Recently I played this song while cleaning my shop with my 20y/o employee. She was bopping along and she asked "who is this?". I said Madonna and she assumed this was from her new album. When I told her it was 2003 she was stunned! She said, and I quote, "but it sounds exactly like what's trendy now" and all I said was " duh, it's Madonna!"

Her style and stylist here are brilliant. She looks electrifying. In fact, she's so editorial, genius and just possess an avant-garde pragmatic mind whom wouldn't freeze up in just a dogmatic thinking. Art is Madonna. Madonna is art.
As much as I like Madonna, I think it's fair to recognize when she acts 'stupidly'. The style and stylist you're praising was ripped off French photographer Guy Bourdin's work. His son filed a lawsuit which was settled out of court.
@@samuelb6550 hi, I am a typical Asian whom once grew up adoring art from a distance and always find inspirations from much more influencing designers from western world. When I finally reaching age that would enough allowing me to live life full-fledge, one of first thing I do was to find a New Yorker to paint portrait of me, copy some coutures from magazines and just see western theathers. It was unfettering, something contemplating. I don't know how I do it, but most of times I just 'do it myself' as none in-sync with my 'antics'. Her abilities and initiative to collaborate with vast upcoming stylists and artiste are deserving high-tier on my appraisal! Everyone needs inspirations to explore thus delve onto much deeper be it in their workmanship and specially in her crafts, stage showmanship, etc. For me, she really typifies 'modern' bohemian attitude since early on and just keeps on experimenting. That's a gem quality that majority of those on her league lack thereof or simply went missing. Apart of her, I can see Grace Jones, Cher, possibly Lady Gaga, but it wasn't so many. So I like her, positive attitude are rarity

For me it honestly the timing and her choice to switch up her style. I remember that a lot of People companies. I remeber her apologizing and switching back a few months after it was released. I just remember this song being released way after American Life debuted. I’m like this is the bomb. But I didn’t hear it anywhere accept the mall or certain tv commercials. This was her best track imho that year.
I saw an interview when this album came out where they were praising her for the albums she had made prior to this and how well they had done and how she finally got Grammys and this album was not a huge success (idk?) she was accustomed to and she stayed very diplomatic in her response, “I was able to make an album full of my own music that’s a complete success to me. If one person buys it and enjoys it that’s success to me”

Greetings from germany. Came here in 2023 for the very first time. Never ever heard this song or the "American Life" album before. Or even watched this video. The ignition for me was a podcast on the german radio (at "NDR 2") were Mr. Peter Urban and his mate talked about the life of Madonna. They checked every album and when they reached "American Life" from the early 2000s (of which i have never heard before) it really kicked me. What should i say: although i am into Metal from the very beginning in the early 1980s and didn't follow the path of Madonna that much (her singles were all around....) THIS SONG AND THE WHOLE ALBUM REALLY KICKED ME! Great and awesome songs with unbelievable catchy melodies. And: she looked so cool back then. Just .....great!

I'm french and it's OBVIOUS ! This video is an homage to the french fashion photographer Guy Bourdin. Have a look to his pictures and more specifically the ones he made, in the seventies, for the french women shoe company, Charles Jourdan. Those pictures are his trademark, saturation of colours, make up outrageously present on the model's face and his unique mix of death and sexuality (death whish and sexual drive). It's just incredible, he was a genius and he owned the 70's and the first half of the 80's.

The visual style of Guy Bourdin is all over this video. The lurid light simulating a flashgun, the vivid colours slightly mismatched, the playful but slightly depraved themes are just like his editorials for French Vogue in the 1970s. Madonna was probably well familiar with his work.

This video was so lazy and the era so messy. First we get a boring flag video for the first single, then a trashy and dull video for Hollywood, then Nothing Fails as a single with no video, but then Love Profusion with a video???? What the f was this era? Since the cancellation of American Life video she went safe and boring with her videos. Thankfully Madame X was kinda interesting but too little too late.
