USS Gerald R. Ford: Inside US Navy's LARGEST CONTROL ROOM | Aircraft Carrier Documentary

  • A carrier flight deck is a dangerous place. To avoid disaster, it’s crucial to know what’s happening where and when.
    Guys gathered around a table, playing with toy airplanes: It’s a scene you’d expect to find in the back of a comic book store frequented by geeky teenagers. But it’s happening 24 hours a day on u.s. aircraft carriers around the globe.
    In this video, we will dive deep into how US Navy Aircraft Carrier Handlers manage flight deck operations and keep these powerful machines running.
    The aircraft handler is responsible for the safe and efficient management of all aircraft movements on the flight deck and in the hangar bay. With multiple aircraft taking off and landing every few minutes, the handler must make split-second decisions to ensure the safety of the aircraft, crew, and personnel on the deck. They must ensure that the aircraft are loaded into the catapult in a timely fashion and that they are ready to recover the aircraft on time. They also direct the elevator operator to move aircraft in real-time, making sure that the aircraft are only a few feet apart during takeoff and landing. #aircraftcarrier #usnavy #ussgeraldrford

    i was 7 years usaf, and the navy has a much tougher job than we did: if the base gets over run, we evacuate and let the army deal with it. everyone on a ship does everything and naval aviation is no exception. they have to deal with fire control to repairing and operating high performance aircraft. that's a lot to keep track of. much respect and admiration for my navy brothers ❤🇺🇸💪🏻

    Loved every minute of it and still miss it after retiring in 97.

    I spent 4 years on the USS Theodore Roosevelt from 86 when she was commissioned (missed being a Plank Owner by one week) and got out just before Desert Storm. I was a red shirt Aviation Ordnancemen, or AO. All great memories and I wish I would have stayed in. I almost reenlisted when Desert Storm broke out, but I didn't have the foresight. I was ready for the next chapter to start and was blinded. Too bad. I joined on the delayed entry program, which means I signed up when I was 17 and didn't go to basic until after my 18th B-Day. But you start accumulating service time immediately. I could have retired @ 37 years old! or did 30 and retired at 47. Then I would have been able to do anything with the rest of my life.

    If you have your own power system separate from the rest of the ship… so if the ship get damaged with ship wide power outage, this board operating under its own power source separate from the ship would still be operational. 💡

    Mistake at the 4 min mark. The comment was that the "newer" Nimitz class carriers have 3 hanger bays, while that is true, the comment leads one to assume that older carriers did not have three hanger bays. In fact at least of my personal knowledge everything from the USS Essex CV-9 (lead ship of the WWII Essex class carriers had 3 hanger bays.

    why do aircraft not fall over or off the deck when they park them so close to the edge? I mean you must expect the roughest seas possible on a blue water vessel, right?

    • @zedsdeadbaby
      @zedsdeadbaby Před 6 měsíci

      They are tied down tightly with cables, so even in rough seas they stay solidly in place with no movement at all. Think of the cargo being tied down on C-130 transport planes, it's very much like that
