What species of tortoise makes the best pet? You may be surprised to learn that it isn’t the most common species of all like sulcata tortoises, leopard tortoises, red foot tortoises or even Russian tortoises. In fact, it’s really an animal that is actually endangered. The western Hermann’s tortoise is tough to beat. It has looks, charisma, a bold personality, hardiness and it’s small too. It’s size alone makes it much easier to house long term for most people. In the end, it’s really up to YOU as to what is the best choice for your situation and as long as you can appropriately provide for it, any tortoise species can make a great pet. But, I have to say that in more than 30 years and after keeping every species of tortoise that’s legal to own, I find the western Hermann’s tortoise to be the BEST. Learn about the BEST PET TORTOISE right now.

I love the mention of your Italian relatives keeping tortoises in their yard. How wonderful to have a whole extended family practicing fantastic animal husbandry together !!
Thanks Mars!
All 5 of my eastern Herman's survived a couple of nights at 7 degrees this past winter. I have 2 females that are well over 15 yrs old and they are huge. Over 10 inches long and 8 inches wide. I got them from my nephew who raised them both from hatchling.
Awesome!
I’m not even sure how I found your channel, but I cannot get enough of your videos! They are so interesting and you do such a great job of presenting information about these gorgeous creatures! Plus I could watch them eat all day long😂
Thank you Jen!!!!
I love this channel as a young veterinarian it thrills me to see such passion and love for these guys.Does anyone here also watch tiptoe the salcata tortoise 🐢? He's amazing but this channel for education can not be beat and dare I say Otis stole my heart, I just wanna give him a little boop 💕
Well we’re honored to have a veterinarian watch us! ❤️
@@GardenStateTortoise honor is all mine guys!
We watch Tiptoe, he's awesome but Chris and Casey's videos are our favorite. We have an approximately 2.5 year old (we think) Redfoot Tortoise and she's already pretty big. We've learned alot about her care from their videos
You never disappoint. Your videos are full of education, done in such an interesting and entertaining way!!🐢❤️🐢
Thank you as always lori!
@@GardenStateTortoise can you give me tips for my star tortoise, including it's diet
I still have mine since I was 16. I'm 36 now!
Wow nice!
Hey y’all,

We’re so glad the hear that, thank you!!

🤣🤣
I think turtles, tortoises & terrapins have the loveliest, most soulful eyes 👀 Thanks, Garden State Tortoise, for my bi-weekly fix 🐢
Agree! Thanks Gaia!
They are such beautiful, sturdy, and engaging tortoises. Watching them wake up to Spring is pure joy, they are moving fast and looking for that food. Thank you for devoting this time to explain the upside to keeping them. Happy Spring to you and yours.🖤🇨🇦
I just got a Greek tortoise just about a month ago. It is my first tortoise, not my first reptile thought. I have 15 ball pythons one super dwarf retic, bearded dragon, leopard gecko and two painted turtles both rescues. When I knew I was going to be buying my tortoise I came straight to CZcams and found your channel. I subscribed and watch almost every video. Your information has been super helpful. Thank you for what you do. Cheers my friend.
Just discovered this channel and i'm obsessed with these videos. Its just amazing.
Chris,
Really appreciate your informations provided, they are very useful. You have done a great job on these tortoise and turtles !! Obviously we can see that you treat them with care and love ❤❤❤
I love the education and information you give. Thank you for caring so much about the welfare of the animals kept as pets. Your videos could save someone a lot of stress or an animal's life by helping people determine what is best for their lifestyle. I worked at a pets store years ago and it could be so disappointing at times. I'm so glad there are more resources available for reptiles now.
I love your Brian strong shirt! I have mine on today too! Thank you for all of your reptile knowledge!!!!
You make turtle education SO fascinating and SO much fun!!!
Thank you Rebecca!
Wow! Such a huge difference from dusty to clean! Beautiful!
Love your videos almost as much as I love 🐢, also really liked the BrianStrong t-shirt❤

Hey, Garden State Tortoise! Is your logo a Western Herman’s Tortoise??
@@GaiaCarney it is!
Do you happen to sell them or know someone that does I would like 5 2 males and 3 females
@@samuelsockriter3817 he is more of a Sanctuary if I remember correctly.
The red footed tortie. Hands down. Mine is over 20 yrs old and a puppy in a shell
Red foots are definitely a cool species! We’ve got a lot of them here.
Your enthusiasm is contagious 💗
Another informative video. ❤ Hermanni Hermanni. Keep a group and successfully breed them
Awesome video. They are definitely very cute tortoises.
Hey friends! We did another video like this one but it’s about the world’s best pet TURTLE! Check it out at this link: czcams.com/video/dPy0bODBkB0/video.html

