Einstein reacting to a collar for the first time

  • Einstein developed dermatitis under his wing, so we had to put a collar on him to prevent him from aggravating the wound. It was his first time wearing a collar, and the process of putting it on wasn't smooth. There was a lot of growling, struggling, and flailing as he tried to adjust to it. I began recording after he calmed down a bit. This was not easy for Jeff or me to do emotionally, but we want what is best for Einstein.
    🐦
    Einstein Parrot is a very talkative African Grey Parrot! He lives with us in our home in Texas and was hatched on June 15, 1997. Einstein is a silly, smart, and popular parrot who loves to talk and entertain! (He is NOT the "Einstein" that was featured on the TV show Animal Planet.)

    Hi Marcia, please try to find an older video of Symon the African grey parrot. She had a fabulous PONCHO. It was soft, seem to be tee shirt fabric. She doesn't wear it anymore because she has stopped plucking. It didn't seem to bother her at all. I'm sure it would suit Einstein better. I don't think it had any snaps or velcro.

    When I was rehabbing Tonka for 4 years we had to go the collar route for awhile and it was extremely sad and difficult. He couldn’t eat his food and he had no way to use his feet to play with toys or anything. Needless to say we tried. I had to remove the collar and let Tonka be Tonka. I had to put all my faith in God and Tonka. Extra misting with aloe water helped him greatly. Tonka was sooooo stressed and it’s not ok. It’s not natural and it basically paralyzes them. They are no more independent. I’m sorry I have to see this. Please get another opinion… this is torture for him.

    • @patchdavis35
      @patchdavis35 Před 20 dny +2

      No, it's definitely NOT okay! Poor Einey. When my 18 year-old Grey began to pluck his feathers it truly broke my heart. It was all I could think about all day. You feel so helpless, wanting them to be happy.

    • @hoppincin
      @hoppincin Před 19 dny

      Please don’t make him wear the collar he will. Get very depressed. Imagine in someone cut your arms off and you couldn’t put your arm to your mouth to feed yourself. They can’t climb they can’t do anything. I hope you realize after trying it’s not a positive thing. I know u love him and only want to help but this isn’t the way. You got to let go and let GOD with this one.

    Don't know if it'll help, but can you install the snaps on the underside? Also, put sew some velcro strips on just for him to chew on- not as closures, and if he has a favorite chew item, sew a loop or something to hold that item on so'he can chew that. Perhaps giving him purposeful things to chew on and play with will help him adjust and see it more as a toy to wear rather than a nuisance to remove.
    I hope he heals well and learns to leave himself alone. It's hard. Best of luck!
