  • The trick to playing the piano two-handed is to ensure that the rhythms played by the left and right hands are in harmony with each other. This is the overlapping of different note values, that is, different rhythms, used in both hands on a tempo basis. No matter how different and complex the note values played by the left and right hands during a beat are, they MUST OVERCOME WITH EACH OTHER. Finally, the score written for both hands shares the same time, so both hands will play notes or rest duration with different values but equal values in total, on each beat of a certain and fixed tempo. When playing the piano, a melody is created based on the tempo by both hands. Two different melodies with the same harmonic structure in both hands are played by overlapping the note values.
Since the piano is a musical instrument played with ten fingers, it is the richest in terms of harmony. When it comes to solo musical instruments, harmonic richness peaks in the piano. In addition to the advantage of sound width, the piano played with two hands is a musical instrument in which harmony and melody are used together in the most effective way. Thanks to this equipment, the limits of harmonic and melodic richness in piano works are pushed, and this richness is especially admirable in classical music and jazz.
Being able to play the notes written in the F and G keys of the right and left hands on the piano requires long-term and disciplined training.
Although it may seem like two different melody pieces played with two hands, piano works are a composition of melody and harmony shared between two hands. It is important for piano learners to understand this basic principle.
In this video, we share the first part of the exercises we developed in two-hand rhythm harmony.
