  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is a mental illness that is exhibited by repetitive unwanted or intrusive thoughts - the obsessions - often followed by an urge to do something repeatedly - the compulsions. It is a very serious mental illness that causes a great deal of suffering to those who have it. But did you know there can be many different ways in which OCD manifests itself? To help you get a better understanding of OCD, here are four different types of OCD and how they manifest.

    The worst part about having OCD is doubting your own memories, If i check the door, the second I turn my back away from it, my mind goes : "Are you sure that you checked the door though? What if you didn't and your house get invaded?"

      I am a Psychiatrist and my 18 year old son has struggled with OCD for a few years. Exposure therapy has worked wonders for him, but it requires a commitment on your part. It is definitely manageable, but hard until you gain control of it. It has affected his school, friendships and self esteem. Medication management has been key too! Good luck sweetie! ♥️

      Believe m you will get over it if u put on the work . I used to have it . I thought i'd never be back to who i used to be but i swear i am great rn . It will take time but eventually u'll get there. Believe me i read articles that says u cannot fully recover but that is not true.

    Society should definitely have more of a conversation around intrusive thoughts. From age 18-21 I was constantly worried that I was turning into a pedophile and a serial killer. I wanted to KMS to keep other people safe from me. Then I found out about OCD intrusive thoughts and realized that I was sick, not a monster. I confided in my psychiatrist and she prescribed me Duloxetine and it’s made things far more manageable. I rarely have those intrusive thoughts unless I forget to take my medication. It also helped to realize that the fact that I was actually worried about the thoughts meant I didn’t want to act on them. An actual pedo or serial killer would lack the empathy for others required to feel bad about it. They would relish the thoughts, not feel queasy and guilty. If you’re in the same boat, please get on medication. What’s in your head doesn’t define you, your actions do.

    I currently am going through my fifth OCD depressive episode. I was admitted into a mental hospital twice in the last month. I legitimately have nearly every type of OCD that was mentioned in this video. I have had (and still have a few of these) Pedophilia OCD, Racism OCD, Incest OCD, Contamination OCD, Ritualistic OCD, Harm OCD, False Memory OCD and more.
    The Racism OCD is EXTREMELY distressing to me. In fact, the distress is constant. My whole life I’ve been taught to be kind to all people, regardless of the color of their skin, their ethnicity, their culture, their sexuality, their age, their ability to do certain things, etc. So when I get these disgusting racist intrusive thoughts, I constantly am saying “IS THIS TRUE? DO I BELIEVE THIS?” What’s worse is that I avoid POC (mainly black people) because I’m so scared that just by being near them I will be hurting them in some illogical way that my OCD has created or I’ll have a disgusting intrusive thought about them that’s the opposite of how I typically feel. Then what’s worse is that when I avoid them to keep them safe or so that I can’t have the intrusive thoughts, my brain is like “You’re avoiding them because you’re racist and you don’t like them.” So then I get triggered by that and it’s just this vicious, debilitating cycle that makes me question myself. I’m absolutely terrified I’m never going to see black people the way I used to, without feeling fear and anxiety that convinces me I’m racist even though I NEVER want to be something so disgusting like a racist. The very thought of racism disgusts me so much that when my OCD is convincing me I’m a horrible person, I get cold sweats, shake, hyperventilate, cry, etc. Update 9/30/2022: What’s especially painful is that my OCD has gotten worse and rather than just getting intrusive thoughts about black people, it’s now ALL POC. The last three days have been hell for me. I’m so disgusted with myself and so confused. 😭
    UPDATE 10/4/2020: Racism OCD is hell on Earth.
    These last eight months have been hell on Earth. My values used to be so incredibly clear for me, but now they feel nullified and dull. I still act kind to everyone I see and talk to but I have such intense guilt for the intrusive thoughts and feelings I receive. :(
    I’ll see POC in media, on TV, in books, etc. and every time I do I feel so much shame and guilt. What I absolutely hate most about my OCD is the fact it has linked dread, fear, doubt, guilt, shame, etc. all to POC. I know in my heart that it is NOT POC who cause my OCD, it’s just that my OCD sees them as a trigger to so much pain and anxiety that as a defense mechanism I automatically feel a bit of resentment naturally now. I feel so ashamed and disgusted with myself because of that. I hope to God these horrible, fucking DISGUSTING thoughts in my head will go away someday.
    I just want my old life and self back. I feel like my values are gone and that I am now racist and trapped in this way of thinking forever due to irreversible trauma. :,(
    With the contamination OCD, I constantly feel like there is something on my hands that can cause someone to be raped or killed just by touching them or touching whatever I touched with that hand. I constantly wash my hands due to this. I constantly get thoughts that if I don’t clean my hands or wipe them off in a safe place, I purposely am trying to get something from me inside my mother or other members of my family, hence the Incest OCD. It is debilitating. I legitimately burst into tears and can’t even move when I have thoughts like that because I care for my family so much in a completely normal healthy way. OCD takes my familial love for them and convinces me that instead of normal love for my family, it’s sexual attraction. It makes me sick, and has legitimately made me hunch over and gag.
    I try to check my past memories and think “Did I wipe my hand on the table to have a “part” of me inside of my mother?” Or “When I hugged that baby when I was younger, did I molest it in anyway?” It’s horrible, terrifying, and absolutely horrific.
    When I try to compete with my compulsions, my OCD automatically tells me that I’m doing this horrible thing on purpose. That’s what’s so hard about fighting OCD. It’ll convince you that if you don’t do your compulsions, you’re trying to hurt someone indirectly.
    The Pedophilia OCD was at it’s worst when I was 15 (I’m 19 now). Like the others, it was debilitating. I couldn’t sit down anywhere in fear that a kid had sat in that place, and by sitting there something from them would crawl inside of me through my *censored* and something from a kid would be inside me, and therefore I’d be having sex with them, even though of course that’s absolutely illogical and that’s legitimately not how sex works. That’s what’s so hard about OCD. Deep down you know the compulsions are absolutely illogical but they feel so unbelievably real. I would avoid children like the plague. The way I got over this type of OCD (for the most part) was going to an Intensive Outpatient Program that specialized in Exposure Response Prevention Therapy.
    I’m now getting treatment again. It’s so incredibly hard. I wouldn’t wish OCD on my worst enemy. I truly believe it is the most painful thing in the world. It takes what you care about most and convinces you that you want to completely corrupt, destroy, rape, harm, etc. them. It hurts so much. I’m praying someday I’ll get better but I may never know. I just hope by writing all of this people who feel like they’re alone will know that they are not. OCD is a monster, but it is possible to beat it.
    A Very Important Thing to Note: OCD attacks your values. It takes the most important things in a person's life or a person's moral compass and tries to manipulate it and twist it. My whole life the most important thing for me has been being kind to others. I also have wanted to be a teacher since I was seven years old, and family is extremely important to me. Hence, I have Pedophilia, Incest, and Racism OCD. Pure O OCD comes from a place of extreme self hatred and (usually) some type of trauma, so receiving therapy for that may also help.
    UPDATE 2/26/2022: Alright everyone!! I’m doing so much better. :,) I ended up getting IVIG treatment because of the discovery of me having PANS and it’s helped IMMENSELY. My Racism OCD is quickly fading away, along with the Incest OCD. I was finally able to have a conversation with my brother about my trauma with OCD and was able to apologize for allowing it to hurt our friendship. There are still hard days, but they’re so much rarer now. I’ll keep you all updated but as of right now, Im doing so much better. 🥹❤️

