Beautiful. I've hand-fed a hedgehog chips once. A neighbour facilitated a sort of open house (garage actually) shelter for feline waifs and strays and they were in the habit of running over to me when I staggered home in the early hours. The cats, not the neighbours.
At one point, the cats took an orphaned or lost hoglet under their, err, wing and it would bask in the moonlight on the road with them. The cats came running over and the hog looked up and scampered along behind. It let me tickle it under the chin and stood on its hind legs to grab the french fries I offered.
Unfortunately, and predictably, the poor little mite had nowhere near the cats' road traffic avoidance reflexes.

@@PawsAndWhiskersTV - I remember as a kid, something rather magical about seeing a hedgehog on dark autumn evenings. They're not exactly elusive but they will curl into a ball if you try petting them. That one took to me as a friend purely on the basis of my friendship with its feline fostering family. Its end was inevitable having lost the sense to hide in undergrowth but at least it was evidently mercifully quick.
Lose your senses in the wild and you'll soon get found out, I can't feel bitterness about that. (I do appreciate the sweetness of that brief interaction, though. Fleeting, as you say.) Gulls are possibly as savvy as humans in urban environments but I've seen one haplessly walk under the wheel of a bus at a bus stop and go the same way as our hedgehog friend. Let's be honest, that individual was holding back the chances of gull evolution.
I've recently 'befriended' a colony of crows on my morning commute. I don't kid myself that they're not merely taking advantage of my generosity but there is one which bounds along the path beside me, which is heartwarming.
