  • My last video was a "Short" ( • [S14] You might recogn... )... so here's a "Long" video as a compensation... well at least for a "2-Minute Warning" video 😅
    Back again with a full Roland instruments set, including for the first time the handy Compact S-1 Tweak Synth! • S-1 Tweak Synth (Roland)
    All the synth parts were sequenced by the NDLR synth and the drums were played by the Roland TR-6S (using its internal sequencer). See details below 😉
    * Hardware used *
    // BASS:
    - Roland SE-02 (analog mono synth) + Dreadbox Lethargy (analog phaser) + Walrus Audio Julianna (analog chorus/vibrato)
    // CHIMES and PADS:
    - Roland JD-08 (digital 128-voice, bi-timbral synth) + Pill (analog ducking pedal)
    // PLUCKS:
    - Roland S-1 (4-voice digital synth, inspired by the famous mono synth SH-101)
    // DRUMS:
    - Roland TR-6S (digital rhythm performer drum machine)
    // SEQUENCER:
    - Conductive Labs NDLR (MIDI Four-track, Sequenced Arpeggiator, Chord and Drone Player)

      Don't know if I'll be able to make such a video 😅 I can however share with with you some tips which work quite nice for me:
      1- I don't use the NDLR very often, thus it's always a pleasure when connecting back the machine in my setup to come up with refreshing and interesting ideas!
      2- I generally start by choosing a KEY/MODE then playing with different chords until I find something which talks to me.
      3- I'll then choose the MOTIFs, even if it means using the PATTERN and RHYTHM editors (which can help to come with some enjoyable sequences.
      4- The CHORD SEQUENCER is also a very handy tool to set up chord changes automatically. Therefore it leaves more place to interact directly with the instruments/effects (like I did hear 😉).
      5- If you want to go in the dance/house territories, the easiest way for the percussion parts will be to synchronize a drum machine with the NDLR (the small Roland TR-6S here, which also has a few tricks which I didn't have the time to use here - as its master effects etc. which can really help to make builds etc.!).
      6- To add some variations, you can also use the 8 MOD slots to modulate some of the parameters of the NDLR.
      Hope this might help a little bit? 😊

      As for the sync question, there's not really a lot of syncing going on with this video as the NDLR is sequencing the 3 instruments (SE02, JD08 and S1). However the NDLR and TR-6S are clock synced to my DAW (this is quite a handy setup when recording in a DAW). Otherwise I would have used the NDLR as the master clock with the TR-6S' clock slaved to it.
      Hope it helped understand a bit more what's going on behind the scenes? 😊

      Actually, you can't put out only the kick on the phones out. Long story short: when I bought the Pill Pedal, I asked to David (its creator) if there was an EQ on the trigger's input in order to be able to get only the low frequencies as a trigger for example. He answered me that no, but if you get the threshold right on the pedal it will work, as generally the kick is louder than the other percussive parts. You have 5 listed in the description but the other 3 are mentioned in the video, could you explain more to what each of those 3 are + what they are doing exactly??
    Can you elaborate deeper about how everything is routed??
    Any other equipment used that’s not mentioned/shown (including any DAWs)?
    Any audio or midi interfaces(etc)??
    I just wanna have 4 boutiques all sequenced+triggered together and be able to play off my speakers instead of those tin-y internal ones of the boutiques 😭😭

    • @2MinuteWarning
      @2MinuteWarning  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hi, maybe it will be easier to help you according to your needs 😉
      Could you please tell me which boutiques you have? I guess they all have an integrated sequencer? Have you planned to use an external sequencer? (like I did here with the NDLR for example). Also are you planning to use a DAW too?
      So you'll need to set up 2 things: a way to sync your instruments (using MIDI) and to hear a mix of your instruments (audio mixer or sound card with multiple inputs if you plan to use a DAW to record, like me).
      - SYNC your instruments:
      * You can use MIDI cables to connect the output of one instrument into the input of another (daisy chain your instruments). One of your instruments will have to be the master clock and all the others the slaves. When you hit play on the master, the sequencers of the other boutiques will start in sync with the master.
      - AUDIO mix:
      * The best way is to use an audio mixer like this one for example:www.thomann.de/fr/mackie_mix12fx.htm. You connect all the audio outs of your boutiques to your mixer, and the mixer's main outputs to your monitors
      * Another way if you don't want to get a mixer, is to use the "'audio mix in" of your boutiques (if they all have one?). You can daisy chain this time the audio and connect the last instrument to your speakers directly.
      Hope it helps a bit?

