Stay in the Woods,
Dan
In windy situations, you could also file those rod shavings onto a strip of duck tape and press in the shavings so they won't fly away in the wind. Plus, the tape will burn as well.
Fyi, I tested the duct tape method and it didn’t really want to light. Sadly it doesn’t really work.
I have been carrying a 4 inch piece of file for years. It doubles as my fero rod striker , as it has a 90 degree spine on 1 side, it has a rounded and slightly de-tempered edge for use as a flint and steal striker, as well as still being able to use the file for tool maintenance...
Dan I think you finally found your groove. Your 5 year old videos are serious, to the point and full of great tools for the toolbox. Then your pendulum swung to the opposite end. Tons of great tools for the toolbox but wacky. Now you have settled in the middle. I love all your videos and I can’t decide which of your personalities I like best so keep them coming and I’ll keep watching. I’m going to ask again. Do you ever go back and watch some of those old videos? They are the BEST! Cheers, Jim
You can tell alot about a man's character by what chainsaw he carries. You go Dan.
What’s an MS660 with 36” bar say? 😂
@@joshuastover1047 You're thinkin' about Marcel Ledbetter's Talkin' Chainsaw!
I thought he was going to take the chain off and use the bar as the scraper, the bar I bet has a sweet burr on the edges and would scrap the crap off that ferro rod, gobs of sparks for sure!
I noticed how loose the chain was
I stopped watching when I saw the chain was that loose
Awesome tip, but... "I know you're thinking Dan's gonna run a chainsaw across the ferro rod, but I'm not." It'd be a lot cooler if you did.
Ive seen people open a beer with a chainsaw
LoL! Imagine my disappointment when he didn't.
I waited till the end expecting him to just do it, since obviously it’s what we all came for. Haha
Instead of grinding down a ferro rod, could you use a cheap magnesium one from the dollar store then strike that with your ferro rod?
Love the file idea. Buy a multi tool with a file and no need to carry the extra file. Thank you. Never thought to use a ferro rid that way.
WOW! What a GREAT idea.
Thank you for sharing.
I am going out right now to try that with the file on my Victorinox SpiritX to see if that will work. If not, it is off to Home Depot I go to get a small dedicated file to carry.
If you take the spark arrestor out of the chainaw. It could be that all you need is the chainsaw.
I like the carbide strikers cause they scrape off gobs of material. Good tip with the file
My daughter loves your bushcraft kid book, thanks for making great content
Dang, I was waiting for you to fire up the chainsaw, hahaha. Another great tip with the file, thanks buddy.
One helluva striker! First minute comment.
I made sure my multitool had a file on it, for other reasons but now see that it us a true multitool!! Thanx Dan!
Happy New Year to you and yours!
Should have demo'ed with the file on your leatherman. Either way awesome video
Great idea! I noticed your multitool; looks like a Leatherman. Mine has a file/rasp that will accomplish the task.
Great tip and the file can sharpen your machete.
Awesome, thank you Dan!!!
I used your filing tip to clean up my ferro rod this weekend. Also lit my first char cloth fire. Im really learning a lot from you. Thanks.
Double cut bastard file is what I have carried for years. So many other uses for a file in the field
A file is rather handy in the pack , sharpen the handle to a fine point, the other end sharpen a chisel end , not only for putting on a quick edge , can do tin can projects, save your knife edge , many other uses too
This.
Why I'm subscribed.
Use a file as mY back up to my back up, to my back up. But works amazing as a striker and I can sharpen my axe-hatchets- knifes. Etc. Been doing this for years! Great stuff Dan, use it like magnesium!
My bibury multi tool has a double sided file (diamond grit sideand a nail file side. ) I’m sure it will work fine for this purpose 😮!!!😅
Your multi-tool file could make the duct and knife supply the ignition sparks. Good Idea and the small file could be handy for other things.
The back of a folding saw blade will throw nasty big gobbs of material off of a ferro rod, and you can leave it closed for safety. In an emergency situation that would be my go to.
Thanks, already did, my flint and steel is a broken piece of flat file with 3 edges ground to a 90. Great scraper and still have a file.
I guessed at where you were going with this. I am happy to be correct for once!
A really good idea especially in winter with a lot of snow in the icy forest like right now here in Finland (now outside -30C = -22F)
From the title, I was expecting a Tim the Tool Man episode! 😊
Hey Dan...thanks for the program...reminded me to refresh my fire-starting supplies. Thanks for the website too. And Happy New Year from Wisconsin!
A great demo !
Another awesome podcast. Love the tech behind the 2A.
And....this combined with the powder of a bullet....wow 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I came here to see that chainsaw throw sparks and walk away looking for one of my small files. Not as exciting but certainly more practical. I like to keep an 80 grit sanding disk with my gear for this. It doubles as a striker for matches in case my lighter doesn’t work. I have not yet “needed” to start a fire with a ferro rod but it’s fun and keeps the skill alive.
