I'm from India as well and I can say that people (not all) do not care about cleanliness here. No matter what, you ll see littering in most places except malls or metros etc. Rivers certainly are seen as holy and people visit there but still they throw the trash and pollute it so badly. Unless government starts strict laws like Singapore, nothing will improve.

When people are poor, trash is not the first thing people care about. Also proper waste handling is lacking in many parts of the world - you pick up the trash from the river and have to throw it in some pile elsewhere.

Majority of that population is semi educated or illiterate, living with poverty, struggling with every day life. Why are they all not picking a peice of trash? If they all grab even a few peices each their"Precious"water source would be clean! I can't understand why their waters are so so polluted!? Everyone needs to take responsibility if they want a clean river! We do a yearly river clean up on the Cowichan lake and river and if everyone helps the work load is minimal! I'm so so proud of were we live and how clean our waters are!

It is heartbreaking to see the amount of plastic thrown by humans in the open environment which eventually flows into the ocean with the help of these precious rivers. A good human intent is the solution wherein each one of us says "No to Plastic". These people waiting and offering prayers to the river are one of those majority people in the country who are not at all concerned about mother nature and turn a blind eye in keeping cleanliness in the sorrounding.

Sorry but this is one of the cleanest rivers I've seen overseas. Vietnamese can't even fish in the city river because the lure won't fall in the water too many bottles in the way.
The positive thing is its cute that our people manage to find so much joy in such simple things. Next step is to prioritize on working together and clean up the messy river and we're good to go. Cheers.
