- Meetings with Remarkable Men (book) is the second volume of the All and Everything trilogy written by the Greek-Armenian mystic G. I. Gurdjieff. A book of autobiography, it was originally published in 1963 and tells the tale of the young Gurdjieff growing up in a world torn between his unexplainable experiences and the developing modern sciences.
The book takes the form of Gurdjieff's reminiscences about various "remarkable men" that he has met, beginning with his father. They include the Armenian priest Pogossian; his friend Soloviev, Prince Lubovedsky, a Russian prince with metaphysical interests, and a couple of others.
In the course of describing these characters, Gurdjieff weaves their stories into the story of his own travels, and also into an overarching narrative which has them cooperate in locating spiritual texts and/or masters in various lands (mostly Central Asia). Gurdjieff calls this group the "Seekers of Truth".
Most of them do in fact find "truth" in the form of some suitable spiritual destiny. The underlying philosophy, especially as articulated in an appendix, amounts to the assertion that people generally live their lives asleep, are unconscious of themselves, and accordingly behave like machines, subject to outside causes and pressures. Also, one of the chief assessments of the novel is that the people of the past epochs lived in more suitable outer conditions and at higher inner levels than the people today. Many additional hidden harmonies are noted or alluded to.
Meetings with Remarkable Men (movie) is a 1979 British film directed by Peter Brook and based on the book of the same name. Shot on location in Afghanistan (except for dance sequences, which were filmed in England), it starred Terence Stamp, and Dragan Maksimovic as the adult G. I. Gurdjieff. Gjudiyeff knew that we as Human beings only are filled with nonsens. Our capacety to Explore the Human consionsness is the " Gold " . The biggest question. Who are you " in the one that still " Hunts " me ! I am not my body , I am not my thoughts & Emotions. There is something so deep unvail a " Higher Self " I know that for a fact with very unique experiences since I was a small boy . I believe many People has reach that " Point " of awarness & I am still in search. But then again this " Experience " is inside me it does not comes from the outside ! Few days ago I finished reading the book and today a friend told about the movie. Even as the book is such a juvel from the Master himself, the movie is made by others. It's nice to look, a peaceful visual happening opening the inner storyteller.

I had heard about this film when I was a kid and never saw it until now, nearly 40 years later. Fantastic art direction, dance and music. I don’t care if it’s ‘uncool’. Peter Brooke took a great leap making this film, to his credit.

I saw this movie many years ago. It had a deep effect on me. I end up by buying the movie. Now I can watch it whenever I want. They don’t make movies like this one anymore.
The book is a parable, just as so many other books and stories. Dervish Boga Edin is a symbol for One God (Bog Edin = God is One in Russian language). Prince Lubovetsky - the name Lubovedsky comes from the word "luboved", the one who is interested in everything (in Russian). I Mongolia, when they used stilts to "walk over the winds of sand" is the meaning of having higher consciousness to see clearly in life. Every time I read that book, something new unveils.

I remember the disappointment I felt in 1979 when the lights came up in the theater after witnessing this tepidly made film.
( I knew Gurdjieff's writings quite well by that point and as such, had been looking forward to an interesting, above-the-par film)
The late Peter Brook's recent re-edit of this, his film, only made matters much worse.
Other than the opening musical competition and the closing Movements sequence,
I found this film to be a resolute misfire and an unfortunate missed chance.
It often feels like the film plays a game of peekabo with its audience, never truly sure it wishes to be seen
And then it dangerously veers towards preciousness a serious copping-out motive which signals a lack of thoroughness
on the part of the makers of any esoterically oriented film.
Esoterically preoccupied films may indeed be the specific genre which is the most difficult to pull off with complete sincerity.
However, that reflects its exceptionally demanded rigors and does not allow for any form of slackness as an excuse.
Even with having re-watched it over the years and seeing other nuances emerge, as well as questionable deliberate distortions,
REMARKABLE remains essentially an extended magazine advertisement lacking gravity and at times falling flat on its own face.
Gurdjieff's extremely subtle text deserved and deserves better, and perhaps that will one day be remedied.
And I believe that attempt should be made and what a powerful film that COULD indeed be.
It seems a strange conundrum that the most successful of spiritually-oriented films seem to be made by filmmakers of next-to-no spiritual interest and/or overarching adherence to a Belief: think Piero Pasolini's THE GOSPEL of ST. MATTHEW, Roberto Rossellini's IL MESSIA and ACTS OF THE APOSTLES and the original cuts of Liliana Cavani's FRANCESCO and MILAREPA.
Perhaps, such creators have less conditioning and therefore more objectivity in presenting a particular psychology's Facts.
MILAREPA, in particular, should stand as a guide to any further adapters of REMARKABLE to keep things simple and reveal only what has thoroughly digested and integrated through the filmmaker's actual Understanding: in other words, only that which has been comprehensively earned. It appears Cavani wisely adheres only to what she has understood and (most importantly) in the way that she particularly understands while leaving other portions of the story out. She does the same with her presentation of Francis of Assisi. It is an honest view.
Too much of REMARKABLE feels "fudged" and then fatuously glazed with a near Hollywood-style mystique.
(At least, THE RAZOR'S EDGE (1946) humbly stayed within its own scale and is all the stronger and affecting for it)
And perhaps too, the adapters should not be part of the movement carrying the founder's name so they can respond directly without institutional agendas and step back from interpreting the book's message and the filmed adaptation's provisional way.
No response or interpretation can be ultimate but, it should be handled more responsibly than this.
However, thank you for posting the entire unedited original. It is certainly better than the befuddled, recent Director's Cut.
I agree you and it's like he said thinking in one language and translating in an other while in that other languages there is no cristalisation of the essence the movie is in Caucasian context for me is it more powerful because I smell the essence because I am one... in otherhand wat Peter Brook did is like watching small previews from some site.. If you want more press on it... I think it's fair enough ..
I never read the book, in fact, I had not heard of this film either. I recently listened to a selection of music from the movie soundtrack, and searched here for the film. I very much enjoyed it. The film's cinematography and music is meant to be experienced, without much thought. In that regard, it is a wonderful film. Too much thinking ruins the experience of the sublime aspect of it.

