- Why is it important for 99% of golfers to have a good takeaway? Because it sets up the rest of the swing!
If your takeaway is all over the place, it's unlikely that the rest of the swing will be under control, leading to terrible ball striking and inconsistent contact.
Learn how to start the golf swing off correctly with this simple drill that will help perfect your takeaway!

I am 76 and have been golfing since I was 12. This is the best takeaway lesson and drill I have ever seen. I can’t wait to try it.
Thanks mate 👊🏼
agreed
I agree with you. 73, 45years'experi.used to be a single handicapper.
Another tip i learned was to pretend you are rolling a ball straight backward with the rear of the club head.
@@SamShehu stops you going inside early but doesn’t make you hinge the wrists. This drill if followed correctly will
After five years wondering what had happened to my game I finally went for a lesson a month ago. After the first warmup swing he told me I was taking it back way on the inside. I had no idea. Once that was corrected I was back to playing how I used to in the good old days. Last week I beat 39 other guys in an end of season event. Kicking myself I didn't get this corrected sooner.
Great video with a great example of what alignment sticks can do as a training aid.
One thing tho and I often do not see it covered which is the importance of to much or to little fore arm rotation in the takeaway.
I use this drill often because I tend to rotate my right fore arm to much causing an open club face.
The sticks help greatly in getting a visual clue of keeping the toe slightly closed in this drill.
Keep up the good work.
I take my club too far inside on my backswing. This is great instruction. I have no room to flatten it out coming down and most of the time I’m coming over it causing a pull. It’s very inconsistent. I’m gonna fix this once and for all through sheer repetition. I’m sub’d now. Good job and thank you
So Ryan I’m a single handicap golfer been playing solid for 7 years but my swing was inconsistent. I can score 75 one day and 95 the next and always wondered why. I have been looking for the solution and root cause for years. Watched this video and now I feel for the first time ever that I have a repeatable swing. Thank you for posting this 👍
Thanks for watching mate 👊🏼
@@ryanmouquegolf you’re welcome, subbed.
Exactly what I need. Saw a Gary Player tip “take the club straight back” (but never detailed how to get there) and it made a huge difference just focusing on that but this demo explains how to get there.
Thanks for watching, hope it helps 👊🏼
Great lesson!! I will practice today.
Good video. I taught a one-plane sing plane, with a wide take-away, but there are 3 different swing paths AND shapes - depending the the club selection, lie and desire. LOL! Golf is hard. 🙂 Played Golf for over 30 years and taught it for 17 years - beginner to breaking 80!
Ive been taking it outside but this season ive been more inside and ive hit a lot of fat shots. Now I know why! Great lesson, thanks!
Thanks for watching 👊🏼
Really glad you showed results of ball flight while being off plane. Will definitely work on this drill and hopefully will correct my ball flight. Great video!
Thanks for watching
If you really want a solid understanding of ball flights and how different paths and face angles effect them learn “the new laws of ball flight” which are the basic physics of the game. It’s amazing how many golfers don’t know them and just blindly try to hit different swing positions without really understanding why these positions are crucial.
This is brilliant!!
I love this video. I’ve been to so many golf pros, I’ve told them all my takeaway is the issue as I can’t get into that slot. I always said if I could get the club consistently in the slot it would help so much. This is the best video I’ve seen on the takeaway. I’m going to do this drill. Wish I lived closer I’d come for a lesson. New subscriber here
No need to live close mate, I coach online. Get in touch with me and let’s get something sorted. If you liked this video then personal coaching will be 10x better 👊🏼
@@ryanmouquegolf I’ll be in touch I live in Melbourne
One of the best videos that I didnt get bored or confused watching it.
Many times, instructor talk too much and not really showing much.
Thanks!
Thanks. Long form content on CZcams requires talking so maybe that’s why instructors talk a lot?
@@ryanmouquegolf Maybe so. But for most men, visual demonstration is best. We (I) emulate or learn better by watching someone do it. In other words...talk less show more. This video of yours, is a good example...it captured that elements I'm talking about. It's engaging, by this I mean, you are talking and showing/demonstrating at the same time.
What's disengaging is when an instructor talk for a long time and then in the last minute, quickly show it. This is not very engaging, let alone helpful, that's all.
Thanks
@@vuetube4558 yes I agree mate. Good to know which will help my videos in the future. Nothing worse than 8mins of talk and then 30 secs showing u at the end. I agree 👊🏼
Great lesson. Ty so much.
Love this video. I'm gonna give this a try. Appreciate your pacing and how you perfectly explain everything for us simpletons
Thanks for watching Ryan 👊🏼
wow.. Very nice! 이건 한번 꼭 봐야하는 영상!
Great info, thank you
🎉 I had a lesson with you and this is what you told me to work on. Will add this drill!