      I wanted to say that I relate to those OCDs so much. I just don’t know how to communicate it to get help. I’m so surprised others feel this way. I’m sorry you’ve had these thoughts and that they’ve clouded your mind for so long because I agree, I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. It makes me feel like a monster and a lonely one at that.     A common line I use to explain my intrusive thoughts in ocd is “imagine if your head never shut up? It just keeps annoying you with the same shitty things over and over again, imagine if this chatty terribly intrusive mind starts to control you and everything in your life, and you feel like you’d give anything for it to just, shut up. That’s ocd for me”

    I recently got diagnosed with OCD and my therapist said something really beautiful about it. She said that having OCD means that you feel responsible for your own thoughts more than other people and that's not a bad thing we just have to learn how to embrace it

    I have SERIOUS intrusive thoughts OCD. I was diagnosed early 2021. I am glad that this video mentioned it because I feel like people only pay attention to the checking and the symmetry types of OCD. thank you.

    I’ve had OCD ever since early childhood, I had always thought that I was strange or insane. When I finally discovered what OCD truly meant, I decided to see a doctor and was medically diagnosed. I have many mental illnesses but OCD is the one I despise the most, it’s torturous, my thoughts are constantly flying through my head and it is as if I have an endless list of tasks that have to do every single day. It is like a curse, in which the only escape is sleep.

      I don't have strong symptoms anymore but I showed many textbook signs of it from the ages of 11-16. I had no idea what was happening and my parents obviously didn't know what OCD was so I just got punished for compulsive behavior and told I belonged in an institution. I guess you could say I was scared sane.

      My family hates my OCD they always called anal and told me I was weird and they can’t stand me when I indulge in my compulsions around them despite them knowing that I can’t choose what or when something stresses me out. Once I see something that goes against my OCD I have to deal with it or I become physically I’ll and extremely agitated. They also make fun of me for being stressed by odd numbers and mismatch socks. And a few months ago I found out my dad used to go in my room and move my stuff around slight bits to see if I noticed and he thought it was hilarious how I always noticed my things were touched. At one point I believed my dolls were alive because they had moved from the positions they were previously in even though I hadn’t been over to them in several days. It didn’t help that I heard noises in the house at night while everyone was supposed to be asleep. The only time my family didn’t complain or make fun of my OCD is when it helped them, for example my organization skills and attention to detail when cleaning and straightening up our constantly messy Tupperware cabinet. I used to even help them reorganize their bedrooms rooms because they are all so messy. Eventually I started avoiding their bedrooms rooms completely because if I saw how messy they kept things I got stressed and wanted to clean it for them (emphasis on FOR them and not WITH them). I don’t trust anyone in my family to organize right so I don’t let people help

      I remember having the same exact feeling when my intrusive thoughts began. I thought I was some form of irrevocably f*cked up(pardon the language) but I found forums and went to counseling. And one of the biggest takeaways, as said in the video: our intrusive thoughts often counteract our values and that's why it's so devastating when it happens. But you're not alone! None of you are 💙💙💙

    You forgot one common thing: rituals. And if you don't do them "properly", nothing will go as planned, or something terrible will happen, and you just won't be able to think of anything else.

      I sure had the ritual ones. They would just repeat and repeat in my head, touching something the right way for so many times, or something bad was going to happen to me or my family. Then questioning if I did it right, and starting again. What a head trip.

      I think it's the variation of magical thinking. I had this kind of problem for a decade after a certain incident, my rituals consisting of turning light on and off, getting stuck on particular words when reading and having to read the entire sentence again and again, opening and closing doors, lids on pots, etc. If I didn't act accordingly I would fear something horrible happening. I'm much better now, but when I'm stressed or very tired it comes back until I manage to relax. I regret not looking for help when my symptoms were at their worst, I lost a lot of time just struggling with myself.

