I LOVED instrument training! It was the the most challenging and rewarding part of flight training. I did it long before GPS, and when I looked up after an hour's flight under the hood and saw a runway waiting I realized the magic of instrument flying.
haha, (Austin Approach) "you filming today?" Gotta love it when you're that well known to ATC
What a great way to spend your birthday, doing what you love with your Dad! Gold...
Thank you so much for all of your hard work in the sky's!
I am a 14 year pilot in training and I am being taught by my parents who work for United Airlines as a captain of a Boeing 747. We now have our own Skyhawks 172 and it flys great!
I hope to be as good a pilot as you someday!
Thanks for all of your hard work and for all of the videos!
Can we get an update
Happy Birthday! Have loved to watch your videos throughout my PPL training. You learn a lot from just watching more experienced pilots.
"Ay 991 you filming today?" awesome question from atc! xD
Love your videos Josh. You earned my subscription. Good luck on your way to CFI or multi if you are going for those.
I would say what I love more is the way you deal with haters.
Blue skies and tail winds.
Hi Mr Aviation, thank you for a wonderful film and great day to be flying with Dad.Love it
You're so lucky to have someone to safety pilot for you. I paid an instructor yesterday to go with me...I need to find someone.
Happy Birthday. Thanks for sharing.
I'm a 15 year old and my dad and I are getting our licenses this summer. I just wanted to say I got the Private Pilot Blueprint and it helped so much! Thank you!
Kind of funny; a little emotional watching this toward the end. Watching your dedication & commitment as a young man. You flying with your dad, and seeing a visible testimony that he worked hard at being a good father. Thinking I’d like to tell him “Good job...”. Then he patted you on the shoulder. Got a little misty. You tell him for me. He’s a good man.
Started my journey back into aviation last spring and I loved your channel from the beginning. Thanks your service to aviation Josh, and for being a good businessman.
Happy Birthday. Great job on that missed approach. You are more of a professional at 20 years of age that I was at 40. keep up the good work.
Thanks!
+MrAviation101 happy birthday josh
This video is fire. Thnak you so much, on day 6 of my IFR training. I will be doing all the radio calls today, this helped a lot. Can't wait to take my Dad flying when I become insturemnt rated too!
Thanks again.
Excellent camera work! Looks like GoPro! The x-plane Airfoil Labs 172 has Nav stack with Garmin 430/AP, very similar to your stack. Editing in some x-plane shots to complement your live videos would be excellent. Also, editing in the Appr plates at full resolution, low en-route, etc. I know. I know, lots of extra work! Keep in mind that most training videos, Jepp, King, Sportys are all dated. There is endless positive cash flow in royalties. They just keep on comin! Using Final Cut Pro allows some animation, chromakeying. Example fly a complete route in x-plane ( with Pilotedge ATC, including checklists, walkarounds etc) and then fly the same route live. There are some publishers out there that would be very interested! Good luck!
PS Try using your feet more in low chop to keep wings level and on GS. You seem a bit busy on the yoke. I could be completely wrong on this because it is hard to see your feet. This is a tip an old instructor gave me that really smoothed out my flying. Keep up the good work!
cool dad, cool son, nicely done!!! God bless you all. Loved it.
Happy Birthday, Josh! Great job on the missed aproach! Can't wait to start my PPLa in march, while watching you flying!
Happy B-Day! Hope you have THE BEST DAY EVER
Happy Birthday:) Fly safe!
Can't think of a better way to spend a birthday. Congratulations!
Hey Josh, Happy birthday!! you are such a inspiration to me you are the whole reason iv gotten in to aviation. I am only 13 but i hope to start my flight training in the next year or so. I love flying so much tho whether its in the sim or on a commercial aircraft. Iv never been in a general aviation plane tho because i live in NM so there is not many opportunists to fly in one but the one there are i cant afford. Thank you for making these videos your the reason why i want to become a pilot.
Happy Birthday dude! Keep up the awesome work! Huge fan!
HAPPY Birthday JOSH!! Thanks for continuing to post these amazing videos!
You probably red that already a few times, but Happy Birthday! Nice video as always, you really know how to make good videos. I inspired me to film my first big adventure as a pilot next autumn. If the result will be quarter as good, I will be happy.
Keep up your great work!
happy birthday josh !!!!
nice flight and all time happy landings ;)
Cool video Josh! I've passed my Private
Pilot Written Exam and have almost 10 hours so far. Your videos are great because they're entertaining and I learn from them!
"991 You filming today? Affirmative" haha That is awesome! goes to show you just how much we all like the videos! Happy Birthday!!
+Roger Swain Controller's likely thoughts: "Oh S***, gotta do things by the book again!"

Sorry should be nice video. Lol
+Randy Malin lol, now did that happen
+Matt Lowth damn phone auto correct.
Nicely done! And Happy Birthday Josh!
Practice approaches are always great fun, especially flying them right down to minimums! I enjoyed the video mate :-)
Really impressing and interesting! Good job!
Enjoy flying in Texas. :) In NJ today, the current metar shows 20G31 M10/M27 Peak wind gusts 35.
