    I listen to Durant nightly. He has written so much with eloquent erudition. If he only one of these it would be a triumph. I'm almost finished with them all. So much but long for more. When I finished I will probably start all over. All this with no crumby adds. This is truly a treasure! Only 216 comments but i feel a kinship with them all. Aren't we blessed to hear Durant's knowledge and insight?

    1:41:19 The Anabaptist community of Austerlitz is strikingly similar to one that emigrated to the USA from Germany in the mid 1800s and settled in an area known as the Amana Colonies in the eastern part of the state of Iowa. While their communalism ended during the Great Depression, the culture and architecture of the area is still very distinctive, and it remains one of the best places in that part of the world for authentic old German cuisine and handicrafts. A handful of the older residents still speak German as a first language, though a form of it hybridized with English and lacking any words that were added to the German language after the mid 1800s.

    • @DurantandFriends
      @DurantandFriends  Před 10 měsíci

      I'll try in a comment, but it may be tough@@Over-Boy42. Knowing that the Idea (ἰδέα) of the Good (καλός) came from Ancient Greece and that it sharpened the conception of monotheism (the way we understand it by all Abrahamic religions) my suggestion to you would be to 'understand' (emphasis added) the beauty of the sacred texts. Minimize your skepticism without sacrificing reason. Try and steelman every position with the goal of extracting the wisdom. Make sure you do this exercise (as if you were writing the text yourself) from the perspective of different people at different times throughout the last 2k years. Become equally familiar with Homer and Plato (leave Aristotle out for now), and you will see a new beauty of lineage that dates back to Babylonia. Don't take the Garden of Eden as literal, unless you can understand that a metaphor, if used correctly (which it rarely is), would be through the eyes of her/his creator (humans just like us). Once you have this pedigree of context, the next thing that you need to do is cultivate the four virtues; prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. If those heuristics are not easy to imagine, try imagining what the perfect man would do in any situation. Then, that little voice (your own personal narration) of reasoned thought is what the religious founders call the holy spirit. Kinda beautiful that they would elevate something that atheists like you and I would describe as simple existence. The takeaway that I want to leave you with is not so that you change your opinion but so that you widen your knowledge of where this stuff came from and the underlying wisdom. Wisdom (by definition) is independent from evil, badness, or sin. Loving wisdom makes you a king. A Philosopher King.

      I had interesting conversation with friend who's been living in Germany for 10 years now.
      His biggest fascination with Germans is that they never(at least publicly) see themselves as best nation-contrary to every other nation in the world.
      He sees reasoning of that in fact that they lost 2 big wars, and been punished heavily for that.
      I'd add they managed alternative ways to accomplish something they wanted without war.
      Point is, they work hard, but they are biggest EU economy for good reason.
      Sooner or later, work for feudals or work for state, will payoff.

      State takes about third of your wages right off the top even before you get your paycheck and then you are taxed for every monetary transaction you make, unless you make transactions illegally and then you end up in jail if caught...
      The genius of our ruling class is that it has kept a majority of the people from ever questioning the inequity of a system where most people drudge along, paying heavy taxes for which they get nothing in return.

    So where in the Bible does it say, "Burn your enemies, kill those who don't agree with you"? That in itself should have shown that the Roman Catholic church was not obeying Jesus, who said, "Love your enemies." Or any of the Protestants who said kill people. The worst the Bible said to do was to not associate with those who were living like pagans.

But Durant seems to value objectivity as well as beautiful poetry. And R.C. obliges with a wonderful recitation.

I found the first one incomplete (nowhere close as accurate as Nehru's 60 hours of Indian history) and highly biased and the latter interspersed with brief moments of almost transcendent thinking but in general very inconsistent and never expressing a philosophical line of his own for more than a sentence or short paragraph often later to contradict himself. He is more of a thinking historian than a philosopher pro zionism and communism. I will not even bother to listen to his "the jews", which is surely a fable. I enjoy Durant’s research and analysis of major world events and individuals and how these have made the world we live in today, especially the philosophers. But his dismissive observations on Friedrich Nietzsche’s impact on man’s thinking and his prescient remarks that eerily predicted a world war were not acknowledged by Durant. Durant’s book on the history of philosophers basically put down Nietzsche as a minor figure in history of little importance. Durant failed to appreciate his influence on existentialism, Jung and Freud.

