  • Mamoru Oshii's Angel's Egg is a tragically beautiful anime, and might very well be the best anime to never get an American release.
    The sad part, though? We almost got one, but a terrible movie might have dashed any hopes.

      Funny enough, David Lynch was going to direct a live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's Domu: A Child's Dream that was canceled in the 90s.
      That would've been cool if it had happened.
      Even Guillermo Del Toro tried after Blade 2 did well at the box office but couldn't make it due to having trouble getting the live-action rights.

    I have to confess - I caught "In The Aftermath" late one night and was captivated by the anime sections - I looked at the end titles and made it my mission to track down Angel's Egg, which I finally did in 1997, on a Japanese DVD, direct from Japan. I had to get a region-free DVD player to watch it, but that was how deep into the movie I had gotten, and it was worth every second of research, every minute of waiting for the DVD to arrive, and every penny spent on the disc and player. A true masterpiece in every way, one I return to again and again, and possibly my favorite anime of all time (and I was around for the "golden age" of the late 80s and early 90s!)

    I have heard of In The Aftermath, but this is the first time I've heard of it having gotten a remastered release as recent as 2019 and yet Angel's Egg didn't. What a slap to the face that is, and an even more painful one if it turns out that film did cause enough of a legal kerfuffle to withhold Angel's Egg from a proper international release for decades. This kind of shit is why piracy still remains a necessity when it comes to preserving media as intended.
    Also, I just felt like adding something about Oshii's rejected Lupin III film: Oshii planned for that film to be Lupin's "final chapter", as in it would put an end to the character by having him literally steal himself away from the meta. Toho rejected his pitch because they just wanted another light-hearted heist movie in a similar vein to Castle of Cagliostro and not something this high-concept. Oshii would actually go on to write a few episodes of Lupin III Part 6, one of which (Episode 10 "Darwin's Bird") pays homage to the Lupin film he never got to make.

Generally political systems in high fantasy tend to have a strongly feudal bent, if allowing space for some aesthetic nods to later court mechanics. The general differences between japanese high fantasy story telling and european are largely no more impressive or thoughtful than european stories with a setting modelled after or informed by literally anywhere else than europe, vs actual stories from those places. It's just reflective of a general disinterest in other cultures as they actually exist, rather than as exotified objects. Same same, if you ask me.

It is obvious reference to symbol of Eye of Providence, but it may be also something related to Japanese hidden Christian sects (I did see reference in various sources). What are commonly depicted in malicious way, as Christianity was banned in Japan for long time and Christians were treated with suspicion. I heard about how this film was inspired by Andrei Tartakovsky's art films. Truthfully I must admit that I've never seen or heard of any of them myself. I know I've seen Angel's Egg before, but oddly I can't remember much about it. Seeing the clip of that giant eyeball-like thing at 8:40 of this video reminds me of the Ameno-Sagiri boss fight from Persona 4 & Persona 4: Golden though! It leads me to wonder if a member of the design team saw Angel's Egg or if it's just a HUGE coincidence! The mixing of live-action with anime footage reminds me of another anime title I've seen recently on Tubi TV. It's a film that was a Russian co-production called "First Squad: The Moment of Truth." The version shown on Tubi TV has live-action parts, but weirdly enough these live-action parts SEEM like the filmmakers are framing it as a documentary about the Russian military in WWII! The problem with that is that the events of the animated parts of this anime film are so BATSH*T INSANE that there's absolutely NO WAY any of it could be true! If you haven't seen it, then you REALLY should because you'll see what I mean!

    Sad that unnecessary live action adaptations of anime are going to continue for the foreseeable future. Just found out about the existence of a live action adaptation of Your Name that's in the works. At this point I'm waiting for the announcement of something like a live action adaptation or Mewtwo Strikes Back style fully CGI remake of Yugioh The Movie: The Pyramid Of Light.

    I knew you will say the right words.
    And those were: "This would never ever be done today."

    WHen I saw Angels egg years ago, for all I know it was on an independent cable access channel in the late 1990s...I liked it. I may have seen it once or twice more since, but I should really revisit it as the dark starkness of it was artisically pleasing to me on a weirdly innate level. Weird = good sometimes, ya know? :P Be well!

    I'm sorry, but I just found the "it's so dull, it has a three minute filler piano montage" kind of hilarious after earlier in the video you showed us a shot of the girl tossing in her sleep with a note saying it lasted 2.5 min. I haven't seen either so I have no context, and I'm positive that the sleeping girl had more artistry behind it than the piano scene, but I couldn't help but think I'd probably still rather sit through the piano scene as at least it has music, lol. But such movies really aren't my thing, so take my opinion with a pretty big grain of salt. I enjoy learning about such movies/OVAs/series through this channel, though, so thanks for all the hard work and research that goes into these!

  • @channelwithout
    @channelwithout Před rokem +2

    Aw no... when I read about what they did to Angel's Egg, I thought it would just cut between the original footage and the "new" footage, not green screen. I know it's kinda bad of me to say, but there are some older "edited" adaptations I enjoy- Star Blazers, Robotech, etc... In The Aftermath, however, does not look like one of them.

    • @jasonblalock4429
      @jasonblalock4429 Před rokem +1

      Meh, enjoy what you enjoy. I'm sure there are plenty of 80s kids who have a soft spot for Robotech, even if the actual Macross is better.
      Starlight, flashing, the feeling's smashing . . .

    • @channelwithout
      @channelwithout Před rokem +2

      @@jasonblalock4429 while I agree Macross fares better in its original form, I kinda prefer Southern Cross and Mospeada in their Robotech versions, as the ending to the former feels more conclusive and the latter feels less generically derivative. I know some curse Carl Macek's name to this day, but say what you will about his writing practices, it's important to remember that the decades-long licensing fiasco was the doing of Harmony Gold itself, not Macek.