      I have tried the daisy chaining a few times but it never works out when trying to get it all going through my monitors
      I was thinking the best means to get signal to my monitors is through a mixer but then I’m not to sure how to approach the sequencing/clocking/trigger
      Figured yea I need a sequencer but for some reason I cannot find anywhere about the proper way to hook up a mixer with multiple boutiques + an individual sequencer
      Either a mixer or a midi controller should be the route from my understanding
      And I do own ableton, but as I stand right now I just like to jam out and want/need to build up my knowledge and practices better before I’ll record
      But yes I would consider recording down the line
      So in the future that may be a possibility but I am also ok with upgrading at that point
      I’m not tryna spend an arm and a leg here but I also don’t want to purchase crappy equipment

      @@Eco19 Cool instruments the TR-08, TR-09, TB-03 and SE-02! 👍 Depending on what you won't to do as music, I think that with these 4 instruments, you don't really need an external sequencer. You can use the integrated sequencer on each instrument 😉
      - AUDIO MIX:
      * The Mackie Mix12FX seems to be a nice little mixer with onboard EQ (for 4 channels) and some integrated effects!
      With this mixer, you'll need audio cables like these to connect your instruments to the mixer: www.thomann.de/fr/cordial_cfy_3_wpp.htm?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAnfmsBhDfARIsAM7MKi0rS0P4ZagS9M__31k1ehOzFsvK3-5GKls_Fe0MFJ1KyRXVSgNWea4aAm56EALw_wcB
      * And depending on your monitors/speakers, the appropriate audio cables from the mixer out to the speakers.
      * Do you have a sound card? It can act as an audio mixer too (actually that's what I do 😉)
      N.B. You don't need a mixer for the sequencer, as the sequencer only sends MIDI data (no audio sound coming from it). With those 4 instruments, I'm not sure you need a MIDI controller neither 😉

      Really just making electronic beats is my plan
      Ok if I can use their internal sequencers then how would I connect everything in order to clock and trigger them all together simply through a mixer??
      Would i send each midi out from each boutique into the mixer then route each boutique into each other through other ins/outs??
      Or would i chain all the boutiques then send the “master”(first in chain)boutique into the mixer??
      Or in this scenario should the last in the chain be sent into the mixer??
      I have an olllld budget dj mixer I’ve used to route through before but only ever managed to get 2 machines running on it(it’s pretty finicky and inconsistent and confusing)

    Awesome composition. How do you interface the Roland TR-6S to sync/ stop/start with the NDLR ?
    - with the clock out or with Midi channel 5 as per the NDLR doc ?
    I can't seem to get this going ..

      @2MinuteWarning  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks for your comment xPump! Is your TR-6S settings' SYNC/TEMPO TempoSync=AUTO and RxStartStop=ON for example? In this video as far as I remember, my DAW is the master clock and the NDLR and TR-6S are slaved to it. So there's no direct clock control from the NDLR to the TR-6S. But it should be able to work like this as the NDLR can act as the master clock 😉

      @@2MinuteWarning Hey !t thanks for the tips. I have a TR-8s and it may be related to the same TR-6 settings.
      (I have a daw but I am not using it (at this point in time) ...
      I was able to get it working yesterday insofar as the tempo on the NDLR now gets sent to the TR8s.. which is almost all I need.
      The NDLR provides immediate access to sonic territory that would take days to patch! Ive only had it for a few weeks - its awesome.
      Currently I send all the NDLR (4) voices into VCF's controlled by 16f sliders as well as sending the same voices to VCA's (also controlled by 16f sliders) to send on various delays, verbs and other effects.
      Today I parallel patched those same (4) NDLR voices into my new Patching Panda 'Punch MG' [(4) channel VCA] and used the TR-8s trigger out to a clock divider to trigger the 'Punch MG''s vca triggers ..that combined with its 'cross-channel mute groups' (essentially ducking x4) created amazing rhythmic variations.

    • @2MinuteWarning
      @2MinuteWarning  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thanks 👍 It's not really a "song mode" (as you can't easily program pattern changes etc.) but a "chord sequencer". You have 3 lanes where you can chain up to 6 different chords per lane. Then you can tell how many times you want each row to play. If you have a NDLR, you can get access to the chord sequencer with SHIFT+MENU, then clicking on ENCODER 1 😉

      @@tendingtropic7778 To be honest I've been looking lately to get a HAPAX or OXI-ONE! Still I think that the NDLR is different as you can't easily program in your own notes. You have 4 tracks, 1 dedicated to PADS, 1 to DRONE/BASS, 2 to MOTIFs (=sequences). So as soon as you start the NDLR, you will have a loop playing. It's then up to you to change the chords etc. Maybe you can think at it more more like 4 very powerful arpeggiators (even if it's way more than that 😉). There's a new sequencer called MIDICAKE ARP which seems to be quite inspired by the NDLR too if you haven't already checked it out.
      With the HAPAX and all its MIDI effects, maybe you can replicate somehow the NDLR. But the HAPAX (and OXI-ONE) can also be used more like a traditional sequencer too, which the NDLR cannot.

      @@2MinuteWarning I created a set of voltage modular 2 modules to send controls to the NDLR, and by extension enable every aspect of it to be driven by oscillators, knobs, sequencers, etc. Fun and games. Most recently, I have started using Stepic to control the NDLR, especially the chords and degrees, but also positions, track toggles, key changes, etc. It works extremely well, especially if you use polyrhythms on the stepic lanes to get *consistently* evolving tracks that still have structure. Once i set up that, I play along with a lead or tonal addition. So good!

      @@joesweeney6262 Wow very creative! Must have some very interesting sequences with this setup! I tried using the NDLR with my Keystep Pro, where I just sequenced simple notes on the KSP to change the chords on the NDLR, however I've been experiencing latency in the change of chords on the NDLR, so I finally decided to jump to the CHORD SEQUENCER of the NDLR instead for this track 😅
