  • In this video, I clearly show you Exactly how a septic tank works and how to build a septic system.
    I've summarised an easy method on how to build a septic tank and soakaway.
    What is a septic system and how does a septic system work?
    A septic system is part of a plumbing system that takes waste or sewage from your house and purifies it back into the ground water system. And in this video, you will watch a septic system explained.(full septic installation). Septic system cost included.
    I will first show you safe distances of the Septic tank and soak pit from large trees, buildings, wells, property boudaries among others. The video also includes dimensions of different septic tanks depending on the number of users. Different number users will have different septic tank sizes. The video explains all that
    You will also learn the septic system design, septic tank installation diagram, septic tank and leach field installation(septic and drain field installation), the procedures remain the same as for Concrete septic tank installation.
    Next you will learn how to do septic system treatment, septic tank cleaning and septic system maintenance after doing septic system inspection ie septic tank pumping
    In the end You will know everything you need to know about septic tank Construction, soakpit Construction, Septic tank installation and how a septic tank works.

      @@ianconstruction can you have your septic tank as a stand alone and not connected to NWSC line? If so, on average, how long can it take for it to need emptying?

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@otaidavid3383 Ofcourse you need water sir, to flash or take away the the sewage to the septic tank . If you are not considering the option of connecting to the National Water and Sewage Cooperation (NWSC) which charges alot, I recommend using a solar powered water pump which pumps water from underground to the reservoir tanks on the steel stand tank tower, the water will then flow from the tanks to flash water from toilets to the septic tank. You incur costs once while installing and not the monthly water bills
      Also remember that when making plumbings for your residential house, the connection from kitchens and bathrooms, will have gully traps at the veranda and will go directly to the septic tank
      Then the connection from the toilets will also go to septic as a separate connection via a series of manholes
      Making such 2 separate connections will make your plumbing connection free from any chances of the system from clogging.
      The sewage collection truck will will take 5+ years to collect the sewage to the sewage treatment plant
      It entirely depends depends on the usage also, I have a house where we did repair recently in July, the owner told us he has been using the same 12ft deep septic tank since 1991 (around 15 users) when he built the house and it has never filled and never even hired for the sewage collection truck not even once. The sewage goes to the first chamber, eaten up by bacteria to become liquid sewage, the liquid sewage goes to the second chamber then from the second chamber liquid sewage goes to the soakpit pit and the process continues
      First time before using the septic tank always also make sure to fill the two chambers of the septic tank with water such that the first time sewage will find water in the pit
      Taking away the solid sewage therefore will entirely depend on the proper usage ( just keep the septic tank free from baby wipes, Pampers or diapers, female pads or other hard materials that are not biodegradable
      I hope that answers your question bro

    • @ianconstruction

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před rokem +2

      Distance between the second chamber of the septic tank to the soakpit should be atleast 3 metres
      The cover that we put on the soakpit depends on the design you are using
      Option one is using a Concrete cover reinforced with BRC, then option 2 is Covering the soakpit pit with a polyethylene then spread marrum on top of the polyethylene sheeting( or any other dpm). The marrum is to stablise the top earth surface

    I noticed Many African builders put their toilets outside of their house but with a septic tank system you can have your toilet 🚽 in your house and still able to flush your waist into the tank with no smell no problems. My family used this system for Many years as I was growing up

    • @edmondm22
      @edmondm22 Před 4 měsíci +2

      Many standard homes have both..the flush toilets in the house and the latrine outside the house. The latrine does not need water and is a good alternative for water emergency situations. I also see some with some flush toilets outside just for case of meeting/ parties hosted in the compound. For the case of public facilities, say like schools, with 500 users and above.. I understand the need to minimise water usage/ wastage. Also for homes on low budgets, there would be an intention to minimize water bills. It's about choices and provision.

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah you're right; For water bill worries, I believe that underground water pumped by solar to the storage tanks works very well

    • @edmondm22
      @edmondm22 Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@ianconstruction I suppose with underground water, you mean the natural water sources just as those of the water wells. Still, such water points cannot be found everywhere and anywhere, where there are homesteads which is the reason we find water well points to serve a number of homesteads. Secondly, it would still be a very costly venture for these individual homesteads to do underground excavation up to possible water points and then put installation works to deliver the water to the house. Connection to a national water grid would be a better option but the water comes at a cost. Rain water harvesting would not be a bad option to save some water. It would be good to note that the latrine system is still used as a 2nd alternative in many standard homes.

