I think the reason why Eminem says that if he were Black, he would sell half as much speaks to the hypocrisy of American society. Additionally, as he says later on, he reached an audience that perhaps wasn't familiar with hip hop. And because he is white, he somehow managed to break through that barrier. Moreover, even though his songs might suddenly be more controversial than those of a Black rapper, the numbers had already skyrocketed. He was a global phenomenon, and it was impossible to cancel him. That's why he made this song. The government tried to cancel Eminem, many pressure groups also attempted, and there were cities that wanted to suspend his concerts as well. None of that worked
And you have to factor in the time period as well. Now? No. Then? Absolutely.
Rap wasn't nearly as accepted or popular in the mainstream as it is today its really night and day how the genre and its artist are viewed.
But black rappers had "controversial" content in their songs too, a lot of that was their real lives though and since it wasn't representative of white ppl they went unnoticed, can't ignore the violence, gangster life, political commentary, etc that was already in rap with black rappers, it just wasn't controversial bc they weren't white and it mainly represented the lives of black ppl

But we are talking about the same thing... when I said more controversial, I meant content that no one had addressed in rap before... which doesn't mean it's good... I've been following Eminem since he came out, but not everything he released actually appeals to me... The controversial content I'm talking about is that... but above all... as you said and as he says in White America... it's because he's white and because he reaches a population that hadn't previously been familiar with hip hop that he gets so much attention... But of course, many rappers had made controversial songs before... just look at NWA... but as you also said... it didn't have the reach that Eminem did...

I disagree. Everyone says how he would've sold less as a black artist. Meanwhile we have Michael Jackson in the 80s, as a young black man, shattering world record sales with Thriller.
If you're good and capture an audience, you're simply good and the color of your skin won't matter. You'll sell world wide.
It's pretty hard to say as a lot of Em's early content comes from his experience as an underdog in the underground which is inndue part to him being white. He would have probably been a respected rapper regardless but he would be a lot different and maybe not stand out as much @atlasli0n

Eminem produced this song. He is a producer who produced a lot of his own songs. He doesn’t get enough credit for his work as a producer
He’s right. Em was able to reach an untapped demographic. Coincidentally, the largest one. There are so many great black rappers, if not on, very near his level that never hit mainstream for reasons you already know.
2002 was a crazy time for Eminem. His rise happened right around the time of streaming music’s rise (illegally). This coupled with his race and rebellion again the pop princess and superficial facade of celebrity worship (think today’s standard but way more curated) made him explode on the scene like to a level of Michael Jackson. The government and regulatory boards tried to get his music removed by suing him (FCC, Parental advisor stickers, etc.) at the same time his mother was suing him for 10 mil. Kim cheated on him and he beat the guy who then claimed he did so with a gun, so he was facing felony charges. He fought for custody (and won) of his daughter and Kim’s niece he’d adopted (he later adopted Kim’s daughter from another man and his own brother as well). Also at this time was 9/11, so patriotism was at an all time high and he spoke out against the war in Iraq and George bush a lot, so he was protested against. He was also protested against by LGBTQ+ community (which he later remedied by revealing his a long term and close friendship with Elton John and stopping use of the F slur.).
It’s hard to conceptualize this period by today’s standards because the norm was so heavily controlled by media without social media, etc. So Eminem’s brash and angry and honest words broke through the “gated community” like you said in a way that no one had in decades.
Add that to the rap beefs of this time and heavy drug use. 2002 was crazy. Also the best album imho.
The whole "I woulda sold half" line he kind of elaborates on later... He invaded the suburbs in a way that no black rapper really had before, and probably never could for real. Back in the 90s anyway. "They connected with me too because I looked like them". He brought hip hop, legitimate hip hop to middle America and got all their dollars.
NWA & Eminem.. the only rappers to be targeted by the congress of the United States of America... legends!
I have no idea about the sales. But being white worked against him originally, in the battle rap scene and getting signed. When he eventually released the slim shady LP and the MM LP white kids started listening and buying his music. These kids previously didnt really listen to hip hop, so this was a huge new market that skyrocketed his sales. But white suburban kids listening to Eminem made the hard working/christian parents pissed off. This was reflected in media and even congress, as a debate around the negative influence of hip hop music was taking place. Eminem (and Manson, among others) were blamed for youth crimes, kids doing drugs and so on.

but I’d be willing to bet they would have found a way to cancel him if he was. The only reason EM could keep going was because of his fanbase / popularity. Double edged sword I suppose.

Today, if Em were black he’d have more respect and maybe sell more or the same. Back when he dropped, Hip Hop wasn’t mainstream in white America…he did the most to change that.
If Em was black, he'd be the next Muhammad Ali.

I agree with your take about his sales if he were black. I think he truly believes this even though he’s just humble bc people have shoved this thought down his throat for so long but there’s a reason no other white rapper has ever had the success he has and there’s been plenty of white rappers before and after him and I’ve seen so many people sh!t on him and discredit him to this day bc of his skin color! Plus every top OG lyrical rapper in the game puts him in their top 5. There’s a whole documentary on what other rappers think of him and nearly all of them think he’s amazing and top 5 dead or alive.. plus he was the most popular rapper in countries that were non white like several African countries like Nigeria, several Middle East countries, and many Asian countries.

I think Em would have more respect within the hip hop community if he was black, but the whole reason he got noticed and picked up as much notoriety and fame was because he was white, and he was saying a bunch of shit that rappers had been saying for a while if not even wilder sometimes. He caused a lot of problems because his skin put him on the map and lawmakers at the time were concerned that he had too much influence over the white suburban youth. All of this built his fame, but his skills were the real thing so he was able to maintain that throughout the years. In my opinion Royce is pretty much just as talented as Em is, but you don't hear nothing about Royce, the man is a damn near underground artist. What you're talking about with him being white making things tougher for him does apply to his career, but I'd say more while he was on the come-up as opposed to after he'd been signed by Dre and became a massive hit.

If he was black he would get more credit from the avg black hip hop fan but less sells. Like even if you cut his number in half he still be top 3 maybe still number 1 in sells all time. If he was black there be no questions to who the goat is.

I think BACK THEN it was true, because the white demographic wasn't as open to hip-hop as it is now. Eminem introduced hip hop to many white households and to the world outside of the US really.
So when he was underground no one wanted to sign him coz he was a white boy, then because he was white he could get a much higher fanbase than basically anyone.
And today its funny and ironic because people wont give him enough credit coz he is white. He is being downplayed all the time and his skin color is again the biggest problem he has in the culture.