      @@lita2336 The reading thing made it impossible for me to get through books sometimes. I would dread starting a new one. I also used to write down quotes or words during movies; I'd rewind and watch five minutes over again because I felt I wasn't paying enough attention. I realized it would take me four hours to get through two hour movies. I only got over that because I realized in the movie theater, my mind drifts but I just keep watching and by the end, I can summarize the film so it isn't necessary to have absorbed everything perfectly.

      my rituals used to be so bad that the rest of my day would be ruined if i didn’t do them correctly, the biggest one was the order in which i put on my school uniform in the morning, it would genuinely ruin my good mood if i messed up the order

    It also happens with touching. For example, touching things with both hands, and if you happen to brush your arm you got to do it with your other arm to feel 'right' and not 'unbalanced'. This is my type of OCD and it could be a big distraction to daily activities.

      I have this OCD! But now it’s turning into doing any multiple/factors of 18 on each side/ whatever I touch as my OCD gets worse. I’ve always been looking for someone with this OCD and I have finally found someone! But theres also more to my OCD 😢

    I am in my 40s and have experienced OCD all my life. I can say that my ocd became less powerful and much less disturbing overtime. Have had a lot of cognitive behavioural therapy. I didn't accept any medication because of all the negative side effects and the chance of becoming addicted to it.
    What really helped me, is becoming aware that the EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT to these negative, compulsive thoughts, are the root cause of behaving obsessively and doing rituals to ward off bad things happening to us or our dear ones. They are ONLY THOUGHTS that our mind gives importance to and they aren't really happening in real life!
    It took me a while to accept this fact and that we don't have fully control over a lot of things in our life that causes suffering. The irony is that all those obsessive, compulsive rituals we do to prevent suffering, eventually give us so much more stress, thus constant suffering. Things, good or bad, happen in life, even if our mind tricks us to think we can ward it off.
    I don't take my ocd thoughts, in the moment they appear, too seriously anymore. By giving too much power to our 'ocd mind' it starts controlling us.
    My therapist once said:" Oberve your ocd thoughts with logic. Breathe and let them pass. Don't take them too seriously." I made this my mantra and it became a gamechanger for me!
    You are so much more than your thoughts. Hope you find peace in your mind🙏🏼!

      To share another helpful tool I use is imaginairy rescripting (google for more info).
      Due to the emotional load that we've attached to the negative thoughts, our mind reacts instantly to get rid of it.
      Now, try to do the following steps when your thoughts/emotions get triggered. Imagine that your inner child is feeling all these negative emotions. And your grown up self is the one who is going to help your inner child to calm down.
      1. Put your hands on your heart and ask yourself ' What do I (innerchild) feel right now? Am I sad, scared, angry?'
      2. 'What do I (innerchild) need right now?' A hug, a listening ear, etc. whatever comes up..
      3. Now bring your grown up compassionate self in the picture and see him/her help/talk/calm down your innerchild and imagine the most ideal feeling and situation you want it to become.
      You will notice that bit for bit your triggers/ emotions will get neutralized,
      because you are rewriting the scripts of these negative thought patterns.
      Try this as often as possible. At some point you will notice the differences. Sending love and healing🩷

      Sometimes it does get really annoying to hear some of the jokes about OCD (I do have OCD), so I really appreciate you for understanding rn - it can harm your mental health a lot, and as for me, it got even to my physical health, so yeah, I understand that the jokes are not malicious, but they always kind of bite me anyway

      I have severe OCD and it started when I was 7 that sprouted from a fear of god. Not knowing how to reach out if mental torture. It’s even worse when you genuinely have no clue what is wrong with you. My OCD wouldn’t have gotten this worse if I hadn’t had waited so long from such a young age.

    I was diagnosed with OCD since my teenage, spent my whole life fighting OCD. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

      I remember when I first started therapy my therapist loaned me a book with all types of OCD. I kept flipping the pages and going, "OMG! OTHERS FEEL THIS TOO?!" IT was so validating! I didn't realize how alone and strange I felt, to know it was actually a 'thing' and I wasn't broken. Hang in there, you are not alone! One of the weirdest forms I related to? (I suffered with at least five manifestations, maybe more) hit and run OCD. IT's when you think you have run over something or someone, and circle around over and over to check and make sure. I would get caught in this loop all the time. Making circles in the parking lot or on a road. Even though my eyes could 'see' there was no body, my brain and feelings kept saying I was missing it, and around and around I would go.

    As someone with diagnosed severe OCD, this is one of the better videos I’ve seen on OCD. There are many many ways OCD manifests but most people think it comes out as “germophobia or perfectionism.”
    It’s not just repeatedly washing your hands or having a repeated thought three times a day or needing everything neat.
    For the people who deal with OCD it is constant horrible torture. Please take it easy on your friends and loved ones with OCD.

      My one cousin called me a germaphobe after I said I got germ killer in my mouth, that’s how I knew my other cousin who knows me a bit better was 100% talking behind my back. Also have been teased for it by my father and cousins (also my mother but she somewhat understands how bad it is for me after seeing how hard it is for me so uh i’ll let her slide lol) And it doesn’t feel like they’re joking because it isn’t funny.       Lol, ADHD isn't even a lack of concentration. It's the inability to regulate concentration, which makes a lot of sense because OCD forces your concentration on stuff you likely don't want. Though you probably already know that :)
      Psychology is a goldmine for fake news honestly. So many people who don't understand it try to explain the human mind through their own, very limited knowledge about it. Basically having a lot of opinion on something they barely know anything about.

      It‘s a type of ADHD. The hyperactivity is usually internal (restless, chaotic thoughts; trouble to switch off thoughts; …). The main problem here is problems with attention, like constant daydreaming, being easily distractable, trouble to focus on anything that isn‘t interesting, …
      It‘s ADHD but not as obvious as the hyperactive type of ADHD. There are three types (Inattentive, hyperactive and combined).

