I have a perspective that brings the beauty of faith to the athiest. I would love to tell you about it sometime. God is Good (καλός). Nothing more, nothing less.
I'll try in a comment, but it may be tough@@Over-Boy42. Knowing that the Idea (ἰδέα) of the Good (καλός) came from Ancient Greece and that it sharpened the conception of monotheism (the way we understand it by all Abrahamic religions) my suggestion to you would be to 'understand' (emphasis added) the beauty of the sacred texts. Minimize your skepticism without sacrificing reason. Try and steelman every position with the goal of extracting the wisdom. Make sure you do this exercise (as if you were writing the text yourself) from the perspective of different people at different times throughout the last 2k years. Become equally familiar with Homer and Plato (leave Aristotle out for now), and you will see a new beauty of lineage that dates back to Babylonia. Don't take the Garden of Eden as literal, unless you can understand that a metaphor, if used correctly (which it rarely is), would be through the eyes of her/his creator (humans just like us). Once you have this pedigree of context, the next thing that you need to do is cultivate the four virtues; prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. If those heuristics are not easy to imagine, try imagining what the perfect man would do in any situation. Then, that little voice (your own personal narration) of reasoned thought is what the religious founders call the holy spirit. Kinda beautiful that they would elevate something that atheists like you and I would describe as simple existence. The takeaway that I want to leave you with is not so that you change your opinion but so that you widen your knowledge of where this stuff came from and the underlying wisdom. Wisdom (by definition) is independent from evil, badness, or sin. Loving wisdom makes you a king. A Philosopher King.

I enjoy Durant’s research and analysis of major world events and individuals and how these have made the world we live in today, especially the philosophers. But his dismissive observations on Friedrich Nietzsche’s impact on man’s thinking and his prescient remarks that eerily predicted a world war were not acknowledged by Durant. Without Catholicism the West would not exist. Please read 'How the Irish Saved Civilisation''. The Blessed mother Mary and St Michael are the reason why I became Catholic. I was an intellectual pagan, into the esoteric, and found myself enamoured with Mary and Michael. I wanted to practice some sort of pseudo-santeria and worship them like a pagan would Apollo. But in the course of a month after that point, I found myself drawn to the Church and entered RCIA by January 2018. It's been a huge change in my life, coming from a background not just of paganism, but atheism and satanism before that. And I have Our Lady and St Michael to thank for that. I sought to worship them in themselves, but, as the saints all tell us, they pointed me directly to Christ. And now, I'm a devout Latin Mass attending, rosary-slinging, Roman Catholic.

Why does Durant speak of capitalists and communism in the 1500's? This is hugely anachronistic, and can only be a sign of him reading his own ideological prejudices into the past. If the peasants revolted against the clerisy and kings, after Luther had set the soul free from corrupt papal authority, this general movement toward common property against the moral depravity and unearned luxury of the powerful is a tendency older than communism, a tendency which communism gave name and political representation to only much later.
@@jackshaftoe7241 the word wasn't in existence before the 1700's. There's no sense using it in this context except to make suggestions that are historically anachronistic.
I'd heard the word used in the 1700's. I hadn't realised it was so recent (not that the idea is necessarily as recent as the cliché goes: "There is nothing new under the sun.")
Commonality was the usual in human history. Private property was hardly considered, as usually rich nobles could have all property seized by the sovereign (Niall Ferguson). And this was pre Hegelian, which elevated "communism" to a state responsibilty, or so Marx thought.
Will Durant, or who ever is editing this presentation obvious doesn't understand the Roman Catholic Church and their heresy from God and His word, nor does he/they know God, the One God who made them and has one purpose for all of life. Is 43:7
@norhetoric1 You clearly don't understand God's word which governs all matters, history, historians, language, souls, ...for His glory. When a person or organization is contrary to God and His word they need to repent and believe God for His plan. Again, I refer you back to the main purpose of all life, Is. 43:7
@norhetoric1 this was the mind set of the Roman gov't., the Catholic church of the Reformers, Nazi Germany, Communism, and rebellious western culture. you don't agree with them get rid of them. This is how you deal with God's truth, with those you don't agree with?
@norhetoric1 Exactly my point, you or Socrates or some man are gods deciding truth, right and wrong. Main problem with that is your wrong, some times, all the time, but never knowing when you are, even when you think you're right so never knowing; labile truth changes with man (you, Socrates, ...), no standard that's absolute. You see this is the "proof", yes "proof" of God that you can't have, He is always right, true, just, holy, pure, you and all other god's are not. (Rom. 3:23) You, just as Socrates, will pass away and all your beliefs about what is a "myth" and what is true but God's word was before creation and will continue after this creation is destroyed. Try this truth out that your Socrates nor any other religion, or belief system can't come close, "love your enemies" ,"for a friend some would die" and some would dye on the battle field for their buddies, a fire fighter would die to save the child in a burning building, a classmate might die for fellow class mates in a school shooting, who would you die ? "your enemy", sound foolish, no it's the height of love for you, you are an enemy of God. Take a look at another historical example of dying for ones enemy besides Jesus Christ, Derk Willems: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk_Willems God of Creation is the only One who can radically change billions of people from a life of degradation like drunks, wife beaters, bums, prostitutes, profane, criminals, drug addicts, murders, ...into productive, pleasant, respectful, courteous, helpful, servants, that serve man and God for His glory. There is no, not one, not any belief system, philosophy, science, religion, god, social or political justice ideology that comes remotely close to the transformation that Christianity has had on billions for the improvement of all of culture. Don't give me that meger argument of exceptions of those who called themselves Christians that did horrible things, I can call my self a woman, that doesn't make me one, so too are most of those who claim Christianity and have done horrible things it's not because a Christian did a horrible thing, they were horrible people calling themselves a Christian, but it was a dilusion, just like you have that you can claim some kind of truth. So give me your greatest "truth" that all mankind can live by. Give me an example of greater love, give me power to do it as well, give me peace, hope, joy, power, that overcomes death, give me life that's victory no matter circumstance for now and gives life eternal. You give me this and I'll consider your "truth" if not go back to your worthless "Socratising", this is the myth, that you or any man has anything to offer man or God. You are dead in your sins and the "proof" of it is you're going to die, and w/o the Only Savior, you'll be held accountable for your pride, arrogance, deception, living a myth, rejecting God and His Savior; that's that three letter word that sinners hate, "sin".

