I live in The People's Republik of Massachusetts. This is one of the few high-quality semi-automatic rifles that we can buy. It only has a 10-round magazine (that's okay as The PRM only permits a maximum mag size of 10-rounds). It's heavy (great, it's really a target gun and its got a bull barrel for heat dissipation & accuracy). It doesn't have a threaded barrel (which is fine, as silencers/suppressors are illegal in The PRM). Additionally, it doesn't have a flash-hider or any other compensator/muzzle-device (which would need to be pinned/welded in The PRM). Also, it doesn't have a pistol grip stock (which is an "evil" feature in The PRM and the thumb-hole stock helps to make it legal here). So, what we've got is a high-end, semi-auto, precision rifle with an extremely reliable short-stroke piston action. It's not meant to compete with a 6 lb. AR15. (The proprietary magazines are VERY expensive, though!) 😱

I may be one of the weird ones, but I like the sl8 for what it is. It is not a G36, but it is pretty cool anyway on its own. A stock block conversion is the easier way to go to run a g36 stock and grip if you want to go that route.

I've had my SL8 for a few months now, and I really like it, but I will say it's a huge, heavy rifle (it's no AR-15 for sure). I like the sci-fi design (same thing I like about my Beretta CX4), and I've never really been a fan of the standard AR-15 design. The whole magazine issue doesn't bother me too much, and I've gotten used to loading them (which takes an effort, as opposed to popping rounds easily into a double-stack mag). I also wish it had a bolt release button or lever, instead of pulling the charging handle back/releasing. This is a very accurate rifle - even with a basic little optic sitting up on the rail. And while it's pretty heavy to hold on-target without resting on a b-ipod or support, it's still very fun to take to the range. It comes with a very nice HK soft case and a multi-tool.

I've tried it, it works fine - .223 ammo just seems to be cheaper. After 5 months of shooting it, and maybe 200 rounds (without cleaning) it works great, and I've even fabricated a mag loader myself, as well as installing a pic rail on the bottom of the foregrip, in order to add a bi-pod. I wish it just came with that bottom rail, but whatever - it's an inexpensive add-on, and one worth adding, in my opinion.

They were relatively cheap (for an HK) at $1,600, then I instantly had the word "PROPRIETARY" scroll through my mind and thought of better ways to spend that kind of cash. I do have a love that continues with them from watching Billy Zane in Sniper field that beautiful HK of his. I saw one at a gun show for dale in the late 80's or early 90's that was like looking at a Porsche 959 to me at the time. It was the whole package! Then, I remember another rule from HK owners, which is that HK hates civilians, so their service is to ignore civilian customers at all cost. Friend had a pistol that grenaded on him with normal use, and they literally threatened him with lawyers if he made public posts about it being their fault. He promptly posted all his data and headaches about it.

I think they are worth it if you either pay to get it converted to a G36 or XM8, or I think a partial conversion would make a pretty nice DMR.