      I identified a lot with the intrusive thoughts, and also there's a number compulsion which I do almost always, I always like to blink and touch my teeth against each other when I am looking at the numbers 2, 11, 20, 29, 38, 47, 56, 65, 74, 83, 92, 101, 110, and anything that equals number 2 if you count
      and I dislike odd numbers a lot, I can get a bit anxious when looking at them so I look away and try to imagine number 2 in my mind to get less stressed
      I talked too much💀

    They didn't even mention counting. This part drives me crazy. When pumping gas, I like the total cost to be 11.11 or 20.20. I refuse to pump gas from pump 13, etc. I have to take 11 or 12 steps when crossing a street. I can't step on a doorstep or crack when walking or entering somewhere. My shoes in closet cannot touch each other. It's aggravating and a lot of work to keep others from noticing.

      I think for me the checking can lead to counting. I check to see the door is closed and then have to touch the door knob 7 times then three times to feel better, start to walk away then think maybe I did it wrong and have to do the process over and over until I get that feeling of relief. I hate it when I have one of those.

    Also about symmetry: it's not just about symmetry around you. Also symmetry OF you. You need to feel symmetrical and balanced. If someone taps your shoulder, you might feel unbalanced and wrong until they (or you) tap another shoulder. I can't stand the feeling of one wet hand and one dry, for example, so if i take something out of the water, i put another hand in the water, too. I also know a guy who hates the feeling when someone passes by him from the left or right, so he always turns by 90 degrees, so this person would pass by his face.

      not this comment making me realize that my discomfort of that was actually just another manifestation of OCD. socks are the worst, i have gone through such a trial and error with socks because one will hug one foot slightly tighter than the other. and the tapping the shoulder, wow, thanks for sharing this or i would have never realized this!

      I don't think I have OCD, but I can empathize cause I really don't like having an "uneven" feeling with my feet so if I step on a crack for instance then I really want to step on one on the other foot in the same area. However if I'm really hustling to get somewhere and manage to not look down I'm fine. Heavens help me if I notice though I probably end up with a weird gait since things aren't measured according to my walk paths.

    I was diagnosed with OCD: intrusive thoughts and counting. The intrusive thoughts were really really bad and they made/make me feel ashamed and dirty. Something my therapist told me and has helped me is to acknowledge my intrusive thoughts. He said when I try to ignore or push my thoughts aside I feed into them and make them stronger. However, if I acknowledge them and let them know that I hear them over time they'll slow down or even stop altogether. He gave an example of someone knocking on the door cause they know you're inside and they want to come in. If you just ignore them and don't acknowledge them they're going to continue to knock on the door, possibly even start pounding on the door and/or yelling at you to open the door. However, if you simply acknowledge them and say you don't want any visitors they may not get the point right away, but eventually they leave. This analogy really really helped me and I use it to this day. Sometimes I even say out loud to myself "I hear you" when I start to get them and it really helps me.

    I’ve been struggling with OCD since I was a tiny kid. I began to notice it soon after I was diagnosed with ADHD. All my life I was told I struggled with just fear issues. But when I was about 10 years old I figured out that I had OCD after realizing it wasn’t normal to wash my hands up to my elbows frequently for minutes on end. I was so preoccupied by my health until I was about 17 and then it got a lot easier somehow, but I still struggled with background symptoms. When I was about 23 (I am 26 now) I had a horrible relapse that developed into other obsessions and it got easier after a couple years without fully going away, but I’ve relapsed hard and am currently amidst another obsession. I teared up watching some of this after finding out the idea of OCD attacking what is important to be true. It’s been a 26 year battle, but I’m finally seeking therapy. Wish me luck. 🤞🏻

    Im glad you put out this video for people with OCD to feel seen.
    I was diagnosed with Anxiety disorder and OCD. Quite conflicting ones.
    Anxiety fuels my need to be sure about things, while assurance sometimes triggers OCD worse. Im practicing the "maybe" when I ruminate on things. Sometimes it's hard, but I guess we just have to take baby steps and learn to be gracious to ourselves

    Those of us with OCD cannot prevent intrusive thoughts, but we CAN control how we react to them. My therapist recommended perceiving intrusive thoughts as a train running in circles in your mind. You can’t stop the train, but you CAN decide not to get on the train. Allow the train to run its course, and the obsession will pass. I generally find an obsession lingers for 3 days and leaves, as long as I don’t board the train! Hope that helps someone in this thread! 😊

    I dislike when people say they’re OCD because they like orderliness (non actual obsessively OCD) I have to pray 6 sets of 3 prayers before going to sleep because my mind tells me that otherwise my room will be invaded by demons and they will eat me.       I used to do something similar, I had thoughts that if I wouldn't pray before sleeping, something bad will happen the next day. Letting go of religion really helped with my OCD and anxiety.       Hey, I have the same consequence for a couple compulsions!! Mine make a little less sense though. If I don’t get far enough away from a flushing toilet or closing door, it’ll summon a demon that’ll eat me. And I sleep on the top of a bunk bed with a ladder, and if I step on any step except the second from the bottom, a demon hiding on the bottom bunk will grab my ankle, drag me through the ladder, and eat me.

      there’s this younger kid who hangs out with me and my friends and she’s sorta the type to act cool and sassy and self diagnose, she once said to incredibly (diagnosed) ocd friend that she must have ocd bc she has mental breakdown if her room isn’t clean. to which my friend came over to me who is also incredibly (diagnosed) ocd. it’s a compulsion not perfection disorder. now if she was have mental breakdowns over the process of cleaning the room and rearranging things every second i’d understand but just being annoyed by a messy room isn’t ocd i hate it

    I haven't been clinically diagnosed with OCD but I burst into to tears when I watched this because of how well it describes my mindset. It is something that shows up in the small things but you know what they say, the devil is in the details. It is so much worse than you would think to constantly doubt what you should know. I am 13 and I have been struggling with this for as long as I can remember.