Certain religions, but not true Christianity.
@@johnbrowne3950 then true Christianity is symbolic and rarely practiced
@@davyroger3773 True Christianity is rarely practiced, but it is true. Unfortunately not everyone who claims to be Christian is Christian. They just have religion, not saving faith.

The section on the catholic reformation begins
Will Durant ? He did covering many different subjects and personalities and histories. So it's not will but thank you doubly do right Will Durant !!!!!!
Protestants & Catholics is why. Please one, offend the other. Am I right people?
I can do better than that and offend them all at the same time.

Citation, please? Is this from his volume on the reformation or from his separate work on the matter?

I enjoy Durant’s research and analysis of major world events and individuals and how these have made the world we live in today, especially the philosophers. But his dismissive observations on Friedrich Nietzsche’s impact on man’s thinking and his prescient remarks that eerily predicted a world war were not acknowledged by Durant. Durant’s book on the history of philosophers basically put down Nietzsche as a minor figure in history of little importance. Durant failed to appreciate his influence on existentialism, Jung and Freud.
It makes sense given Nietzsche's apparent anti-Jewish rhetoric.
@@stolapkt1 He was a Jew himself, so him speaking from a psychiatric standpoint about people he knows should be paid attention to. Though one may disagree with his conclusions, of course - as long as one doesn't call him a crypto-nazi because it's the easy thing to do.
Nietzsche is highly overrated, Read Betrand Russels sections on Nietzsche and you'll find them equally as scathing.
I should have commentary on Frederick Nietzsche so much disdain for the so-called slave mentality of judeo Christian morality and yet Joan of Arc had more will in a pinky then he in his entire body
Is there any more apt word than 'evil' to describe this institution?
He glossed over a lot of history.

It is appalling how ANYONE can allow themselves to be a Christian, knowing the awful things that have been done in the name of Christ. 🤦♂️
Without Catholicism the West would not exist. Please read 'How the Irish
Saved Civilisation''. The Blessed mother Mary and St Michael are the
reason why I became Catholic. I was an intellectual pagan, into the
esoteric, and found myself enamoured with Mary and Michael. I wanted to
practice some sort of pseudo-santeria and worship them like a pagan
would Apollo. But in the course of a month after that point, I found
myself drawn to the Church and entered RCIA by January 2018. It's been a
huge change in my life, coming from a background not just of paganism,
but atheism and satanism before that. And I have Our Lady and St Michael
to thank for that. I sought to worship them in themselves, but, as the
saints all tell us, they pointed me directly to Christ. And now, I'm a
devout Latin Mass attending, rosary-slinging, Roman Catholic.
Western Civilization can go to hell with the Catholic Church, so long as he have the pure gospel recovered by the Reformation.
verbiage escapes me but not my appreciation R.c
I see you. I’m from another dimension. Do you see me yet?
I see shades of something like a ripple in the space around me - it comes and goes but yes - I think you are there.

"Communism" was used to describe many ideologies before Marx. It was often applied to any ideology of a Commune.
Epicurus was a "communist": he lived in a commune.
Commonality was the usual in human history. Private property was hardly considered, as usually rich nobles could have all property seized by the sovereign (Niall Ferguson). And this was pre Hegelian, which elevated "communism" to a state responsibilty, or so Marx thought.

I understand how and what Marx reacted against.
Your connection to Marx is spot on. But extend further and this help explain Fascist Germany and Spain.
Interpreting history through the prism of Marx is a recipe for a contaminated worldview.

@norhetoric1 and you are god so you can declare truth.
@norhetoric1 and who decides what reason determines truth?
@norhetoric1 Exactly my point, you or Socrates or some man are gods deciding truth, right and wrong. Main problem with that is your wrong, some times, all the time, but never knowing when you are, even when you think you're right so never knowing; labile truth changes with man (you, Socrates, ...), no standard that's absolute. You see this is the "proof", yes "proof" of God that you can't have, He is always right, true, just, holy, pure, you and all other god's are not. (Rom. 3:23)
You, just as Socrates, will pass away and all your beliefs about what is a "myth" and what is true but God's word was before creation and will continue after this creation is destroyed.
Take a look at another historical example of dying for ones enemy besides Jesus Christ, Derk Willems: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk_Willems
God of Creation is the only One who can radically change billions of people from a life of degradation like drunks, wife beaters, bums, prostitutes, profane, criminals, drug addicts, murders, ...into productive, pleasant, respectful, courteous, helpful, servants, that serve man and God for His glory.
