  • Some old 8mm film I took in 1973 of the long-gone car ferry over Loch Leven in Scotland. In the background you can see the work which had just started on building the bridge which now carries the A82. Although only a short distance by ferry, the road trip via Kinlochleven could take a good couple of hours on a bad day as the road followed the edge of the loch.

So, so good to see this! Used to holiday at Benderloch in a caravan, long before the Club site opened, paying a crofter called McColl. A trip north always involved this magical wee ferry!

Glen Loy registered at Fraserburgh because that was where she was built. Glenachulish currently on service at Glenelg/Kylerhea is also registered at Fraserburgh but was built elsewhere.

Brings back memories, was on the ferry 1964,then drove round to catch the Corran ferry, then travelled down to a wee place called Lochaline looking directly over to the Isle of Mull, where we worked in the Silica sand mine.At that time, the only one in Britain! great film!

My granddad use to work on the ferry before the bridge was built and once the bridge was built he became the gardner at the Ballachuilish hotel. We use to live in a small bungalow behind the hotel next to the McDonalds farm house. Very fond memories x

Bobby Boyd I remember the McDonalds! We used to live in 1 Glengorm, the white semi-detached bungalow as you came up the bray from the slip. Small world!

Gosh, this is amazing. Gorgeous George was our neighbour and I remember Bobby too! Lived here for 4 years in the 70s. My father was on the last crossing - it peed down with rain and there was Commander Clark and a bagpiper! Beautiful place.

Can you remember Mima and Jon-Paul?

Not sure. I do remember a family moved into the house down from the McDonald's - they had some connection to Canada. I used to play with a girl who either lived or visited there. Such a long time ago!

That old ferry washed up on our shore at Ulva Ferry on the Isle of Mull late 70's/early 80's & we had so much fun as kids paddling about on it's life rafts : )

Excellent, thank you for this. We used to swim at the pier between ferry boat landings. Skipper: George Macfarlane, and crew member Bobby MacLean.

I returned there this summer for the first time since 1976. The old road to the ferry and landing stage on the north bank is still there but now it's a very quiet place.

I remember the ferry very well. I crossed it with my family late 1960,s. I think that on the last day of its journey, I can,t remember the date, the Ferrymaster was arrested for being drunk. KEN.