      I think it's worth seeking professional evaluation.
      I also got emotional but it's because I know I have it but due to medication dulling that emotion, I sometimes forget how miserable I was when it was most intense. But it's no joke.
      Therapy can work if you don't wanna be on medication. But either way, you should definitely talk to someone soon. I'm 10 years older than you and from this old geezer's perspective, I should've sought help when I was your age. It would've saved me a lot of grief

      I’m 13 too, and I’m almost 100% sure I have OCD. One example of an obsession is making a comment with 99 likes into 100, or 34 into 35. It’s weird but it feels like it’s better when it’s even. I can’t help it. And I almost have an anger attack if someone says things like "calm down". I can’t calm down I’m sorry but that just makes me more stressed.
      Not to mention the fact my dad has it too, he also kind of struggles with it.

      Same, I haven't been diagnosed with OCD but I have almost every single symptoms that this video shows (That also includes counting which is not included) but I don't think that my mom would let me seek for help because when I tried to explained to her she said it's just a phase so I'm basically stuck. But if you can, try seeking for help!

    I was diagnosed with OCD maybe 3 to 4 years ago, I continue to learn and battle it as I get older. My type of OCD that I have are more of the intrusive thoughts, I continue to have them but I always remind myself of the words my therapist and supporters let me know and gives me courage to stay strong as I label them as intrusive thoughts and not something part of me.

    I don’t really suffer with the symmetry thing so I thought for ages I couldn’t have ocd. But my psychiatrist has diagnosed me recently and it honestly makes sense. I suffer with the other three ocd behaviour things on varying levels. For me I suffer more with morality based obsessions. I am constantly stuck thinking about whether I am good or evil despite the fact that I am a pretty good person I think. I constantly have thoughts like “you’re a monster” and am always needing to ask my family if they love me or think I deserve to live. I know the answer, but I need to hear them say it to make the thoughts go away.
    Anyways just wanted to say this vid was pretty on point for me. Even if you don’t meet all those types it doesn’t mean you don’t have ocd guys. If you are suffering then see a professional because you deserve to start your journey to work through this.

    My therapist told me that I may have mild OCD, and it confused the heck outta me. Hearing the first type of OCD clicked, and now I totally understand. It's sad that people only really associate OCD with the last two because of modern media. The others are just as frustrating and debilitating

      Same. I really like things to be clean and orderly, to the point where I can't think (and I become agitated) when my space is cluttered or disorganized. Because of that, people always JOKED that I have OCD. In reality, just this past year, I had a psychiatrist tell me I'm "somewhere on the OCD spectrum".... which was confusing because that's not what I went to see him for. Learning more about it has made me realize that - yeah - the shoe fits. Especially the ruminating thoughts, obsessive checking, and feelings of contamination.

      I have a friend who is undiagnosed OCD and they will tell me the not so popular symptoms they are having and I just have to keep telling them "u have ocd, this is a symptom of ocd" and they don't realise it because it's not the "clean freak" standard most think of when it comes to ocd

      For real. For me, the two biggest things are contamination and counting, but the intrusive thoughts are by far the worst - though thankfully I don't get them very often. Germs I can deal with by just washing things, counting I can deal with by counting, but if there's an intrusive thought stuck in my head on a loop it's insanely difficult to get it out. I've found reading can help (provided the thought doesn't succeed in drowning out what I'm reading,) but if that fails my only options where singing/humming and tapping to try and drown it out, or stabbing myself with my fingernails because physical pain never fails to disrupt the loop - though that's always the last resort becuase it hurts. Most of the time I don't get them, but I sometimes get spells where it happens regularly for a while before going away again - the longest of which happened in jr high, so I blame puberty for it. Usually there's a trigger where something repeatedly reminds me of the subject matter that the thoughts revolve around, so I generally avoid things that might trigger it just in case. I'm actually on the tail end of intrusive thoughts spell right now, but I recently discovered that mentally repeating one specific short prayer seems to be able to disrupt it - which is odd, because I'm not even a particularly religious person, but if it works it works. (Though unfortunately my counting tendencies are starting to leech into it, as my brain now thinks it's better to repeat it exactly three times rather than just once...)

      Same here, I used to wash my hands a lot (A LOT LOT, it was painful), but I got better, so now I can touch most things (school stuff is still a no no for me tho, I have to wash my hands after touching for example my notebooks, pencil case, school bag etc., and it's really hard to deal with).

    Thank you for highlighting OCD in such an accurate and educational way. I got diagnosed 2 years ago I have 3 out of the 4 types mentioned in this video. It's very exhausting at times I get so lost in my mind that I feel trapped in a continuous thought loop. I go through days where I just sleep because I'm so tired. I went to therapy to help manage it. I personally recommend doing this it certainly helped me gain some control. If you have OCD remember your not alone and it doesn't make you a bad person.     I have not been diagnosed, and I am not self-diagnosing but this is just my thoughts on the topic. I’ve always guessed that I may have OCD, since I heavily relate to practically everything I’ve read, watched, seen about the disorder. But what seriously took me by surprise with this video was the contamination part. It described me exactly, I’m constantly washing my hands to the point that it’s weird to people around me. It’s an actual issue for me, since I will literally wash my hands after putting down the toaster, or opening/closing the microwave, or literally just touching anything that doesn’t belong to me or that I feel is dirty. For the longest time I seriously thought that was just something stupid that I do, since my friends have made a joke out of it. My mum is always acting like something is wrong with me, and will yell at me saying things like, “do I need to take you to a doctor?!”. It has seriously affected how I live, and sometimes affects the people around me, which honestly breaks my heart to know. I have considered talking to my mum to actually take me to talk to a therapist or doctor, but I struggle a lot in building courage to do that, even though there’s seriously nothing for me to be embarrassed of. Please reply if you’ve experienced something similar to me, I really need advice 😅

