    Agreed. As a former apple and beef cattle farmer that used to own a JD 4020 diesel, I couldn't agree more. People have apparently lost their friggen minds these days with the insane prices that are being paid for these tractors.

    I like dads saying, "an auction is a great place to watch fools and thier money part." Rare or not, it aint easy being green.... and yellow.

    The people don't get it, the fact that the tractors sold for what they did is because they are rare and only handfuls were made

    1997, dad auctioned his farm off. We had a 68, or 69 I forget now, 4020 deisel powershift, 6000 hours. Dual remotes with the side console with the 3pt, hiniker cab on it. 7000 dollars. had new tires. Personally, i thought it was a gutless tractor when it came time to pull. it had a nice powerband for PTO stuff, ran the haybine and hay chopper nicely. Was really really nice with the cab with some snow chains for the manure spreader in winter, although we had to leave a block heater on it for 4 hours before we could start it. Couldnt pull a load that great. Of course, our other bigger tractor was a 60's Case 1030, so not a fair comparison I suppose. 50 grand for a 4020 means some yuppie has too much time and money on their hands.

      Sounds like your tractor was coming due for an overhaul. The power-shift trannys also used more power from the engine than a synchro-shift. Also, 6000 hours isn't terrible, but it's well on it's way to getting up there for the need for new injectors and possibly an in-frame overhaul, at minimum.

    It's worth whatever you can get people to pay. All you need is two people with more money than sense. However, having said that, most times there are reasons something brings a lot and sometimes the reasons are many times not that obvious.

    A lot of money, for sure. But WAY less expensive than a much newer one of roughly the same rating. Very rugged and reliable. Also, for many farmers, less of a hassle to repair. ALL mechanical, no electronics. BTW has anyone seen the prices that old Cornbinders are now fetching?

    The old 4wd are a stunner I was supprised to see MF tractors in the UK were available in 4wd.I wonder if he specially ordered from the Europe to get them in 4wd.I know how we here in North America are grown like mushrooms.Kept in the dark and fed shit.

    It was a powershift diesel with side console. Plus the front-wheel drive. Very very rare. Also very good condition. In Minnesota. 4020's are very popular. A dead mans tractor. No wonder it sold for that much.

  • @jd403020
    @jd403020 Před 11 lety +7

    4020 is by far one of the best tractors John Deere built, but anyone paying more than $13,000 for one is an idiot. $50,000 buys a flawless 4555 MFWD. And any LP tractor is worthless.

  • @SuperTurboDiesel2
    @SuperTurboDiesel2 Před 11 lety +1

    Wow... apparently I screwed up. Guess I should have held onto my 1966 JD 4020 synchro shift, dual rear remotes, M&W turbo diesel, hydraulic FWA (front-wheel assist), and a full set of front and rear weights for a few more years! If I would have given it a paint job and some new rubber, I could have sent it out west to an auction where some fool would have paid me close to 770% MORE than I sold it for, which was a meager $6,500 cash. Private sale, posted via Craigslist. Unfrickenbelieveable!

    The reason it went for 50K was for the collector mentality. this 4020 was a rare 4wd 4020. Yes for practical reasons like farm work one would spend that 50K on a far more modern larger tractor. But this purchase is like buying an old restored antique car. not buying to commute to work, get groceries haul kids around but to sit and look pretty and maybe in a parade. Not going to be put to work hauling manure or hay.

    Nice advertising for farm journals biggest advertiser. Who bought these tractors? Deere &co? Now every guy with a 4020 thinks its gold when you can buy them for 5-8000 everyday of the week. Also funny when record prices on other color tractors happen.....no.media! how odd

      Oh man, not paying attention....I've reported hundreds of record prices on all colors of equipment now for 27 years. Tons of CZcams videos posted on high selling CaseIH, Ford, Agco, New Holland tractors + reporting, columns, social media posts and videos on other types of used farm equipment, all makes. Also daily reporting on avg. and low sale prices on all Type/Make/Model equipment

      +Machinery Pete Sorry Pete, I get your magazine and read your auction prices, also farm, and buy and sell machinery, your numbers are skewed from the real world numbers that are being seen everyday. Nothing personal Pete,

      No prob RJ. Actually though our auction price data simply reflects reality, has for past 27 years. For example Avg. auction price so far this year on JD 4430 Tractors down 9.9%. Avg. Price this year $11,054; Avg. Price last year $12,274. Big reason is we've already seen 42.5% more 4430's sold at auction this year vs. all of last year, actually twice as many already this year vs. 3 years ago (2013). I report on all these factors on on-going basis....sometimes Up, sometimes down, etc. Summer '14 I was reporting big down in terms of used equipment values. Big down....15-25% drop in value across the board, which I reported on daily. If you buy & sell used equipment you need access to all our auction sale price data at Machinerypete.com, not just the column in print

      I think your giving a thumb nail service, and think having your job would be awesome, but wouldn't agree the prices are based in reality. Just watching auction time weekly sales, shows a pretty good idea of trends. Locally last week a nice 4440 with duals only brought $9300, and the same farmers 4850 duals fwa, and 500 yrs on an overhaul nice condition, good paint, tires , interior stopped at $15500, a 4430 on that sale brought $9500 and another 4850 brought $17500, beautiful great plains no till drill 15' was $2700. That's very weak prices

      Reality is the BIG picture look...just focusing on the low end wholesale market via auctiontime is a piece of the puzzle, but not the whole puzzle. We have worked with 1,000+ auction firms throughout North America for over quarter century. Data is data. BIG picture = more accurate picture. Some sales stuff sells low, some sales stuff sells ok, some sales stuff sells higher. Day by day process
