I'm relieved. I have never been able to afford a good camera but just ordered the Lumix S5 ii bundled with this lens. It's sort of a mid-life crisis purchase after my 40th birthday! . I have been taking some pretty awesome photos over the years with a pocket sized Nikon Coolpix, so am excited to see what I can do with this combo. It is ironic you nearly walked into poop. When I visited Dubrovnik and first entered that harbor area, I immediately marveled at the clear blue water. At that moment some guy's dog started pooping. When finished he scooped it up with a napkin and tossed it in the water.
A lot of people like this Lens because it is way better than most kit Lenses. I think once you saw a 24-70mm f2.8 L Art Lens you are hooked on that. But this beginner Lens is very good. Also the low end 20mm is so cool. And Bokeh isn't everything. You can make so good pictures at F4.
Judging by the other reviews this gives excellent corner sharpness at F5 to f8. Thus this should be used during daytime to shoot everything. For portraits evening/night shots pick up 50mm prime. With those two lenses you can shoot absolutely everything and two combined will cost less than 24-70 f2.8 on tis own
Great review Pav, your pics look great. Agree about using the compression to get a good background blur. I love this lens for documentary style video. Took this to the Philippines and it was amaising.
I use this on my Leica SL typ 601 and after giving it a chance and not being super judgmental of the lens and it’s cheap price when bought on its own it showed me how good it is. Very versatile, lightweight, and decent sized (not too big). The colors are also pretty good and the 20mm focal length is super nice to have and it’s very sharp at all focal lengths from my experience. Probably won’t sell mine off until I get a Lumix S Pro 16-35mm f/4. But so far it’s been a good lens all around for it’s price.
I absolutely love Dubrovnik. If you go up the hills and walk across to a place called Konoba Dubrava there's so many opportunities for amazing wide landscape shots. Also, definitely a fan of the 20-60mm. I was going to replace it immediately but after using it, it's stuck with me for 2 years now.

F5.6 on the long end sounds high but is actually on par with f2.8 in the m43 world, which I rarely shoot below on my primes, as the DOF become to shallow for anything else than portraits. I've just ordered the original s5 with this kit lens and the 50/1.8 and look forward to receiving it. Haven't had a 50 mm on a FF body since my first camera I bough when 18 - a used Olympus om-10 just like the one I learned photography with at the youth clubs photo school. Will probably end up using the 50 most and the 20-60 for the wide angle shots. Thanks for your great content which helped me choose an upgrade path from my old Olympus em5 which I first though was replaceable by my iPhone but even the last pro models 48 mp raw files still look like crap zoomed just a bit in when compared to my em5 16 mp with quality glass..
it’s a great lens with a beautiful image. very surprised with the performance on my S5. the focusing ring is also underrated - I really like the feel vs my other Lumix primes. matching the filter at 67mm (as is the usual foresight on Panasonic’s part ) is super helpful too for sharing filters . I think Sigma put out a 20 f3.5 after this and that seems kind of dead in the water for L mount since this exists
I agree that this is a very good lens for a kit but it is NOT flare resistant and for such a wide angle is very important to know and many reviewers avoid this aspect which is unacceptable. I've had 2 of those lenses and both were not flare resistant and that was the key reason I returned both. I've also used Nikon z6 with 24-50 kit and that was flare resistant but focal length wasn't as good as here.
flare resistant? This lens, unfortunately, isn't unusual but in my opinion it is above a lot of lenses that cost twice as much. The flaring you are talking about is it very common, especially with wide angle lenses and right now (aparat from Viltrox 16mm f1.8) I can't think of one lens that doesn't have that kind of flaring visible . Those are very rare.
Just to add the 20-60 focuses incredibly close, about 1/2 macro at 26mm. Handy for close ups of jewellery, scale models and other small subjects. One downside is maximum aperture climbs quickly after 20mm. It's also compact, no bigger than many primes.

I had this lens, but i sold it and replaced it with the 24-105mm, and found out that i missed this lens. Hopefully tomorrow my new S5iiX will arrive, again with this kit lens, and this time i will keep it. (and my beloved S5 will turn into a B-cam). I will be very happy that I have a lighter option sometimes, and the broader view at 20mm. Top notch lens 👍
I’m guessing there are a few out there whom have spent a lot more money, RRP, on lenses which perform worse. This lense has been on my shelf, unused, for quite a while since it was packaged as a kit lens. But i’ve started using it recently, a lot, and it’s good, the glass is up there, just not right up there. Definitely not as bad as some are saying, goes to show! It does have a good user case range though. Would I buy it as a stand alone, no, but as an addition in the kit it’s great value. It came with a 50 1.8 too and is as yet unused, gotta take that one for a test drive now. Hey thanks for making the vid, I know i’m late to this one but goes to show, we’re all at different points in our photography excursion. 👏
I did actually get this lens on its own. But for around £200. Which still feels like a great deal. I already had the S5 but got it body only and needed a travel/landscape lens.

