    I am happy to stumble upon this. I am a stroke survivor who has a duck foot walk. I just started a new job that is a lot of walking for me. my walking causes a lot of foot pain, and I have been trying to figure out how to fix it.

    Glad I found these videos, I’ve just been diagnosed with early onset osteoarthritis (at 42), I have not done any activity which would merit the amount of damage I have, but I have always known I have a ‘bad walk’ and that i am very ‘heavy footed’. I’m not sure any of these adequately describe my walking pattern. I think my problem is that I slap my feet down. Perhaps something like the overstride, but a shorter version without adequately rolling the feet and moving the hips. I’ve just started on your videos so I’m only just starting to understand the correct way of walking (and understanding what exactly I am doing wrong), so that I can limit any further OA degeneration of my knees… thank you for your videos!!

    Todd, may I address you on a first name basis? It’s an absolute privilege to find your content, I am learning so much, and your insight is invaluable. Growing up I was very active playing basketball and football recreationally. Now in my forties with some added lbs, I have experienced forefoot pain for years, and sometimes it feels like I “forgot how to walk”. I know that might sound odd, but it’s true. For whatever reason, throughout the years bad habits developed that made walking a chore, not the effortless movement that it should be. You have helped me so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
    In a future video could you do an experiment trying shoes with different stack heights (mm cushioning) and different heel to toe drops? I would love to hear you expert opinion on what you actually feel when walking with the different types of cushioning, and if you believe one “type” of shoe promotes a more natural movement? And generally what your thoughts are on min, mod, & max cushioning shoes pros and cons on natural gait movement?

      Hi Frank. First name perfectly fine. Thanks for sharing your story. The feeling of forgetting how to walk is something many people have shared with me. It isn't odd at all. Part of that is because most people don't really "know" how to walk. They just repeat a pattern they are used to, and when something is off there is no way to fix it because there was never any knowledge underneath it. That is why I promote moving with consciousness, with real knowledge of what creates movement and its variations. I like you suggestion for a future video. I have thought about doing that but haven't really wanted to go out and buy a bunch of new shoes for the video. I can tell you for sure that a higher heel makes a huge difference in the gait pattern. I have some tango shoes with a 2 inch heel and you absolutely cannot walk the normal way with them. It requires a completely different gait. I have a feeling that the higher rise in a normal shoe also increases the stride length compared to walking barefoot on in real minimalist shoes. I believe the flatter the better, but a video on the subject would be good.

      @@ToddMartinMD Thank you for taking the time to reply. I would absolutely agree that people either “forget” through bad habits or never “know” how to walk properly. And it sounds so weird to say that, but you are right, people tend to go with what gets them to point a-b, not realizing that there is an innate biomechanical, efficient, effortless, natural way to movement. I am learning more everyday from you, keep up the great work! And if I’m ever in Cali I’m coming for an office visit!

    Please make a detailed video to fix anterior pelvic tilt.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Před 2 lety

      I have addressed it in many videos. Here are my thoughts directly on it.czcams.com/video/ET2UJGzdOfQ/video.html. Fixing it requires fixing the walk which I detail in most of my videos. However I don't think the fix is quick because if it has been going on a long time, the connective tissues and structures will need to slowly adapt to a new position and this takes time. The bottom line is that using the correct core movement with walking will eventually realign the spine and pelvis in the correct position. If you don't fix that, there is no amount of stretching that is going to fix it.

    Hi Todd, when I’m walking my right foot is predominately leading in front is this incorrect?

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Před 2 lety

      I think you are saying that you are powering your swing through with the swing leg instead of generating the energy from the standing leg. If that is what you are talking about, it is not the correct way to move. It is one of the main causes of the duck foot position. Watch this video to see if this is the issue. czcams.com/video/4SjryYXaevg/video.html

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Před 2 lety

      You may be alternating using your standing leg on one side and using your swing leg on the other. I would recommend practicing this exercise, focusing on your core movement on both sides to make sure you are moving symmetrically. czcams.com/video/ZoLwvQOK5CA/video.html

    Dr Todd you go into such detail it becomes boring. It's like a grade school class for the illiterate.
    I'm 70++ and walk 7 to 9 hours a week to include hills and stairs.
    My next adventure will be Nordic walking not tango.

    • @ToddMartinMD
      @ToddMartinMD  Před 2 lety +3

      I guess many people would call school boring, but it is necessary for people who really want to learn something at a level that will make a difference. If you don't need that, more power to you. Many people need it and are benefitting from it.
