The DEATH of Michael Wittmann - Ep 37 The Plastic General

- Who killed Michael Wittmann? Over the years there has been much speculation amongst historians over the death of the German WW2 tank commander. Wittmann became a household name in Germany with a reputation of being a great Panzer Ace. By early 1944 he had been credited with destroying 66 enemy Russian tanks on the Eastern Front and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Nazi propaganda machine touted his accomplishments and he become known as the Black Baron. A WW2 tank version of the famous WW1 fighter pilot Baron von Richthofen, known around the world as the Red Baron.
Having been reassigned to France the Black Baron and his company of Tiger tanks advanced to Normandy the day after D-Day. Wittmann's fame rose even more after taking out a number of Allied tanks and other vehicles during the Battle of Villers-Bocage in Normandy. The reports of the battle and the destruction done by Wittmann were overstated to boost morale in Germany. Less than two months later Wittmann was dead, the turret of his tank blown off in another Normandy battle. Claims of defeating Wittmann were made, after the war, by the 1st Polish Armoured Division, the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, the 144th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps, and the RAF Second Tactical Air Force. Nazi propaganda at the time claimed that the 'panzer ace' was killed by Allied aircraft. This was probably done to further strengthen the pride of Germans in the reputation of Wittmann by suggesting that he was not defeated and killed in a battle of tank equals.
In this episode of The PLASTIC GENERAL the last battle of Michael Wittmann, the Tiger Ace, is creatively presented with live action, 1:32 plastic toy soldiers, model tanks, hand built sets, and the amazing special effects The Plastic General has become known for. Thanks Craig! Big learning curve so I can't wait to tackle the next one and make it smoother!
The engine air cleaners on the early Tiger tanks were called Fiefel cleaners. Wonderful and imaginative recreation of Whittman's last mission. Thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Stay crazy my friend.....crazy.

I have no choice! CRAZY runs within my Plastic Blood!!
General Plastic Sir! Lots of imagination and creativity in your production of The Death Of Mike Whitman. As someone who worked in the film and television industry I applaud you on a very entertaining production. My brother used to work for 21st-century twice in the 90s and I have quite a collection of their 1/32 and 1/6 scale figures in vehicles. I’ve never taken them out of the box but you have inspired me to do something with them someday.
Wow! Thank you! I would love to ask your brother about 21st Cent. Toys! My all time favorite toy company!!

I was 10 years ago at La Cambe cemetery in French Normandie, it turned out that a mysterious person put fresh flowers at Wittmann's grave every day.
Good video Plastic General.

This is your best work yet
WHAT?! You think so?! OK, thanks!
Remember seeing a couple of years ago that Forces of Valor/ waltersons were going to do Wittmann's Tiger 007 (the Tiger died in, not sure if they are still going to do it hopefully they do.
YES they should and with the character figure too!
@@ThePlasticGeneral definitely
Another great one Dude ! I love that Waltersons Stuff :)
Me Too!!!
Glad to see you back. I was lucky to find the CTS/ Airfix Sherman on sale by them years ago and ended up with six of them in the stash. Great looking early Sherman. As I remember Whitmann was done in by Canadian tanks, who had really taken a blistering by the Panzers in their operational area .....And ..... the way you " decaffeinated " the poor Allied tank commander 🤣 ..... again, thanks and keep up the GREAT work .....Oh yeah, as Oddball pointed out , a Tiger has only one weak spot , so always keep you " weak spot " covered 😝 ! 👍👍👍👍👍❤🇺🇸
Thanks Man!! It was a big episode to make by myself! Starting the new one tomorrow!!
Yeah buddy! So happy that you are making regular PG episodes! Panzer Aces! Wittmann was such a badass! Wittman's Panzer Unit was brought west after Kursk to the Battle of Bocage. Love the topic, all the fantastic tanks, and video presentation!
FYI I been looking for a Frontline Figures Churchill for the longest time, with no luck. They are tough to find these days.
Thanks man, still getting used to all the new equipment! I'm going to start a new one right away to capitalize on what I've learned.
Thanks, I wanted to tackle a famous person and the new FOV Tiger I was making such a splash! How could I ignore it?!
@@ThePlasticGeneral Will be faithfully awaiting, PG, Sir!
@@ThePlasticGeneral Yes, I like their new line. Its a little pricey. I like the DAK Tiger I version they have out too. Hopefully they hear you, so we can get a decent Churchill Tank from this outfit.
@@rwcowell That would be Great to replace my Churchill with a good upgrade!
Great show, totally a new level! Battle of Villers -Bocage was awesome!
Thanks! Hard learning curve, but now I'm excited to start the next one!!
Great Show! New Level!
Thanks man, learning curve! The next one will be better!!
Good that you start by showing the Tigers under repair and maintenance, as this is where they spent the vast majority of their time in real life. 🙂
Agreed!
I always got so many extra 21st century tankers way back when. Can do figures l use to buy at Tuesday morning shops for a couple of bucks they also had Greeks and Alamo sets. Great show.
Thanks Tommie!
Nice job, I recognized some of my accessories lol
THANKS AGAIN for all the goodies!! Sadly in the overwhelming juggling toward the end of the edit I forgot to thank you! So THANK YOU PAUL!!!
Absolutely amazing!
ALL FOR YOU!!!!
I had that recall typhoon in my childhood but my mother out it in the coal bunker. The coal man smashed it when he put in the next coal load.