      I have experienced that. I'm fully grown with children of my own and it's a huge struggle for me when they get sick ( germs). I " decontaminate" the entire house and everything they have touched , multiple times a day. If I see that they have touched it, it gets cleaned immediately. Mine started when I was really young. I deemed everyone except my one ( favorite) cousin had " cooties". I was, as far back as I can recall, I was always clean, neat and orderly. I cleaned for fun and relaxation ( still do). Even at other people's houses ( mostly family). I never got into extreme excessive hand washing or anything and I'm not diagnosed but I definitely see many OCD traits in myself. There's more to mine but Im not going to share them with you for fear of planting seeds ( other thoughts) in your mind and make any of your current issues worse.Talk to your mum and tell her that since she offered to take you to the doctor about it, you decided that it's probably a good idea.       My experience was just about identical. I was basically scared sane by my parents ridiculing and punishing me for behaviors that were very much obsessive compulsive but we were too poor for a doctor. By 17, I had the thoughts under control. I learned to reset them. I still have certain urges but now I simply tell the impossible tasks "nope" when they show up.

    I have recently been diagnosed with OCD and now that I know what I have, it makes so much sense, the things I've been experiencing for most part of my life. My compulsions have changed over the year, from being more physical to more mental, to becoming physical in a noticeable way that I can't overlook. Such as accidentally hitting something or myself against a surface, so I repeat that to understand how much damage I had caused, it's a loop and by the end of it I feel horrible, or staring at a new belonging for a long time to see if there's any defect. I've bailed on all potential romantic relationship because of overanalyzing my feelings and now I finally understand why was it so uncontrollable for me. Cannot even begin on explain how much I ruminate or live in my head these past few months, it's a loop that's hard to get out of. It's a painful experience to live with OCD. I cannot wait to recover. And others suffering too, I hope you recover soon! ♥️

    I heavily relate to the first and second ones. Sometimes it can be hard for me to be productive (especially at night, which is sad since I’m a night owl) because I’m constantly worrying about either huge things like nuclear war (yes I worry about that lot), or tiny things, like whether I remembered to put a period at the end of my text to my friend and if they’ll be angry at me.

      Yes, I can relate. There are times I haven't communicated at all in fear of wording things wrong especially after being told sometimes I'm not clear enough. 😐
      When I was a child my mom watched a documentary about the Nostradamus predictions. For YEARS I worried about nuclear war, cannibalism and CA falling into the ocean. Then, my grandparents had cataract surgery and I began obsessing about that. I was 8-10 years old at these times. I'm 46 now. I wish they had the info then we have now.

      I have the same problem haha. I love the night time, it's so pleasant and calming... but it's also so anxiety inducing and I end up zoning out in rumination holes. Sometimes they're benign, but usually they involve a natural disaster (tsunami and earthquake being the most possible here) and I have to check a glass of water to make sure the ground isn't shaking and it's just me... sometimes multiple times because I'm convinced I'm not seeing it right.
      Even typing out the words tsunami and earthquake, I feel like I upped the chances of it happening. Logically I know that's impossible. But I still feel that waaaay.

It was serious talk around my elementary school, and my parents played the film 2012 in the living room and I watched most of it when I was 10... I was convinced it was going to happen. My fear of a sudden global collapse/end ended in 2012 when nothing happened and we were fine...
      But the fear of catastrophic events suddenly wiping me and everyone/everything I love out persists to this day! Constantly! Even thinking about it makes me feel guilty and like I'm going to cause it, even though I know I can't do that lol.

    I have OCD and have a few of these, but one thing I'd like to note is fear of contamination can also manifest in the fear of contaminating others. Sometimes I'm afraid to even sit on furniture in other people's houses for fear of contaminating them. OCD can take so many different forms, even beyond whats in this video. Don't forget that when someone who has OCD has symptoms that aren't typical. It doesn't mean their experience is not vald.

    As someone who’s been diagnosed with OCD, it feels really nice to watch this honestly. I relate to the first one a lot! I OBSESS about relationships and love... and it’s really hard not to. I’m always wanting to find a relationship and also used to have a lot of intrusive sexual thoughts... I’m a little better now, but I know everything is still in the back of my head alllll the time! I do have therapy though! Anyways, yeah... OCD is pretty stressful and I feel awful for the people who may have it worse... just know you’re valid if you do! And you will be okay!

    Symmetry hit hard when you talked about the feeling of it. It’s not often, but when I organize what I’m doing to stay focused, I always have to put everything back the the exact right spot or else I will get distracted by it. Whenever I’m walking I have to go line up my feet with whatever object I can see, sometimes multiple, and it has to feel like both feet walk along the object symmetrically. I focus on this while walking so I constantly miss things I should notice and constantly get comments or questions about the way I walk.