It’s still not fixed yet? You need another one 😂👊🏼
@@ryanmouquegolf ABC (always be coaching)
Very good explanation😊
Very good demonstartion and explanation - Thank U for this video and for reminding us of this so important part of the golfswng
Thanks for watching 👊🏼
Hands down the best 12 minute golf instruction video I have ever seen.
Thanks, appreciate it
Excellent presentation of such a vital aspect of the swing! Subscribed
Thanks!
Well put
Love the video and will try this drill out today, but have a question or two. 1. Will I need a different alignment rod placement and thus a different take away for each club or are the alignment rods spaced such that one set up is good for most or all clubs? 2. I have a bad habit of an over the top swing with a square face to path, thus shots headlining off the fairway left but on a straight path. (Right hand golfer) will this drill help that or am I doing something wrong at the top / start of my down swing? Im hoping that the proper take away will put me in a better position for the down swing. I do try to visualize keeping my back to the target as long as I can in the down swing but wonder if I am letting my arms drop or if I spin around my spine, thus over the top. Do you have a drill / explanation of the down swing move?
Sorry for the long question.
Thank you for providing helping a frustrated golfer.
Scott
Hi Scott. For different clubs the sticks are still put in the same spot but make sure they are at the same angle as the club sits at address.
Regarding ur other issues, the honest truth is you should see a coach. This is purely a takeaway video. The other stuff u have going on should be worked on with a professional perhaps.
Swing away! Love this content
Super helpful!
Thanks for watching 👊🏼
this video helps a lot, thanks
Thanks for watching
고마워요! 진짜 레슨 너무좋네요
What happens after you’ve done some vertical hinge and shoulder turn and have the club at your spine angle? Do you have a video on how to transition up to the backswing from that position specifically?
Just turn mate. Dont overthink it
Just ordered some sticks gonna try this out
EXCELLENT VIDEO !!! well explained, logical, does not rush through explanations, props are very good. AAA+++
Appreciate it 👊🏼
I find it much easier to have a deep inside take away, lift, then make an over the top move, similar to Sam snead. Much easier on the body, and creates so much more leverage.
This is 12 minutes of excellence
Thanks mate 👊🏼
Nice lesson. My hinge trigger is when the club has moved 45* in the arc. Then I can swing up on plane. It works pretty well for me at least.
Wondering how far back behind the club on the ground do you place those alignment sticks. You showed 1/2 foot on each side but how far back behind the club on the ground
I think I said it in the vid but if not, 1 club length. Lay the club down behind the ball.
On the downswing should the club come back down thru the alignment sticks or below the one that’s closer to the body ?
In this case, through them.
Inside is my tendency as well.... Great drill and advice sir.
Cheers mate 👊🏼
excellent
Thanks!
No… thank you for watching 👊🏼
new abonné here! bravo merci
Tried and true drill
Brilliant Drill, explanation, demonstration. I’ll get back to this in 30 days to report results. 8/29
Thanks for watching 👊🏼
How did it go?
Awesome
Since a kid I always rolled the club inside then got across the line at the top. For years I’ve worked on getting it back like this which I can do, I now get to a good halfway back position, but I still get across the line once at the top and it causes me to come way from the inside with hooks/blocks on a bad day. How can I stop getting it across the line? 🙏
Without seeing WHY you get across the line I’d be guessing mate.
Perhaps a lesson to work on ur own personal tendencies?
@@ryanmouquegolf yes defo some lessons needed. I play off 9 but haven’t had one for over 10 years and I know I should be shooting lower but when one of the nasty hooks/blocks shows up it’s a card wrecker!
the golf illusion, make it easy
I'm Jack since 28 started golfing, but until now still don't know how to turn out my left shoulder..... To get the better swing yet....
Please..... 🙏
Jump on my site and book a lesson mate. Or jump on YT and type in “how to turn out my left shoulder”
I personally don’t know what turning out the left shoulder means sorry
Funny, there are pros who take the club away all three ways, below, above or on the line, yet their down swings pretty much look the same that split second Before impact.
Most definitely
Not too many recreational golfer do though 🙂
Without incorporating the cupping of the right wrist/bowing of the left your club face is going to be open. You can see in the rehearsal 11:28 you're almost vertical whereas every good player is going to have that face at more of the 1 o'clock position.
You actually do this in your real swing but important to call out if you're drilling just the takeaway.
U can have a cupped lead wrist at P2 and not have the face open IF your grip is strong enough.
動画勉強になります。
ただ、切り返しの際にグリップからクラブが立って降りてくるように見えます。
球筋に影響がないとしても、自分もそのような見え方のスイングなので、改善方法が知りたいです。
My issue is how to get from P2 to the top? I don’t know hours to do that. No one seems to be sure that?