Awesome episode! Love your Tiger!
Thanks man! Don't get bitten by my Tiger!
Do you have a postal address to which fans can post you stuff such as old soldiers which you can put back into service
HA!! I will happily do that right now!!
Great Show. Did you use a NewRay Sherman in this episode?
Nope! Only FOV, 21st Century Toys and Airfix Sherman's.
Dude, you made a tank! Respects.
I made a TIGER I!!!! Now I have to get rid of it!!
@@ThePlasticGeneral Ha! never thought of that. You're trash guy must scratch his head when he comes around your neighborhood.

@@DamianDibuja Thank you my good Sir, may the Plastic Flow in your blood!!
Here's how it works,
Expensive tank models include details like engines etc to satisfy high end customers.
Others like 21st century don't include these details but carry a much lower price point.
TRUE!!
Great show as ever Christian! How about a Ghurkas episode?
Thanks! Coming down the pipe line!
by the way once you finish my castle I want you to do that Steam Boat like the one I have of the San Peebles . Did you want to use one of my Guard uniforms for one of your episodes?
It that WWII?!
Great show Christian. Birthday coming up👍🎂

👍👍👍
Thank you Sir!!! The General is honored!
Commander Wittmann, We are ready ! Very Cool :)
My only regret is that there was a line that got lost from Wittman's fellow commander where he says "who ever makes the most kills tonight doesn't have to buy the drinks" Oh well?
Looks like you’re Hawker Typhoon was missing some white invasion stripes! Good episode!
Man, I painted that thing 13 years ago. I was a Fool! Now I am the Master!!
Beautiful tanks. Adore the massive Churchill.Who made the been fun carrier in the convoy ?.

Thanks man! More fun to come!! Episode #38 B-17's over Europe is coming Next!!
I scored 10 of those airfix Shermans a while ago from cts for 6.50 apiece!
Great Score!! RARE now!!!
nice...
Thank you Sir!! It's good to be Back!!
At Villers-Bocage, they were actually mostly soft-skins that he shot up, trucks, carriers and armoured cars, not so many tanks.
I know you don't care about such pedantry but "Fire!" had a specific meaning in German tank gunnery. You should really be screaming "Shoot!"
Well done. It would have been awful to have to operate a tank in battle. Loud. Sweaty. Armour piercing rounds and all. Not to speak of claustrophobia. It's odd how tanks today look very similar to tanks of WWII. Btw, the muzzle flash and pyrotechnics were great as in all your vids.
Hey Christian you finally got me on here . So as I said green shoulder boards are infantry tankers had pink. His tank number is 007 and he was called the Black Baron and yes I loved the turret blowing up in slow motion that was cool and adding Shultz while your in the Tank was a bonus .
Imagen if my costume collection was so big to have the correct piping and shoulder boards for every uniform?! I'd be Rich!!!
@@ThePlasticGeneral
If you ever visit in Normandy must you look at "Dead man's corner" go and see the war museum, really unbelievable what is there! Captain Winter's uniform is there.

Long Live 1/32 WWII!!!
FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
But has he ever been confirmed dead? Who knows :D
I think the theory that a Typhoon took out Witman's Tiger no longer stands and it's now accepted that it fell victim to an ambush by Shermans of the Canadian Sherbrooke Fusiliers. Norm Christie has a great documentary about the episode.
Agreed! I knew that, but I felt for artistic reasons giving it the benefit of the doubt would lend it's self to a fun ending!
@@ThePlasticGeneral Agreed, keep up the good work!
