Well not quite, there were many instrumentals that hit number one prior and were bigger hits (Percy Faith-Theme From a Summer Place). I think you meant it was the first rock instrumental to hit number one.
@@gpxo11 Yes likely correct rock instrumental, but it still remains the biggest selling one. I'm sure you could go back to Beathoven for # 1 instrumentals but in terms of the content on these reaction videos ... Frankenstein is it !!

I have been listening to Johnny Winter since the early seventies. My older brother bought Still Alive And Well and that did it for me. Favorite Johnny Winter song is Highway 61.
This live version of this song is a total experience. It blew me away the first time I saw it. Edgar Winter is very talented & plays many instruments including keyboards, saxophone & timbales. The title "Frankenstein" refers he fact that the original recording of the song was much longer than the final version & it required numerous edits to shorten it. So they spliced together many different parts.
That contraption Edgar Winter is playing is the ARP 2600 synthesizer. The keyboard strapped around his neck is the controller for it. He was changing the sound by moving sliders and knobs on the main unit. Stevie Wonder also used an ARP 2600 as well as many others, including Ben Burtt, sound designer for Star Wars. R2-D2's sounds were from an ARP 2600. Interesting note: The guy on bass* guitar is Dan Hartman, who had a hit in the late '70s called "Instant Replay", and in the '80s had a hit with "I Can Dream About You". *Edited for correctness
I believe Dan Hartman is actually playing bass and the guitarist is Rick Derringer (great guitarist who did a lot of session work and he had the hit "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo").
Multi-instrumentalists like Edgar Winter impress the ell out of me. It takes most people a lifetime to master one instrument, at least to get good enough to be willing to play in public. I once saw a Hank Williams Jr. show on New Year's Eve and before the night was over that man had played every instrument on that stage and played them all well. Mind boggling.
When I was in the middle of the late teens I was fortunate enough to happen to walk by a venue that Edgar Winter was playing and I got to see him perform this song live mind-blowing
When Edgar winter said in the Tokyo tour interview that the electric keyboard was the greatest invention in his eyes, I believe him because it was MADE for him.
When I lived in Vegas years ago, I saw Edgar Winter open for REO Speedwagon in the show room at the Sahara. Front row right in front of some big ass speakers. Back when you could still light up in those venues and nobody cared. He bout blew our heads off! It was awesome!
A song considered at the time as Progressive Rock. Edgar Winter a pioneer, who was number 1 on the Billboard in 1973 The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week in May 1973
This instrumental came out when I was in 7th grade, 63 now. So glad to see you kids enjoying it and being thankful that I was blessed and able to realize that I was hearing something awesome. Thanks for sharing.
This song was actually something they would play during their soundchecks to warm up. One night their manager happened to be at a soundcheck and heard them doing this song and asked Edgar what is that song and Edgar told him that was something they played to warm up. The manager said that they needed to put that on an album, so they did and it became a monster hit. (pun intended)
Packer fan here. Rock on #12! Also... This song brings me back to when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. My older brother, who was then in HS talked my parents into giving him a room in the basement to hang out with friends. They would jam tunes while playing foosball and this album was often played, with this very song being the one that was most often repeated. This and Free Ride. Good memories...thanks for the upload. Rock on, fellas and God bless.
Good one guys... When this first came out I ran to the record store... That was back in the early 70's... Yes he plays guitar too... He's got a twin brother equally as talented... I think they are both albino.. I forget now... Cuz brother Johnny passed away
Hello Jamel, i have been following your channel for a long time now, I think you would really enjoy Hurricane by Bob Dylan. Its a bit on the long side and would be one of the longer, if not the longest songs you have reviewed yet. Its a story about a man who should have been a huge success but was falsely accused of a crime because of his race and had his legacy and life stolen from him. In my opinion its a masterpiece. Theres one line in there toward the end that some may take offensively if they didnt know the context of it by listening and paying attention to the song. Even if you don’t do a reaction video to it, it is definitely worth a listen. Great song, great lyrics, and great (but sad) story.
I was born in Paterson and have lived, (65+years), and worked in the area. We know the story well. One of my coworkers lived in Paterson all his life. He knew both of them. His last name was Carter also. But he would tell me he was not related to Hurricane. He did tell me many times that they were not innocent.
Very happy to meet your brothers, Jamel. This is my favorite music video of all time, because without watching them play, I wouldn't think any of this was possible.
This one brings back great memories! Have you checked out the old roots of the blues? A fun one is Bull Moose Jackson. Aerosmith remade one if his songs years later.
To fully experience Edgar Winter you have to listen to the entire live double album Edgar Winter's White Trash- Roadwork. It's a blessing in disguise!!!
And he's still doing it 50 years later. Although it's from 13 years ago check out "Rick Derringer Edgar Winter Frankenstein" when they toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band 2010. Rick Derringer is the same guitarist in this video who is a very well known guitarist, and and producer.
Hey gentleman, Mike from Oakland great reviews, but this Frankenstein was spectacular. This was early 70's and did that man start scratching like RUN DMC? Wow it had so much music genius in one song, thank you for turning me on to the group.
right in the 1:00 to 2:00 mark the guitarist there doing the squealy synthing is showing off his skill because he's shifting between playing the synth like it was a saxophone, a trumpet, a trombone, and a tuba all intertwined, like he's emulating the kind of pitch shifting that we iconically associate with a trombone and then doing little trumpet deedly-deets and deep tuba hits, like this whole song is that guy really just showing off his skill at a number of different instruments, he's really talented
Synth was a Arp 2600 with a remote keyboard. You should check out his version of Tobacco Road in his live double album. Great album on so many levels. Lots of serious singing and playing. Edgar is a smoking singer too. But also has Jerry Laquarie singing too. Plus his lead guitarist brother and blues legend Johnny Winter joins for a couple of songs, joining Rick Derringer who played guitar on Frankenstein. Rick was in Johnnys band before this.
From when I was 12 we used to watch 'the old grey whistle test' every week and then we would all talk about the acts at school the next day. we thought all this incredible music was just normal - ha ha.
Just as Frankenstein was made from a bunch of parts......All the different grooves and "parts" that made up the whole song are put together and it works.(comes ALIVE) The guitar player is Rick Derringer. He wrote and sang "Rock and Roll Hoo Chi Koo" and played guitar on a big hit in the 70s called Free Ride!! Bad ass songs there. Good show>>>>
I REM Edgar Winter as saying they called it Frankenstein because the tape ( media ) was so spliced. Recently heard the they called it something near “ Double Drum Song?? Before production