Great review of this kit lens` capability. I`m really thinking about getting the Lumix system even with this lens just for the the videos and vlogging.
It’s not a “Professional” lens, but is the lens I grab first for family/travel vlogs. Would love to see a constant f2.8 alternative, sacrificing a bit in the long end, a 20-45mm maybe. 🙏🏼
@@PavSZ It has great image quality, but I took it to a couple of event shoots, the variable aperture is not the biggest issue, it was more that at 5.6 is hard to use when lighting is not ideal. The second issue I found that the Zoom ring is too tight, can’t really zoom smoothly in video. I have the Sigma 16-28mm and that zoom is buttery smooth 😮💨
@@9adriano21 it's just a different tool for a different job. Yes, small aperture makes it harder to shoot with it in lower light but doable. Zoom on this lens was not meant to be used in video. Changeable aperture will make your video go darker when you zoom in with it while filming anyway (unlike Sigma which is constant f2.8)
It’s a do it all lens, minus the larger apertures. Would love a 2.8 version 20-60mm, manual to keep the size down. But being a bit creative, this can be pro and cinematic, had mine for years, later got the 50mm 1.8, and besides from Bokeh, the 20-60 is a far better lens, basically no CA which the 50 unfortunately has a ton of wide open.
Just got a used S5 with the 20-60 lens. Moved from Fujifilm and glad I have. Just out of interest, I love your colours and tones. Do you use a preset or have you changed the settings on the camera? Great video btw

@@tobyr8555 there is a difference in almost depth to images. It resolves more detail. I loved using Fujifilm system and some of the lenses are fabulous. Definitely glad I moved to Panasonic full frame though.
I mostly create outdoor content related to trekking hiking and road trips. I have the 20-60 mm lens but the only draw back i feel this lens is obviously the lack of bokeh. Now i am thinking of two options here , either i can sell the 20-60mm lens and get a 24-105 all purpose lens which i think is convenient because i would have only a single lens for my content creation which by the way feels convenient on the go. The other option i have is to keep the 20-60mm lens and buy an additional 85mm lens for the bokeh shots. What do you think i should do in this situation ?
The bokeh is not everything. I often take just one les with me when travelling or just going out and make it work. Sometimes I choose the opposite of what I think would be "right" for given situation. You adapt and in the end get better results overall. Only you can choose what is the right option for you. 24-105 will give you bokeh because of the zoom compression but totally different than a wide aperture prime would. 20-60 is more than enough of zoom in most of situations as well. Get 18mm or 35 and shoot everything with it. trust me, you'll become a better photographer than using "all singing and dancing" zoom. Anyway, that's my personal opinion. only you can decide.

Jak się zarejestruje kupiony zestaw to jest £400 cashback, wiec caly zestaw wyszedł mi około £1800. Na obecna chwile używam Fuji XT4, XT2 i Canon 6D Mark I. Zostawię Sobie Fuji XT4 a XT2 i 6D pójdą na sprzedaż. Będzie można szybciej spłacić S5 II... ponieważ wziąłem go na 0% raty ;) Mam kilka obiektywów Pentax manualnych które w końcu będę mógł użyć bez crop factor jak na Fuji. Mam nadzieje że będę zadowolony z S5 II...

Tylko 10 lut plikow na jednej kacie. Spowolnie obrazu na lcd przy malej ilosci swiatla. Ale jak na FF aparat ponizej 2000 funtow jestem wniebowziety :)
Panasonic made the "revolution" when it presented a 20-60 zoom lens. The "tyranny" of the 24-70, is it over??... Sony imitated it and introduced its own 20-70 lens with F4!! AND THIS IS EXACTLY THE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE : If this panasonic lens had a fixed F4, it would be worth much more. This is also the challenge for Panasonic...

Only you can decide based on what you are going to use the camera for. I'd personally go with kit and 50 but 85mm is more expensive lens so you get better deal overall as a kit
I just bought a refurbished Lumix s5 body - so I don’t have the option to get the kit lens. I’m interested in getting a couple lenses to start. Torn between a 50mm & 85mm for portraits but then also want a lens that’s good for landscapes and more day to day or travel photos. Was going to buy the 20-60mm but what would be the better option? I don’t want to break the bank but also want longevity.
You can buy 20-60 lenses second hand really cheap. There is a lot of them around. There are also Sigmas like 28-70 or 24-70 but they are more expensive.
1/8000 is a shutter speed, not ISO. You need to change ISO down to get less digital noise in your images. If you are shooting in AUTO, ISO might not be changeable
$2000 camera + $700 lens... can vlog on it?!? Why do these camera reviewers obsess over vlogging so much? I have an old Sony phone from 2020 that can vlog just as good and probable more conveniently.
I have asked other reviewers and they all say that's because a lot of people like to film themselves. If your Sony camera from 2020 does the job well you don't need $2000 Lumix with $700 lens

I had this lens, but i sold it and replaced it with the 24-105mm, and found out that i missed this lens.
Hopefully tomorrow my new S5iiX will arrive, again with this kit lens, and this time i will keep it. (and my beloved S5 will turn into a B-cam).
I will be very happy that I have a lighter option sometimes, and the broader view at 20mm.

AND THIS IS EXACTLY THE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE : If this panasonic lens had a fixed F4, it would be worth much more.

The difference is that Sony's zoom is 1099$, while the 20-60 is yours almost for free when bought in bundle with the S5 and the 50 1.8

I'd personally go with kit and 50 but 85mm is more expensive lens so you get better deal overall as a kit
I just bought a refurbished Lumix s5 body - so I don’t have the option to get the kit lens. I’m interested in getting a couple lenses to start. Torn between a 50mm & 85mm for portraits but then also want a lens that’s good for landscapes and more day to day or travel photos. Was going to buy the 20-60mm but what would be the better option? I don’t want to break the bank but also want longevity.
You can buy 20-60 lenses second hand really cheap. There is a lot of them around.
There are also Sigmas like 28-70 or 24-70 but they are more expensive.
How you put iso so far.. I have the 24-105 f4 and in f4 in 8.000 i have noise
1/8000 is a shutter speed, not ISO. You need to change ISO down to get less digital noise in your images. If you are shooting in AUTO, ISO might not be changeable

$2000 camera + $700 lens... can vlog on it?!? Why do these camera reviewers obsess over vlogging so much? I have an old Sony phone from 2020 that can vlog just as good and probable more conveniently.
I have asked other reviewers and they all say that's because a lot of people like to film themselves.
If your Sony camera from 2020 does the job well you don't need $2000 Lumix with $700 lens
