This is what I want to do!! I'm 17 and as long as I can remember I've always wanted to work in music. One thing I always love were songs or background music in my favorite movies and cartoons. And I'm wanting to work twords turning this into s living!!
Where can I go to teach myself how to do this? If I had a full year of intense dedication, where should I look? I have about $1,300, and I want to know what books and software I can get started on. Because it's only when I listen to Hans Zimmer, Two Steps from Hell, Howard Shore, Steve Jablonsky, Michael Giacchino, or Joe Hisaishi that I feel like I can actually live. I'm a college sophomore right now on a pre-med track, and every day I wake up I feel like I'm about to have a cardiac arrest incident because I hate what I do. I'm really trying to throw myself into this during a gap year to figure out if I could actually do this, and I want to spend hours on hours because I think this is So. Damn. Awesome. I used to be a first chair violinist of an orchestra so in terms of orchestral sounds, I know at least something. I also know basic music theory. But, it's close to nothing, so I need to find resources. Please help me.
There is a book called "on the track" that should have some really good information on film composing and you can acutally find a free pdf copy of it online
A good place to start is just brute forcing it. Get a cheap or free DAW and cheap or free sample library and toy with it during free time to get comfortable. Then when you hit the books, software learning curves won't be so steep.
+Jay Jeong as said, start off with a DAW - I use and would recommend Ableton - but others just as good- I think too many people get caught up in the fun of researching and buying software, equipment and spend crazy money on these things. Get a decent pc/mac, a DAW and maybe consider something like Kontakt 5 or East West and an "all rounder" library package, something with good cellos, violins, violas, horns, trumpets etc etc rather than spend big big money on a specific library focusing on one section such as a $500 dollar string library. Get a decent midi keyboard and you are good to go . As the work comes in, re invest the money into better packages/libraries to "refine" your sound - DONT WASTE TIME watching endless library and equipment overviews - watch tuts on actually creating music. - BEST of luck friend! ;)
@@Tekashiixine-cq6rr Best thing to do is to build a portfolio of the music you can make. There's always a litany of jobs available don't strictly just start in films. However, the best way to get your name in contact with production companies is by hiring an agent that is why you need a portfolio. This will show your talent and what you can offer.
@@Tekashiixine-cq6rr Craigslist in Los Angeles is a great source for leads. Hundreds of productions advertise on there looking for everything from DP's to runners. Use it to find productions and send them your links. Getting your music into low budget independent productions does not pay much money but it is the easiest way to start getting your music into films and if you are good people will come back to you and recommend you.
@@charliemcgrain This and ousama hachoumi's comment have pretty much nailed it. Also if you have any friends or know people that are film students and want music for their project/assignments, it's another good way to start (especially for building your portfolio).
I’m a senior in high school (I’m currently 18) and I’ve been playing the piano since I was ten, and the violin since I was 13. A year ago I started playing the guitar, too. In my country (Italy) there’s this “special” kind of high school you can attend: they call it “musical high school”. You have to audition to get in. I auditioned when I was 13 and I got in. It’s just a regular high school, really, but you learn about music theory, harmony, music production and history of music. And, most important thing, you study two instruments that you can choose (well, kinda... ): the first one is the one you auditioned with (it’s the piano for me) and the second one is assigned (violin for me). I’m about to dive into my last high school year and I know that this is what I want to do: film composition. I know about harmony, and music theory, and I play three instruments, and yet sometimes even I get the feeling that I’ll never make it. My question is: how do I make it? What do I study at university? I know that there is a master in “Composition for screen” but I need an undergraduate degree before doing that, and I have no idea what to get it in. I also want to attend university in a country that will give me more opportunities, job-wise. People think that if you want to peruse a music career, Italy is the best country but, trust me, when it comes to composition, it really isn’t. Ennio Morricone is the exception. Nobody makes it here. I’m so lost. I know what I want to do, but I have no idea where to start. If someone has any ideas or any piece of advice, I’m begging you to share. Thanks for reading.
Hello and congratulations aboute the video. I want to start a carrer as a Film media compose and arrangeur , and i wanted to ask if i need to go to a university , or a conservatory of Arts, or some courses are enough to come to my target. Im alerady composing through Ableton live 10 , usinge smaples and virtual intruments and libraries, but the sound and audio Processing needs imporvement although im am musician, a singer play the piano . I wound be sooo grateful if you could give me some instructions about where to start. Thank you in advance,!
You are talking about how to get started in Film Composing but I never heard something about you. So it sounds for me a bit confusing and unbelievable. But thats just my opinion of course :-)
I was making electro music for 4 years now and what I can say it's more you practice, more you'll be better. I think my best tracks was made this last months, and I was starting music from scratch (no in a school or something like that). Sometimes I make orchestral tracks and it's pretty cool. For me I think you just need to see the scene, and start singing or playing on the keyboard what should cope with, so you can fill the scene like that.
no youtube "composer" ever seems willing to tell anyone exactly how to get jobs because perhaps they'd lose opportunities themselves. these types of videos pique interest and generate minor youtube publicity but ultimately lead nowhere or to some class you gotta take that leads nowhere. damn shame. but like everything, the secrets are guarded because of false/real scarcity.
There is a lot of news and newer filmmaker and different type of projects to integrate in every day. There is a bunch of short film on youtube you can try to score, maybe show to the creator of this things then if you're good they will take you for future short films. Or maybe just put on youtube so you can send to casting directors. For me i'm trying to turn to film score while i'm at electronics songs, maybe I'll never get to have to compose for a movie but while I'll be proud if I already can produce someone. Don't wait for the job, get to it!
Thanks so much for sharing Andrew!:)

Decided to stay in school. Still hate it. But you know, reality... I've been working on a novel in the meantime. I should be done by February.
Do grade 8 music theory, the books and grade 8 exam will cost u about £150 maybe last then by software to compose in that will cost u about £100
