  • C-130J flight and tactical beam approach to landing at Dyess AFB in Abilene Texas. Flew out commercially on our airline friends' tails to Norfolk Virginia to pick up a stuck bird. Quiet flight home on a calm Saturday afternoon. Perfect time to fly an east-west Beam.

    Just a wicked pattern where they allow you to fly directly over the tower! Very cool and appreciate all your vids. Great tool especially for AF recruitment to the Herky birds!

      Sounds vaguely familiar. I was in the NDI shop, so I mostly knew the Corrosion Control and Structural Repair guys.

    39th FE from the Pope days here. Sounds odd only having two crew responses to the checklist. Most fun I had was the 3 ship V formation flyby at Volant Rodeo in the '80's.

    Very nice, I remember a time when there was another type of random shallow approach called a pitchout which was pretty interesting. After a few years there was a close call between a wingtip and a runway and the pitchout went the way of the dodo.
    Thanks for the vids!

    Lotta scuff marks at the touchdown point on that runway. You're lucky. Next to riding in a U2 at 70,000 feet, you're flying the plane I most want to ride.

    Is this approach similar to the "random shallow"? I've had C130s request this but never really understood what it meant.

    • @fgump52
      @fgump52 Před 2 lety +3

      Its a random shallow - abeam. The random shallow means you will be on a low altitude pattern and the abeam or "beam" means you are going to cross the runway at 90 degrees. You can do a random shallow to a highspeed downwind or to a base turn or a straight-in

    • @Mike_delta80
      @Mike_delta80 Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for that explanation. It's always been a question I had. They would ask I'd just say "approved as requested" and figure it out later. Lol

    • @ReachAviation
      @ReachAviation  Před 2 lety

      An Abeam approach (we just call it the Beam) is where we typically but not always arrive over the field 90 degrees off from the runway.

    Why is this callsign the last four of the aircraft, yet usually it’s a three digit number or a tactical callsign (CROW21 e.g.)? What are the differences? Is the four digit callsign a positioning flight?