Great tip Dan. Passing it on to my scouts.
I said it before and I’ll say it again… I LOVE this channel. Thanks for such fantastic videos.
Canada here: I’m deep in the “Queen’s Bush” and you’re one smart f🤫r. Absolutely genius! And ya, really, the queens bush😮.
I've been tying the end of cheapo hacksaw blades (snap em off, file till rounded) to my ferro rods, works for me
A lot of people like to use old files to make steel strikers for flint and steel so between that, tool maintenance, and now this a file is shaping up to be quite the useful tool.
My buddies and I ALL had zippo lighters in the 60's and 70's. Then we found BIC lighters, last ten years of more I found these mini torches Butane lighters on Amazon!
I do this to remove the chatter marks on the fero rod and i keep a small file for my hatchet, so it worked perfectly! This absolutely works i have used it quite a few times for fires getting the chatter off!
Very awesome tip Dan!!! That's real handy since I do alot of tree work!
Bought a file and a bay lite ferro rod I’m all set loving the upgrade to my fire set
I LIKE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS.
YOU ALWAYS GOT COOL LITTLE TIPS. 👍
Good tip, thank you for the idea.👍
Excellent idea Dan.thanks.😊☮️
SUCH A GREAT TIP!
Thanks for sharing
🙏❤️🌲
Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy your videos.
Great tip!
Good tip. I most often carry a small file for my axe or machete in the field. Got another use for it now.
Very good advice
Awesome tip Dan, that ferro dust took off like a pile of gunpowder
great idea, thank you very much!
Awesome video. Life saver on a budget 🔥
A good chunk of high speed steel used in older lathes works well. It has nice sharp 90 degree edges. You migh want to attache it to a wood or antler handle if you have some problems with finger strength.
Nice tip. Concise video. Thank you.
great tip thanks!
Wow, thanks Dan. Awesome idea
Another tool for the tool belt. Thanks, Dan!
Awesome stuff, I’ll definitely be trying this, also my multitool has a file on it, so I’ll be trying that as well
Evolved to those right after I started trying fire with ferro rods myself.
Using the carbide inserts from pull through sharpeners makes for great ferro rod strikers. Just a tip for other usage as its something that many have on them as well. Personally i dont use pull through sharpeners as they ruin the edge of a blade but as a ferro rod striker works great.
Thats awesome!
Good tip Dan
That was a great tip
Cool, thanks.
The file can be multi use too if you size it to sharpen your cutting tools. Not going to get them as polished as a 5k stone, but good enough in a pinch in the field.
Thanks for the very useful tip 🙂
I have been following you since you started, thanks much for your channel and videos!!!!
😮😊thanks Dan. I have many saws and files. Cool
I learned to carry road flares, not lightweight, but when that wood is wet, you are wet , and you are not an hour or two walk to the car. Besides the butane lighters, petroleum jelly cotton ball jar, a few fatwood sticks, a small bottle of hand cleaner alcohol base, Forest service matches and strikers plural ; Thank you Wranglestar, and two huge industrial garbage bags, pepperoni stick, water bottles; thank you half liter and liter soda bottles. Folks may chuckle, I guess you have never been stuck in the High Catskills in Winter? I cannot believe I forgot what I keep in my pocket at all times, My Ferro Rod and Striker!
That is awesome
Very good video.
Great idea!! A round file would keep it compact and is what most people use.
Great tip. I also have a pretty good file in my multi-tool
That’s a great tip
Will be using that tip…thx.
Makes good sense. 👍
Very cool!
Good stuff. I found this technique useful for a magnesium brick from the store. ✌
You can also use the edge of the file as the steel with a piece of flint to throw sparks.
Just turn the thermostat up that is the safest way, no dangerous blade needed.
Great advice !
Another tool for the tool box. Also can be used for your are. Thank you 😊
Awesomeness
Outstanding, Sir 🫡
Nice vid.
Great idea. Many multi tools have a file also.
You have made many great videos over the years , but this is genius. Put 5 gold stars on your fridge. Or axe handle.
Good stuff
Awesome
brilliant
That is cool! I'm going to my garage now because I have several extra files!
I use the saw works great
Use the file that comes on your multi tool, or that you use on the axe. Better than the old Magnesium strip too.
I thought this was click bait but that was awesome. Gonna try tbat out
Morning Dan...and Happy New Year's from Wisconsin. and BTW...better tighten up the tension on your saw chain, eh? Smiles.
Ace stuff dude
Nice video, and a great tip! New sub!
Little fireworks. Nice video!
Ferro rods are a great impliment and handier than a pocket on a tee shirt, but there's just something about the old timey flint and steel.
Awesome 👍🏾
Have you tried taking the spark plug out of the chainsaw, holding the shavings near the plug, and pulling the rope to make the plug spark, and thereby start a fire! 🤣