Huh I don't understand
I look at this all and the mechanics behind it all are bewilderingly unbelievable. How does one travel such distances on foot with so little provisions and where are earth do the fabrics , the clothes ,the wood, the building materials come from. Where are the thousands of laborers that would make any of this possible? I guess it’s all about and for a privileged class that is out of touch with reality.
I wish modern movies had music and dialogue of this quality. They mostly focus on special effects now.

Yes, I remember Ouspensky saying that Gurdjieff told him the story of the Yazidi boy who could not or would not escape from the circle that the children had drawn around him. Gurdjieff said “they have strange beliefs!”

I had never heard of this man Gurdjief. I think that Terence Stamp and Warren Mitchell were very interesting men. I can understand why they would be drawn to a part in this film.East End of London was a treasure trove off talent.The land itself is a story.
Fighting duels is such a ridiculous pastime. Vibration and notes go through your body , a good one is exquisite and a bad one is agony. To do that to a bird is barbaric 🕊️. I love Kangal dogs,real ones. They are unique. A room with people moving in synchronicity builds huge energy. Fascinating film.

it was Osho who gave me inspiration too for Gurdjieff, I spend many years sitting at his feed and listening to him, from the late 70s to the late 90s .... a 43 later now, I started to walk my own path .... but Lao Zhu and Gurdjieff are the people with whom I can alien myself easily ....

@Ken Able you can ofc learn, get inspired but the real experience comes from working on yourself. books can be inspirational or make you more thirsty. you can also check out yogananda's biography of a yogi. there are two living yogis like Sri M. one is sadhguru another is yogiraj gurunath siddhanath. it is important you go to a living master. a dead master like gurdjieff cannot help much.
you can also read complete works of vivekananda.
and patanjali yoga sutras.
maybe book of secrets by osho. he explains 112 meditation techniques in that book.
ouspensky wrote book about 4th way you might be interested in.
Ken Able I would recommend Ouspensky’s the psychology of man’s possible evolution which will give you an intellectual overview and basics of the psychological aspect of the work after that In search of the miraculous covers a lot of Gurdjieff work giving you some exercises and how to practically work on yourself. The book covers psychology, cosmology and the laws that governs man and how if someone is intelligent he would try to escape from some of these laws and how to use some of these laws to your advantage, mainly the law of three and the law of seven. Ouspensky teaching is intellectual and he speaks mainly to your intellectual center. The meat of this teaching as I have been told is in Gurdjieff writing, his trilogy All and everything must be read in order since it’s suppose to be the law of three, the first series is destructive, the second is constructive and the third is reconciling. It’s constructed in a way that if you read it in order and with all your being, it can show you what your current situation and what is possible for you.
FIRST SERIES To destroy, mercilessly and without any compromise whatever, in the mentation and feelings of the reader, the beliefs and views, by centuries rooted in him, about everything existing in the world. SECOND SERIES To acquaint the reader with the material required for a new creation and to prove the soundness and good quality of it.
THIRD SERIES To assist the arising, in the mentation and in the feelings of the reader, of a veritable, nonfantastic representation not of that illusory world which he now perceives, but of the world existing in reality.
About what Sylvius, he’s right books will not get you far. However, before getting a school I would recommend that you understand very will that you need it and that you understand your situation and that your will is too weak to bring any real change also the organism is so complex and for that you will need a teacher.

There is, in book form. The books he talks about are ones he has written, three in the main series I believe and many books that are written afterwards by his best students. Take a look at the book of this film by the same name and then after that I would take a look at, In Search of the Miraculous by Ouspensky.
The man in main role of grow-up Gurdjieff is Serbian actor Dragan Maksimovich. He was killed on the street by group of hooligans without any reason, few years ago, in Belgrade.

Dubious-in the extreme of " we", but 'we' are all mirrors for oneanother; hand wash hand, and occasionally real feeling is called out of its stable where it lives in shit and is fed on straw.

@@BryanKirch The problem is not one of not 'growing up' but of being able to grow 'into' oneself, which may be dependent as much on finding the right conditions as on mustering sufficient mental and physical discipline. How does this work in a body that is old or broken?
