This is about johnny come lately US billioinaires and companies like Nike, none of whom had any significant role in football from 1860 - 2000, thinking that they now rule football. They don't rule football, they rule a business that purports to call itself football. Football is a sport supported by fans, it is not a business frequented by customers. I simply don't understand why anyone wastes time deferring to Americans who have zero to teach sports about sport, even if they have much to teach about cartels, profits for failure and franchises leaving communities because they don't care about the social captial of a sports club, all they care about is making money.
The most important thing about the EPL is that Americans cannot start to say who is a fit and proper owner. They want 20 American owners in a league without relegation, that is painfully obvious. Regulation by the UK Government must make it quite clear that clubs are NOT leaving their home towns/cities to please US robber baroins. They are not moving cities as a franchise. They will be zero public subsidies for billionaires expecting others to build stadia for them. There will not be American coaches and players foisted onto the EPL unless their standards match the best in the world.
Americans did not 'make the EPL successful', they bought into it because it was already so successful that it put the inward-looking US sports to shame in terms of its global appeal.
The stadia were full of English fans, not American fans and that is why the Americans bought in. Now they want to deny English fans what has been their social heritage for 150 years and more. They are going to have to be told that that is totally unacceptable.

I don't see why they should only market to america by the way. In asia, pre-season friendly matches go for insane prices. Imagine competitive matches. Go to thailand, malaysia, indonesia or singapore. Tons of people walk around wearing jerseys.

If man united and arsenal were both in the USA for pre-season and the premier league made sure they played eachother first game of the season then it wouldnt be an issue, theyd just stay a little bit longer in the USA.

The rights fees market is drying up for sports. The next revenue stream are from countries bidding for hosting rights (see WWE and UFC holding events in perth australia / Taylor Swift in Singapore for example). Clubs have to pay the piper. You earn so much from overseas fans to afford the big players, now its time to repay their favor.
They can also explore expanding the league to 21 teams and hold the additional 2 home and away fixtures overseas, increasing squad sizes.
For every additional new "problem", clubs will find a solution. The managers should relish that challenge since they are now so highly paid and have so many people in their backroom staff like analysts and throw in coaches.
If they could adjust for the league pause during the Qatar World Cup, they can adjust to anything. Remember the initial EPL had 22 clubs for the first 2 seasons.

The Premier League is looking at the money that the NFL is making by going abroad in one or two games a season, and thinking that they can top that, and they probably could. I suspect there is a far greater appetite for PL games around the world than for the NFL, and that may be why American investors are so interested in the clubs. Eventually the Premier League (or a few of its members) will likely all but abandon their season ticket fans in favour of more tourists at games. There are already significant numbers of fans travelling for games from abroad, and it's no coincidence that clubs are building hotels in or around their stadiums. I suppose the silver lining may be televised 3pm games on UK TV, but I suspect it's more likely that clubs will run their own subscription services, so you pay through the nose to see your club and not be there, with a far less engaged fan base in the stadiums.

Our top-flight league was better when there were no American owners in it. The homegrown fans have been forgotten and the Premier League is not the best league in the world for several reasons, American owners taking over clubs, ripping the heart out of them, lining their pockets and fraudulently lying to the supporters. Inept referering from our own homegrown referees. The FA putting a gun to players heads and denying them the right to speak openly and honestly about the standards of referees, the list goes on. And to add to the mix, the 🇺🇸 owners of 4 of the original 6 trying to damage the whole of English football by setting up a seperstr closed division where no promotion or relegation was included.
The Premier League has shown that American owners can do as they please and not be punished, where as Abramovich was kicked out and they are trying to possibly oust Mansour and his ownership at City. Absolute hypocrites.

Most football fans go to a game for the Crowd, not to watch the football
You can dress 11 players up in Liverpool kits and play a game now anywhere around the world, but ZERO Scousers will turn up with their songs and attitude
    You cant take the crowds
Its just like these idiot game studios buying the name, losing all the weirdo talent , replacing them with normal people and every single game they make is rubbish
They don't understand its not a brand name that does it , its magic

If this happens football fans will moan about it but carry on paying for their sports subscriptions, buying their merchandise and season tickets. The reason the clubs and governing bodies keep crapping on the fans is because they know the fans are like crackheads who will continue coughing up money for their next fix, regardless of how badly they are treated or how boring the sport is compared to 20 years ago.

      @russellward4624 Před měsícem +2

And? NFL is football. NFL regular season games don't count the way PL games count. They don't play playoff games overseas. Football is based on a home and away model. You take away home games you effect the competive balance. Not only have the teams not played the same schedule but they've added a level of difficulty of travel nobody else has.
