said but the reason is because in chess the king could kill that queen! remember the moves you cant make to kill as the king you can as the shotgun.😁

Honestly, as much as I love the shields. They suck. There will be moments where I kill a piece and a secondary piece that was behind it kills me.
