So, I made the first wing.... but I can't figure out how to make the opposite side wing. Would someone please show me how to do that??

I noticed she turned after chaining the 4 chains then she baisically started from there to build up to the last long row of the wing. So yes its being crocheted from short side first. In the other video she started from the long side without turning.

Did you notice that at the end of a row she chains 4 then dc into the fourth ch before crocheting into the row? Thats the increase for that row.
