The biggest change is the playoffs happened. Colorado is built and coached to win playoff games. If they give up a few they maybe shouldn't have in the regular season so be it. They watch what their opposition does, then take what worked against them in the regular season and crank it up to 11. They had to go through some absolute heart breakers along the way, but all that experience over the years adds up. I think Winnipeg went into this kinda thinking they had the Avs number, and why wouldn't they? They stomped all over them this season. Then the switch got flipped....

Colorado has spent many years getting to this point. They are run by people who know how to build a playoff team, and the changes they made going into the trade deadline show that. They cut their losses and selected new pieces that would fit their game better. Their depth is as good as their cup winning team if not better.
They also have so much experience in the mental side of the game. It's taken years to become this resilient and ride out the emotions of the playoff rollercoaster.
They also have superstars who come alive in the playoffs. The Jets have done well at shutting down Nate and Mikko, however they are still setting up plays and getting great opportunities. Superficially you can look at the season and think the Jets have an even chance of winning because they performed well in the regular season, but there is so much more to it. If Georgiev hadn't had such a bad game in game 1 this would have been a sweep. The Avs are hungrier and more experienced and this will take them far.

What changed after winning game 1? Georgiev started to stop the pucks!

Was rooting for the Jets to win, but I knew their chances were slim.. MacKinnon is just on another level this year, and that end to end goal by Makar was pure dominance

Scary thing for everyone else is Mackinnon has been relatively quiet and moose has been a ghost of himself! (he still got a ppg tho)

The jets were absolutely not a deeper team than the Avs. The strengths of the Jets appeared to match up well with the Avs on paper. While the weakness of the two teams looked tilted to the jets favor on paper as well. In practice the Avs have shown that to be nothing more than a paper advantage. The avs have forced the jets to play the way the avs want to play, and that was never going to be a winning formula for winnepeg

As an Avs fan who underestimated my own team going into this series and after watching all the games this season, here’s my take. They’re such an experienced team that they play the majority of the season at 70-80% with the focus being on staying healthy and staying comfortably inside the playoff bubble. Obviously would prefer home ice throughout but also not a concern if they finish lower. Seems they made a point not to show their potential playoff opponents their real game making it difficult to prepare for. I don’t think they intended to lose 7-0 in that last game vs the Jets but I do think they very much made a point not to show them anything because they already knew that was their matchup in round one. Bednar even said prior to the series that the Jets hadn’t seen the real Avs yet when asked if he was concerned playing a team that beat them in every matchup during the season. And now the Jets look like a deer in headlights and have no answers for what the Avs are throwing at them. The Jets have a very good team but teams that ascend to the cup typically have to take their lumps in the playoffs first and learn from it.

I disagree with only 1 of your points. I believe they purposely threw that 7-0 game. the matchup was already set in stone so I think Colorado wanted to see what the Jets thrive on. Not only that but you give the jets a false sense of confidence. And since Colorado only plays at 75% through the regular season, that extra 25% is an extra gear that teams don't have... especially the Jets who are much slower.

@@tobinkern5389 IMO, Avs didn’t purposely throw it. They just played vanilla and if that ended up being good enough to get the win and home ice, great. If not, whatever. Seems you and I basically see it the same with the exception of the “purposely” throwing it part.

I am sorry but I never thought from day 1 that the Jets had more depth than Colorado. I feel like people said the Jets had depth because all of their lines were very well balanced... which they are! But Colorado has depth in a different way. There is not 1 Jets forward that would be on Colorado's top line. Colorado's top line is so much better than anything the jets have its not even funny. Thats depth that overcomes any discrepancy in balance.