    I have intrusive thoughts about my religious beliefs. I've even went to confession and talked to a priest about it and my poor husband is constantly having to reassure me about where I'm going after I pass away.       Go to the Lord and confess not to a priest. Have you tried prayer and fasting for deliverance? Ask God to show you what’s going on with you you might be surprised if it’s a demonic attack in nature. Jesus said some things won’t go without prayer and fasting. Keep up the good Fight 💪🏼 💕❤️

    As someone with OCD I hate when people just assume it's being clean and organized. My OCD manifests in several ways, but the most severe being emetophobia (an irrational fear or vomiting or vomit). It plagues my mind almost every minute of every day, and going out in public is sometimes unbearable. I have given myself many hard scratch marks or bruises from self-harm that occurred during a panic attack because of this fear. Thank you for bringing so much light to this still misunderstood disorder, you guys are great :)

      I went to a counsellor with my Dad, and we took a shortcut so no one would know where we were going.
      I can't believe that my Dad is embarrassed about this.

    Thank you for educating! I have OCD myself. I have really bad intrusive thoughts, including violent, taboo, pedophila, etc. Its terrible, It’s unbelievable how people think that it is perfectionism. It’s not good to have, its extremely painful. I haft to go through day to day situations, talking to my friends and thinking TERRIBLE thoughts. Thank you so much for educating people about this.. they need to learn more about OCD.

    Ocd is a beast of its own, manifesting in so many ways! And often it goes unnoticed, especially if it's all internal. I have the first two as well as an obsessive nail picking habit and perfectionism. When ocd is thoughts and rumination, it's difficult to address and be aware of. Mindfulness is key. Be kind to yourself. ♡ It will come and go and learning to manage ocd will help keep you from getting sucked into negativity and anxiety.

    This video felt like a mental hug, and these comments make me feel warm and I honestly wanna cry. I’ve lived with OCD my whole life, never diagnosed but discovered last year that’s what it was while I was trauma processing, and also my mom has dealt with it her whole life. It’s been debilitating. Unexplainable at times. THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT SEXUAL ORIENTATION OCD. That has been a big one for me that’s related to trauma. We need the world to be aware of this. I don’t think the percent of people struggling is as low as it is, I think people just aren’t educated or hide it because of shame. Thank you.

    iv had ocd for around 5 years since when i was about 7, recently it’s got worse because my intrusive thoughts have gotten really bad and because of that my anxiety has gone 📈 and my rituals have also gone 📈, it takes up hours of my day doing all of these stupid rituals. ocd is not a joke, thank you for spreading awareness:)

    I finally convinced my mom to get me a therapist because of my intrusive thoughts! I might not have OCD, but it’s still nice to learn about it when there’s even a minimal chance

      How did you convince her? One time I tried to tell my parents that I have a mental illness but all I got is a smack on the head cuz they didn't believe me and my ocd have been getting worst these days-

      @@Amityblightlumity22 I recommend boiling it down to the simplest you can! For example, instead of talking about a mental illness, talk about the symptoms that bother you! If they don’t listen to that, People are always open to talk on the internet. There are some chat rooms that could possibly help!

    Thank you for representing all of the different sides! For example I have OCD but my room is extremely messy, yes it's completely possible because my mess is "organised" in a way and if I change my mess i think something bad will happen or something I am attached to positively will change ect. I definitely identify with the intrusive thoughts and ruminations aspects of OCD

    Videos like these are so important cause they explain beyond the stereotypes of a disorder. I relate to some of these manifestations of OCD but not to others, cause not all OCDs are the same. And sometimes people don’t understand that.

    I've been 95% sure I have OCD for the last 2 years. I even spoke to my mum about it a while back and she mentioned things she'd noticed I'd been doing my whole life that she'd thought could be something like OCD, to the point where we both now think I have it - but of course, I'm not diagnosed, so I can't get any help for it, or even validation or an official label for what I'm probably dealing with.
    The only part I don't relate to & never have is the whole fear of contamination thing. That's never been an issue for me - like, sometimes I'll worry a little, but it's nothing significant or out of the ordinary - whereas the rituals? The intrusive thoughts? The compulsions? The constant uncertainty and checking things over and over and over? That all massively affects me, daily. The sentence "it's about the feeling" perfectly sums up how it is for me. Nothing is good enough to leave unless it feels "right."
    Also, does anyone else do that thing where if you accidentally hit your hand on something, you have to hit the other one in the exact same way to balance it out, or else everything just feels kinda messed up for the rest of the day? Or if you step too forcefully and your shoe makes a much louder sound so you have to double-hop on the other foot to fix it? Or is that just me????

      ive also been pretty confident ive had ocd for about 2 years at this point with literally the same things you described including the last thing you said. at a certain point the last thing got so bad because if i accidentally hit any part of my body i would have to touch the rest of my body and then my mind would tell me that i have to redo it because i thought i hit something twice and it was just an infinite loop.
      did you ever see a professional about it? if so, did you or did you not have ocd? was it something else? mainly asking because judging off the little info you gave i would probably have the same results as you. that last thing tho makes me feel seen 😂i thought i was insane

      Yes. I do this. It manifests differently in different people. Some may fear germs, some may ritalualize , some may check ect. Or do all. Don't doubt yourself. Good luck.

    I wish I knew this video exists when I was younger - it’s nice to see how many people understand what I was going through. I only wish that I could’ve found this sooner because when I was in the worst period of my OCD, the people around me didn’t know how to deal with it and in some ways made it worse - only leading me to believe that I was the only one dealing with these problems and making me feel like a burden to my friends and family. Now I’m crying just watching this video + reading these comments, seeing all the people who do understand and all the people offering support.

    Having OCD can be horrible. I was diagnosed after having my first child. I thought I had post partum depression, but after seeing a psychologist and doing a checklist…realising I’ve been feeling this way almost as long as I can remember, to the point of being incredible distressed and hyper fixated on not wanting to die at the age of 5. that feeling…that feeling when you FINALLY understand 🥹…I started to be able to manage it and I’m so much better now.

