The thing I loved about this one is how she creates a relationship between the disenfranchised communities and the SFF community. She talks at some length, too, about how people with disabilities who are writing specific, that their (our… my…) stories matter, and that we NEED to write them, because we have a voice, and we deserve to use that voice.
Like I said in a previous comment: phenomenal.

Tbh it's refreshing to see a masterclass that's focused more toward intermediate writers because I think most courses focus on basics. that's understandable, but it leaves A LOT of people out

Sooooo lemme find out there's a workbook! Not that I wasn't already gonna take it again and go through it with my story, but now I really gotta take it again with this workbook I missed. This was such a fun experience. Thanks for collabing with me! You and @Becca C. Smith are awesome!
I have to admit that until N.K. Jemisin I hadn't really read any adult queer stories. Like minor stuff, but nothing with significant relationships and nothing as an adult, but the way in which she wrote the things she did was as if they were so common that often time I missed them during that first read. You are so right with how she treats it as such a nonissue you don't feel anyway about it because you're not supposed to. I feel like that (among a host of other things) is part of her true genius.
Also, the kitten playtime was everything!!!! I'm definitely even more intrigued to take the Neil Gaiman class now since they're your top two. Have you taken Roxanne Gay's Masterclass? I saw she had one and know you mentioned a Skillshare class of hers.

I went through the masterclass a couple weeks ago and it was freaking amazing! Now I'm close-reading The Fifth Season in a "Read Like a Writer" course at university. :') N. K. Jemisin is GENIUS.
    ***
Also, speaking of ages or time periods in sci-fi, there's a period known as the "Golden Age" of science fiction, which generally refers to the old or hard sci-fi (more focused on the science and tech concepts), and there's the "New Wave" of Science Fiction movement, which started around the mid-60's, and it was all about trying to elevate science fiction as a literary genre. Soft sci-fi became more common with that movement. Frank Herbert's Dune series and Ursula K. Le Guin's sci-fi novels are examples of soft sci-fi from around the New Wave times. I think New Wave as a movement died out, but the idea of more literary or soft science fiction stayed. (But don't take my word for it. I literally learned about this last month, while researching my chosen genres for that university course I'm taking.)
I think that in more recent decades, the line between sci-fi and fantasy has blurred a lot. For example, Dune is marketed as sci-fi but could easily be fantasy as well. Even Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy has been marketed as either.
As for spec fic, I think the umbrella also includes magical realism, dystopian fiction, and a few others.

Heyyy! Thoughts on worldbuilding for your story Kate, and how death would affect it:
Well one reason so many believe in God is because of you might call it, worldbuilding evidence that points towards a goodness and regenerative nature -- life cycles, consciences, love, the beautiful design of nature, mindboggling vastness, inherent logic of day and night, and etc
so if death was a god, i would imagine to flip things in reverse -- evidence of death controlling the world, so wastelands perhaps, deserts, animals that feed on death like vultures more preeminent, illogic, non-regenerative nature, etc
    I hope that's helpful! xx

    This is long, I'm sorry.
For Project Death and it being a desert planet, do you know why it's a desert planet and how life developed on the planet?
In Stargate SG1 they explained, well more retconned, the reason from going from a desert planet (from the movie) to a green planet because of the atmospheric conditions needed for hominoid life to develop and thrive.
I know you switched to a new idea later into class, but I had the thought and wanted to bring it up.
As for the different periods of Sci-fi, I look as them differently. More in Sci-fi than in Fantasy, I feel you have to look at the time they were written. And each time span has its own ages... To me anyway.
The "Father" of Sci-fi as a genre is Jules Verne. When he wrote the technology like submarines were in their infancy, the idea on how someone could fly was forming. The technology was changing and the acceptance of changing science.
In the 1940's the Sci-fi serials became popular. Sci-fi was used to change perspectives on race, class, education and so on.
That lead to the "Alien" "Space cadet" style comics, and the alagory of the evils of communism.
And so on and so forth.
The last Golden Age of Sci-Fi was the late '80s early '90s with movies. Star Wars, Star Trek (Movies and shows), Blade Runner, you get my point.
I'm confused about what speculative fiction is. I know it's under the umbrella Sci-fi, but I've seen very different examples of the genre. To me it's looking at "what if this happened instead of that?" Or "what if this happened in the future and lead to 'this'".

I LOVE NK Jemisin, but I think that "If you work hard you will eventually make it" is kind of a naive perspective.
There are dozens if not thousands of talented people who create incredible stories every year that never see the light of day because; (1) traditional publishing is oversaturated in their market (2) they present an uncomfortable position that publishers aren't willing to discuss (3) they have a physical or mental health barrier preventing them from being able to advocate for their own writing to publishers or to seek representation (4) they lack the business acumen or finances to adequately produce and promote themselves through self publishing.
Inspiring people is great and all, but ignoring the barriers to entry, ESPECIALLY as someone from a historically underserved population in publishing, is kind of bordering on gaslighty...