    I like this septic tank because it has a soak away. That means it eliminates the problem of being filled by water. Is there a solution for the biodegradable material that fills up the tank other than calling the sewage tank to come and drain it please?

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před rokem +3

      The alternative solution for non biodegradable material is using organic chemicals like DX4 among others though these chemicals are of more harm than good. They are strong to the extent of even breaking the walls of the septic tank, they too kill the bacteria responsible for the natural breakdown of solid sewage into liquid sewage.
      In summary, the truck is better. It takes about 6-10+ years to reach the need for the truck

My question is if the bottom area is rocky it is still necessary to lay a slap foundation and the last question is due to limited space can l make three into one compartments where the last one will be for rocks only or the rock pit has to be separated?

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před rokem +3

      The septic tank system would become a mess in case you don't make the 3 compartments or without mass Concrete below, simply do as it is in the video to avoid future problems.
      The single compartment can still be divided. My urge is to simply do as it is supposed to be to avoid future expenditure into repairs or any future leakages

    Explain the tees inside the septic tank and the length of pipe on the tee outlet to the soak pit

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před rokem

      A tee is a PVC device that directs wastewater in and out of the septic tank. The inlet T directs wastewater and scum into the septic tank whereas the outlet T directs only wastewater out of the septic tank leaving the scum behind. We use tees and not any other because we don't want the scum to be tampered with. Scum will remain, whereas wastewater will flow to the soakpit easily. If you use normal pipes with no tees fixed there after some few months, the scum will inevitably clog the soakpit and everything will become a mess so be sure to always fix the tees on the pipes as I demonstrated it on drawing in the video.
      The pipe can be 2m from the septic tank to the soakpit. ( It can be less than that or more, it entirely depends on your favourite position)
      The soakpit should not be near any water source

    Amazing, but you did not give details of the soak away pit, how it's connected to the main septic tank and the pipping etc, please help

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před 11 měsíci

      The pipe that takes liquid sewage from the septic tank to the soakpit should be atleast 3 metres
      The videos also explains different sizes of the soakaway for different users
      I hope it helps, incase of any inquiry reply back

    Does the soak away pit not need building also. Because you only talked about the septic tank

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před 11 měsíci

      For the case of the soakpit, you can just escavate a pit, put hardcore in the pit, cover with a polyethylene sheeting or any other damp proof membrane (dpm) to prevent storm water or rainwater from directly going into the soakpit and then lastly cover with marrum on top of the dpm

    Will I need to set up concrete bqsket on the floor level to raise a pillar before raising my block work on the soakapit

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před 4 měsíci

      Yeah exactly you have to cast a concrete blinding every where for the first chamber and the second chamber of the septic tank. Do not cast any concrete down below for the soak pit to allow easy soaking away of the liquid sewage

    Idug my septic tank ,hard core wz not put and the water hz come up what can ido?
    And kaplot is small

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před 11 měsíci

      That was a mistake, the only thing you can do now is to hire a sewage collection truck to take the sewage to a sewage treatment plant and then do provision for a soakpit and also 2 chambers for the septic tank . If the plot is very small. You can dig a small soakpit but very deep around 10ft to 12 ft and fill it with hardcore

    I have dug a 4m pit. What do you suggest I should need to complete the septic tank?

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před 11 měsíci

      (Thats height, Length and widith ?) Main requirements that you need are bricks or blocks ,sand, cement, steel bars, timber pieces to do formwork for the top slab, double TEE's, hardcore, polythene sheeting to cover on top of the soakpit, Aggregates to cast concrete for top slab and mass Concrete at the bottom
      Also excavate another pit for the soakaway pit around 3 metres away from the main septic tank
      Plus a pvc pipe(10mm) connecting the septic tank to the soakpit

    i still have one worry here, i have limited space, i dug this septic tank a year back, so ive constructed the septic walls, so does it mean i have to break the wall to make a hole for plumbing the soak pit, and two i can only have 1 meter from septic tank to dig the soak pit. is it possible

    • @ianconstruction
      @ianconstruction  Před rokem +2

      You have to drill a hole in your already built wall then fix a 3inch PVC outlet pipe in that hole, at a lower level than the inlet pipe then the pipe will take the liquid sewage to the soakpit, that way, you will have a complete septic tank
      1 metre is okay. If you have very limited space use the 1 metre( Dig a deeper soakpit about 10 to 12 ft)
      Did i answer your question sir?