    Without Catholicism the West would not exist. Please read 'How the Irish
    Saved Civilisation''. The Blessed mother Mary and St Michael are the
    reason why I became Catholic. I was an intellectual pagan, into the
    esoteric, and found myself enamoured with Mary and Michael. I wanted to
    practice some sort of pseudo-santeria and worship them like a pagan
    would Apollo. But in the course of a month after that point, I found
    myself drawn to the Church and entered RCIA by January 2018. It's been a
    huge change in my life, coming from a background not just of paganism,
    but atheism and satanism before that. And I have Our Lady and St Michael
    to thank for that. I sought to worship them in themselves, but, as the
    saints all tell us, they pointed me directly to Christ. And now, I'm a
    devout Latin Mass attending, rosary-slinging, Roman Catholic.

    Why does Durant speak of capitalists and communism in the 1500's? This is hugely anachronistic, and can only be a sign of him reading his own ideological prejudices into the past. If the peasants revolted against the clerisy and kings, after Luther had set the soul free from corrupt papal authority, this general movement toward common property against the moral depravity and unearned luxury of the powerful is a tendency older than communism, a tendency which communism gave name and political representation to only much later.

      @norhetoric1 and who decides what reason determines truth?

    • @vaughnlonganecker986
      @vaughnlonganecker986 Před 5 lety +1

      @norhetoric1 Exactly my point, you or Socrates or some man are gods deciding truth, right and wrong. Main problem with that is your wrong, some times, all the time, but never knowing when you are, even when you think you're right so never knowing; labile truth changes with man (you, Socrates, ...), no standard that's absolute. You see this is the "proof", yes "proof" of God that you can't have, He is always right, true, just, holy, pure, you and all other god's are not. (Rom. 3:23)
      You, just as Socrates, will pass away and all your beliefs about what is a "myth" and what is true but God's word was before creation and will continue after this creation is destroyed.
      Try this truth out that your Socrates nor any other religion, or belief system can't come close, "love your enemies" ,"for a friend some would die" and some would dye on the battle field for their buddies, a fire fighter would die to save the child in a burning building, a classmate might die for fellow class mates in a school shooting, who would you die ? "your enemy", sound foolish, no it's the height of love for you, you are an enemy of God. Take a look at another historical example of dying for ones enemy besides Jesus Christ, Derk Willems: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk_Willems
      God of Creation is the only One who can radically change billions of people from a life of degradation like drunks, wife beaters, bums, prostitutes, profane, criminals, drug addicts, murders, ...into productive, pleasant, respectful, courteous, helpful, servants, that serve man and God for His glory. There is no, not one, not any belief system, philosophy, science, religion, god, social or political justice ideology that comes remotely close to the transformation that Christianity has had on billions for the improvement of all of culture. Don't give me that meger argument of exceptions of those who called themselves Christians that did horrible things, I can call my self a woman, that doesn't make me one, so too are most of those who claim Christianity and have done horrible things it's not because a Christian did a horrible thing, they were horrible people calling themselves a Christian, but it was a dilusion, just like you have that you can claim some kind of truth.
      So give me your greatest "truth" that all mankind can live by. Give me an example of greater love, give me power to do it as well, give me peace, hope, joy, power, that overcomes death, give me life that's victory no matter circumstance for now and gives life eternal. You give me this and I'll consider your "truth" if not go back to your worthless "Socratising", this is the myth, that you or any man has anything to offer man or God. You are dead in your sins and the "proof" of it is you're going to die, and w/o the Only Savior, you'll be held accountable for your pride, arrogance, deception, living a myth, rejecting God and His Savior; that's that three letter word that sinners hate, "sin".
