  • The photogenic Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris) is found right around the Australian coast. With a population of just 7000 birds, spread along Australia's 37,000 km of shoreline, they favour ocean and estuary beaches, with a secondary preference for rocky shorelines.
Pied Oystercatchers co-exist with the closely related Sooty Oystercatcher (Haematosus fuliginous) which prefer rocky shorelines.

Very informative, can't say that I have ever seen the bird but did enjoy the commentary.

Pied Oystercatchers are indeed hard to see, whereas Sooties are often spotted near Batemans Bay and nearby coastline. Until a few months ago I'd only spotted them briefly, on the Moruya River estuary, but a pair are now resident within a kilometre of Batemans Bay town centre. These are the two see actually catching oysters. This may actually be the same pair seen in the video at Durras.