    This video is really good at raising awareness. I've been effectively diagnosed with OCD at the age of 16, but I remember dealing with the disorder's struggles ever since the age of 6 to 7. Because it took a long while to properly identify the illness, it's become really severe and even with the treatments I follow regularly, I'll always live with it. However, I can educate myself and others around me!

    The worst part of OCD (at least for me) are the constant intrusive thoughts and the feeling that I have no control over my thoughts. It honestly hurts so much to hear people say “oh everyone has OCD and checks if the door is closed”. Just today an insurance guy told me I couldn’t get some type of insurance because of my OCD and anxiety-disorder and continued saying things like “well my wife probably has OCD as well, she always puts my clothes away” and “oh well that’s surprising that you have OCD, so you wash your hands all the time?”.
    People think that’s all that OCD is about and use it to make jokes but it minimizes the illness and makes people who are affected by it feel like they’re not taken seriously.
    Added: You can’t always SEE that someone struggles with their mental health. My doctor once said “you think it’s psychosomatic? What problems do you have? You don’t look like you have a mental illness” and that’s not okay for a doctor to say - for no-one actually. SO you should always be careful what you’re saying to other people because you never know their whole backstory.

      You're totally right! As a Pure O OCD person, I can totally confirm that sometimes, people cannot see the compulsions,but that doesn't mean they aren't there. It gets worse when they start to doubt it :(

      Agreed. I’ve been able to accept and live with my intrusive thoughts and it’s gotten a lot better over the pass months. Whenever I told someone I had OCD they would say the exact same thing like “oh I always feel like washing my hands” and saying that it’s not that bad. People who haven’t experienced something wouldn’t get what your talking about and it’s just tough.

    Lately I've been struggling a lot with my mental health, I thought if I could analyse the situation and think logically about I would be able to feel better but the more I try to understand my feelings the more complex they get and my actions become more abstract. I think ocd mixed with trauma was the beginning of problems that thanks to a lot of factors I have no way I'm aware of to solve

    I’m so happy you made this video because OCD is so misunderstood! I was diagnosed with OCD about 10 years ago, and recently when I got bad with it again I actually started to convince myself I didn’t have ocd anymore, and it was actually something else wrong with me because it’s so misunderstood. I literally have OCD and I don’t even understand it myself so this video is actually really helpful and I’m going to show it to my friends and family next time they ask me about it ❤️

      before i got diagnosed with OCD I thought I was schizophrenic lol. OCD is a very intense diagnosis and super misunderstood. i'm glad you found a video that helped!

    Just by watching this I know i have ocd now. I have symptoms to all of the types but the one that hit the most was the last one. It hit so hard that I started crying because I've been looking so long for what was possibly wrong with me, and I think I found it. It just so weird how when you explained it, it was like you were in my head. I'm gonna make an appointment with my doctor tomorrow to just make sure.

    I was so happy to hear mental contamination included in this video! When I was first diagnosed as a kid, this subtype wasn't yet recognized which made me feel so alone for having a 'weird' kind of OCD that no one had really seen before. Before this video, I've only seen handful of other sources even mention it though it's often called by different names like "emotional contamination" or "metaphysical contamination." Thanks so much, keep up the great work :)

    i always assumed i had OCD and that it was minor throughout my whole life, but literally every single thing that was talked about in this video lined up with things i do on a daily basis but this video also gave me some peace of mind. it lets me know that i’m not crazy or paranoid but rather it confirmed my suspicions and i need to find a way to cope with this truth.

    I have to say really, really big thank you for this video. I do have OCD, and I've been dealing with it for several years now (and sadly, I have parts of every single type - it's not as bad as it used to be, so at least that's good), and to be honest, I'm really tired of people being like "oh my god, why don't you just stop, it's not hard", "why are you such a perfectionist, it's pointless", "stop washing your hands" etc. I'm really glad that Psych2Go makes these videos, because it helps me understand myself better, and I'm glad that this video spreads the word about this mental illness specifically - I've been waiting for another video about OCD, because it can be as awful as any other mental illness (some people still think it's just "perfectionism", and that it's easy - it obviously is not).

    Definitely relate to checking and contamination. They both go hand in hand sometimes, like when I check and scrutinize any meat I have for it being undercooked, and if it is, I'll obsess and check that part to try to reassure myself. The worst part is, once that fear goes away, another one pops up and it's the same process

      Yep I too have food Bourne illness checking and fears!!! I obsess over making sure I’ve cleaned to prevent illness from bloody meat. I’m terrified of throwing up and it’s horrific to me to think of food poisoning. Or I back away from people with the flu and start thinking I’m not feeling well.

    I have ADHD but I relate to having anxiety about worrying if I actually did something or not. For example, I might not be able to remember if I took my medication today or if I'm remembering yesterday. Or I might not be able to tell if I did a chore or simply thought of doing a chore. I always feel like I'm forgetting something. The difference is that if I point my attention elsewhere I will forget about the thing and it disappears completely, where as someone with OCD wouldn't be able to stop thinking if it. I'm just left with a lingering feeling of anxiety that I try to soothe with self comforting as skills.

      You are not alone, I'm here and you just made me feel that i'm not alone in those things! I'm learning more about myself since i kinda 'shutdown' (basically stopped functioning) in 2020 and so i have ADHD and suspect that OCD may explain some things as well.
      The forgetting is awful. I have a little paper on which I write the day and the dose each time I take my meds (+the start of a new box/strip!) so even if i'm unsure whether I noted it down, i can count back :) Writing down things helps & gives some relief because then it's not up to our brains to try sooo hard to hold onto everything but instead it's the paper that holds onto it. External memory! if something doesn't work, we don't have to put so much effort in trying to make it work. we work differently / around it :)