Keep turning and allow the club to load upwards. If that’s hard for u to do, it could be something else stopping u. I don’t know what but would easily be worked on during a personalised lesson
You definitely aren’t hinging the club correctly
@@Supermoneygang12 send me a video of you showing an example of how to correctly hinge the club. Send to my email and I’ll take a look. I’ll also post it online to make sure it’s correct. Cheers mate looking forward to seeing it
45 degrees
Why don't you just move up some and swing instead of taking off the alignment sticks that would probably be easier anytime you want to practice the takeaway again move back into the alignment sticks , great video btw!! Funny 😁
Yeah, I advice players have a “drill station” and a hitting station. Pretty much as u said there or next to them
Irons usually don't give u as much trouble as drivers do with ball trajectory.
Cerdas juga Kau bang
Ryan's bad shots are the equivalent of my best shots...
Damn 😂
I'm assuming it works with the driver also...
Of course 👊🏼
Yes...i have a good p2 position....but that itself doesn't guarantee a good position at top, downswing, sequence n strike ....golf is that complicated....
Of course, many other moving parts that all have to fall into place
Easier said than done
Never said it was easy… everything requires work and lots of it
Theres also injury limitations. Were not Pros unfortunately
What injury will u pick up from creating a better takeaway? And why do u have to be a pro to achieve this?
99% of CZcams golf instructors say that “99% of golfers do X” in 99% of their videos. There’s like 80 things I’ve seen that 99% of us do. I’m overdosing on swing thoughts
Great lesson though
I’ll always advocate for getting personalised help specific for YOU. Hire a coach to minimise the thoughts 👊🏼
Ever hear of Raymond Floyd. If it is more natural for you and you're hitting it where you're looking...go play.
Hands moving away from the body during takeaway works pretty good for Couples and Furik.....Just saying.....Humans are not machines; everyone's body moves differently. Impact is the most important part of the golf swing. Every pro has learned to make adjustments coming into impact to be successful, regardless of takeaway.
99% of tour pros 🙂 I didn’t say everyone… but the majority do.
Dude casually acting like the wildest swings in pga history are a great example 😂
@@Supermoneygang12 No one every hit the ball on the back swing....just saying.
Really love the video but you didnt get to the point until 5 minutes in. Maybe try putting a clip at the beginning of what the drills/point are. You'll lose most youtube viewers if we have to sift through the video to try and find the point.
If I put everything in the first minute then why watch the rest of the video?
Not everything. A small clip of what to expect. The alternative is missing out on viewers entirely lol. Us young kids have a very small attention span. Just a little constructive criticism from a viewer. Keep up the great work. @@ryanmouquegolf
Great tips; almost perfect if your swing could of manipulated what you were trying to make us do.
You expect me to be able to replicate every different movement of the golf swing every single time do you?
Matt Wolff one day, Adam Scott the next… geez
I don't expect you to replicate every different movement however at least don't suck at it like your swing lol did I hurt your small feeling like your crap swing? By all mean your teaching tips were fantastic and I wasn't here to upset you lil boy but may be have a coffee break and work on your temper and maybe your swing too while at it hahahahaha
too many ads
I don’t get to choose how many ads are shown. CZcams probably showing more ads due to the videos popularity
Ridiculous amount of ads
I don’t get to choose how many ads get shown mate. Not up to me.
After 753k views you are the first to say that… ads get shown to different people and the amount of them differ as well
The theory is fine, but experience tells me that if you aren't hitting balls with the gate in place, then you won't get much out of it. Hitting actual golf shots has a hypnotic effect on most people.
looks horrific
말만 존나게 많네 코쟁이
Focus on the correct too much negative explanation distracts from your lesson.
It’s not negative alt all. I’m teaching golfers what the most common movements of the takeaway produces so that when your on your own at the range you can identify what movement you’re creating.
If you think all you need is the “how to fix” then you’re probably not very good at this game.
Go on IG and watch 30 sec reels of positivity if that what you’re wanting. Long form content teaching golfers more in depth probably isn’t your thing
Nice advice but way too complicated for me. You’d have practice at 10,000 times before you got it down.
Correct. You do need to practice. Good luck getting better if you don’t
Great takeaway lesson Ryan. All golfers can learn and become better. 💯

Because they were taught that way!
That's all you can swing, don't teach anyone. Let's fix the flat swing top first.
The way I swing doesn't affect my knowledge to help others mate. Knowing and doing are 2 different things. Rickie Fowler & Matt Kuchar have done ok with flat swings. Pretty un-educated comment there sir. Have a good day.
Sorry you talk to much!! Just say what to do.I can teach the swing in one minute!, the rest is practice!
Sorry. Next time I’ll be silent
Talking much to much about what is wrong!
