Here women control on the street the sale of khat, a plant with stimulant powers that sets the pace of Harar. Consumption, ritualized in everyday life of the city, provides its inhabitants a unique identity.

WOW so much hatred in the comments .... this filmaker made it from his perspective & i know Rimbauds story he did not die from Syphilis he died from cancer ... Rimbaud stopped writing poetry at 20 but he never stopped writing letters & journals & had a couple articles in the French National Geographic Magazine ... If he is not accurate about Rimbaud it puts the rest in question....i am of mixed race & a World Citizen ... the documentary was fascinating in parts How about somebody else who knows the history of this area can step up & make a better Documentary ... Burton stayed in Harar for 10 days, not 10 years, as the guest/prisoner of the Amir in 1855. Otherwise this was an entertaining peek into this historic city. Interesting that women have so much power there.