Thank you for this info.
They’re gorgeous! But I’m partial to the eastern since that’s what we have. Only been 5 days but I’m in love. He’s now comfortable with us and his personality is coming out more each day.
bro thank you so much i cant begin to explain how helpful
Thanks for this video! My wife and I want a tortoise (or two), and have been doing research on which ones to get. The Western Herman’s tortoise looks like a great fit. Plus, they’re so cute! I would love to help contribute to the conservation effort of such a beautiful and personable species.
You can’t go wrong with them!
You've taught me so much about turtles , another great video, thank you
Thank you for watching Deborah!
- I love your channel. Thanks for sharing && loving all animals. 🐢 🐍 🦎
Thank you!!!
One of my most favourite tortoises ! 🤩
Same!!
I love these videos and love the fact that you guys are local to me. I will be setting up an outdoor Hermanns pen next year and I thought you guys had a video up on a proper outdoor pen? If so can you post the link? Thank you so much!
OK, 5:30 kinda answered my question. Ty for all the info!
This is amazing! Loving the herpetarium!
Thanks!
Thanks for the advice
I agree - Hermann’s are the best…but I’m biased since we live with a juvenile Eastern! 😂 We have an indoor & outdoor enclosure for Fermi, we live in Nottingham (England) so he needs both 🐢 Another awesome video! 💚
Hahah awesome Cheryl!
Spring approaches
"UNLEASH THE TORTOISES!"
*blows into conch shell*
🤣🤣🤣🐢
love your enthusiasm
Thank you 🙏🏻
Awesome content as always. Love your shirt too by the way. If I could pick one exotic reptile I could keep legally in Australia it would be a tortoise. After this video it would be a Herman’s Tortoise. Cheers from down under
Thanks Ian!!
They sure do clean up nicely!
I actually beiefly entertained the thought of a tortoise pet/friend.
Best to watch your videos- for interest and information.
Enjoy your channel very much.
Thanks Katie!
Love your shirt! Reptile army!!
Love ❤️ the little torts there soo cute 🐢🐢thankyou for the advice about coco coir and about no heat at night it worked thankyou 🐢🐢🐢
Great!! Thanks for watching.
I agree with you and Herman tortoise shells look unique
Chris, your passion for this species shines through. Is there a particular locale of Thh that is more cold hardy than the others?
My fiance and I have a Russian and Hermann's at home. Love them both and really interesting seeing the difference in personalities
Both amazing species thanks for sharing Jack!
Always love your videos!!! ❤️ But really lovin' your shirt!!! 💜 I got one too!!! I found Brian's channel because of you, and I love you BOTH!!! 💯 #BrianStrong
Thanks Mel! #BrianStrong
Man, i love your videos on turtles and tortoise. I have learn a lot. Thinking of getting a mud tortoise because i already have a 1 year western hermann tortoise. I just want to know if there's a turtle that will stay really small.
it's so nice to tune in after class :) what do you think about cherry heads? i would love to see an in-depth video on them! saying hi to your family of humans and reptiles
I love them! We should def do one. Hi back to ya!
Love your videos... I have become obsessed with Tortoises and Box Turtles! We recently acquired a Red Foot from a friend who no longer could care for "her". Do you have any videos specific for the care of Red Foots?
If I could find one that was 50+ yrs old that needed a new home, I'd jump on that deal so fast! Such amazing animals ❤
So true!
Wonderful video!! 💜
This video made me think about my tortoise being alone. I've housed my Russian tortoise alone for the past 10 years. I frequently interact with her and take her out for play time in her room or in the yard. Is it best for her to be kept alone, or with another Russian? I always read they are loners. But I trust your advice and expertise above anything I've ever read! Thank you guys! 💕🐢
Those toad ranch enclosures are beautiful. I got this sleek black one from Penn plax but im kinda wishing I knew about these instead.
I've seen this video plenty of times but I'm back for some spring vibes. Weather is horrible in Wales
Thanks. I might be looking to get one of these beautiful tortoises. We keep a Sonoran desert tortoise about a month in the summers for the desert botanical garden. I love him, his name is blue and he is delightful. But he takes the whole yard and does get into mischief. And he is an escape artist. If I could create him a pen from one of my garden beds that would be much easier on me, lol.
Completely agree, I absolutely love western Hermann’s. So full of character, so inquisitive, complete lemmings and their shells are so beautiful especially their keyhole scutes. My Pebble is hilarious and always up to mischief, he acts very much Otis - he loves chasing me around like a puppy. 🤗🐢🤗 I love the #brianstrong tshirt 👌🏻
That’s great! Thanks for watching and yes, #BrianStrong
Western Hermann's are definitely on my list for a dream species to keep to increase their captive numbers and keep the bloodlines pure. Hopefully I can find a sweet deal on some soon.
I’m sure you’ll be able to 😉
Brilliant. I enjoyed this very much. Do you sell Hermann's Tortoises as well?
They are expensive. Eastern Herman's tortoise the second best? Thank you, great video.
Love your videos! Always have been a huge fan or tortoises ever since my third grade teacher had them and would bring them in. My only question for you is if someone is looking to become a tortoise owner who are some credible breeders?
I'm watching this wearing my purple Reptile Army hoodie 😁 I have a pair of Russians, but these guys are super cool too. I can't believe they are endangered! I hope enough people are breeding them. Great video! I learned a lot.
That’s awesome heather! #BrianStrong
Awww..aren't Russies the best? I absolutely adore my girl!!!
What are your two torties' names? What are their personalities like?
The exact video i was looking for
AWESOME!
@@GardenStateTortoise hey man! Would an 8 foot by 2 foot turtle table be sufficient for these guys indoors? Enough for 1 male and 2 females?
Wonderful video
Thank you!
Thank you for this. I love my box turtles but it would be nice to keep a colony of tortoises. You've given me some ideas I want to research more about
Thank you.
Thank you 🙏🏻
You recommended repitsoil and there are ROCKS in it!!! I just found mounds of rocks in my sulcatas poop!
Thank you! Great video!!! I am still waiting for a video about greek tortoises subspecies, locales 😉😁👍👍👍👍👍
Oh boy, that one’s gonna take loooooong time to film 🤣
@@GardenStateTortoise i will wait 🤗
Las hermanis son muy populares
Casi todos la tienen
Son muy lindas
Cómo me encantaría tener una parejita
Escomplicado
Ellas hibernan
Yo vivo en el trópico
Great video! How many western hermann’s tortoises would you recommend housing together? Or perhaps a better question, which ratio of males to females? Thanks in advance!
Couple months ago I began caring for a Mojave Desert Tortoise as part of a legal rescue. Just started building a burrow outside for him, he likes a lot of room to roam around. I’ll be planting native plants for him, but right now he’s very picky eating dandelion greens. Having a hard time getting him to eat anything else.
I love them! For myself I don't have any because I worry about who would be able to take over their care if they outlive me.
Well thanks for being responsible Pamela!
Can we please have a video all about the Eastern Herman's particularly?!?! Cheers!
How cute-attracted to your tattoo!
🤣🤣
I love the #Brianstrong t shirt.
Great information ❤. Quick question: I have really cold winters, so 5 months per year I'll need to keep them indoor. But what temperature is too cold at night for them so they need to be kept inside? Thanks 👍
I need some of these
I have mine in a cold frame enclosure and it works in the winter
love western hermann's torts.
Awesome us too!
@@GardenStateTortoise i have two tuscan hatchlings linage from your colony.
When you say the “descend underground again,” is that what you’re simulating with the greenhouse enclosures? Do they normally burrow during the colder months?
Looking to get my first tortoise. Thoughts on these compared to the easier to get Eastern???
Radiated tortoise also looks beautiful
They do and we show them in many of our videos!
In Indonesia, we don't have western hermanii.. Never heard someone have it, we only got eastern around here :(
I’m sorry. Eastern are wonderful too!
I’m planning on getting Herman tortoise do you have any tips (I watched your videos for research so Ty)
They’re so pretty!! I have a female Red Footed. I love her!! She’s maybe a year old. Not sure.
One thing I never really see in these videos is water source/maintenance. Are you using shallow pans? I’m wondering if we should use the same reptile ramp bowl we use inside.
Yes you can. We’ve covered the outdoor dishes in older videos. Large stainless steel pans or large terra cotta saucers work well.
9:18 why is no one talking about how cute this is
What would you say is the farthest north in the US that you'd be able to have the Western Herman's Tortoise outside in the winter? For example, would it be possible for someone in central NY to keep them outside and are any kind of modifications needed? For example would you need a deeper burrowing area with a certain kind of substrate? That being said, what is a suitable substrate for them to burrow into to brumate? The ground in certain areas tends to be more clay based which I would assume is not ideal.
Yes and I know people in Minnesota with them. As long as they have a safe, protected area to hibernate they’ll be ok.
I suppose our milder winters up this way of late can’t hurt either.
I have what I thought was a sulcuta. He's grown very large very fast. 3 yrs old, 50 lbs I was doing some research, seems there are also sudanese sulcutas. Much larger. Could you elaborate on these. He's so amazingly strong at 3.
❤
Hey, Chris, where would I go to find one of these little fellas if I wanted to start my own outside habitat? I live in NE Florida.
Can the western Hermet be ok year around in an out side pen in South Carolina.
Can you sell these tortoises to NJ residents? Excellent video by the way!
Thank you! Unfortunately no, no sales of tortoises or turtles can be legally conducted within NJ state lines.
for me how i see it its hermann's tortoises or box turtles
they seem the best for starters
If you keep a hermanns Tortoise indoors for the winter, does it still have to hibernate?
Is there a minimum group size if you're going to keep them together? I've heard keeping them in pairs can be problematic, but that may not have been in relation to this breed.