Happy Birthday !! :)
Happy birthday! :D
I learned to fly at San Marcos before it was class d. Good stuff
Very well done and educational. Thanks Josh.
Happy Birthday Josh!
Mint videos mate. Always look forward to them...
Your dad is so calm! Couldn’t imagine what it be like to fly with mine lol
Happy birthday! Keep up the good work!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOSH!
happy birthday! ! thanks for the videos!!!
Where do get all the money for fuel??? :) N-6395T (yes, I am being "smart!) Jealous, maybe? :)
My GA experience, 152's, 172's, etc., and Piper Arrows, etc., wreaked havoc with my "aircraft disposable income." :) No IFR rating - maybe that save me "some coinage!"
Your videos are very well done - you are to be commended (and your Dad, also) on your inherent abilities. Thanks
Awesome vide. Very useful and . U are famous man, atc knows u! Ha. Again great video
Josh belated " Belated Happy Birthday " Many happy birthday in the future. Always enjoy flying along with you in your great flying videos. Do you ever go flying alone?
pat on the shoulder."good job".. priceless
Sounds like y’all have some great controllers down in the San Marcus area!
Hi Josh. I've been watching your videos for a while now, great job on them and happy birthday! Do you ever plan on getting some wheel pants and/or a power flow exhaust on that baby? Keep up the good work!
Btw, Happy bday Josh!
Now I really don’t feel so bad when I have to do my IPC because you have proved to the fact that he can get so busy when you’re not on a long cross country to be able to brief an approach and get all the flying done. Like I said it is always like trying to text and drive yet the FAA wants you to be able to brief an approach when you have to be concentrating on what you’re doing plus what ATC might interject very quickly.
When his dad said "we are headed right for that antenna", you could tell he wanted to be like " dad, I know that!!"
Having had two parents with pronounced West Virginia accents, I'm always amazed how your Dad has that thick Texas drawl and you sound like any ordinary news reader, Josh. I don't know how that happens. Interesting.
It's probably because I travel a lot!
Great job, looks a great future for you
Happy Birthday!
happy birthday!!
Happy Birthday Josh. Got around to installing the autopilot? Happy Flying!
and its looking nice in texas where here theres a little bit of wind low clouds visibility is reduced temps are not ideal and its snowing and the roads there slippery and partially covered
Happy Birthday
happy birthday!
That's great, that's my next will practicing on, what's your advices?
happy birthday m8
Very thorough.
HEY JOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hey buddy happy birthday love your video and when I fly with you I am wondering if you can explain to me what Zulu time is thanks because I am only used to the time that I read the current local time is 1:22 pm CDT
Nice job!
Very helpful video. Thanks!!!
I'm changing the N number of my bird to 80992 : )
"niner-niner-one ... are you filming today?" :)
I enjoy watching your videos thx.. Brew
I like his back to the future shirt xD
YES! Someone noticed! Haha
+MrAviation101 too good to go unnoticed :D you're my role model pilot and I wish to be like you 👍
Thank you for all the hard work filming and sharing this valuable IFR practice. Great way to start your birthday! Love your watch. What make/model is that?
+Jeff Christensen registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNum_Results.aspx?NNumbertxt=80991
+Bartosz Dotryw What make/model is the watch?
+Jeff Christensen Timex Expedition
I love this channel. I am looking into flight lessons myself. Any tips?
Thanks for the video! I was wondering where your definition of "established on approach" came from? I've always considered "established" when your on course or within 1/2 scale, sounds a little nit picky but I think in certain places you could still be a ways off when the needle starts to move
happy birthday
Nice video!
Nice Job.
Great video as always :)
Hey Josh, how often do you take N80991 up in the air? Do you film all of your flights or do you only film a handful?
And happy birthday :)
He told a friend in some other video at least once a week.
+Peter Ellison oh ok, thanks man
+Peter Ellison what did he say? Or what video...? Lol
+John Armstrong it was a video of him with some other guys in his 172 and they asked him what you were wondering, i can't find it
Good job.
okay so you might not know how to calm down a nervous flyer on takeoff but here is how first start by getting the child's attention by saying their name and then once you have their attention tell them that the takeoff will be over before they know it and tell them that its going to be okay just relax breath and calm then tell them its going own and when you start to do your turn that's another spot that they will get nervous about so then tell them that it will feel weird for a couple of seconds but it will go away and tell them that hey you can hold my hand if you need to
The yoke seems like such a struggle @ lower altitudes , is the rudder the same way?
and josh since you've caught so many pictures of Texas at night and day I will try and capture photos of my side of town from day and night photos
Love your videos man. I'm getting much better with ILS, LOC, and VOR instrument approaches, but I'm not so great with RNAV's. Does an RNAV approach provide vertical glideslope guidance? or only localizer type horizontal guidance?
It does. And it often also simulates the needles getting more sensitive as you approach the runway just like a traditional ILS would do.
If youre still looking for an answer it depends.. if the aircraft is or isnt waas equipped.
Well done !!
Hey josh, I'd love it if you found a way to sign up and fly with the blue angels... I'd love to see that. :)
Nice video and approach. I noticed your dad has a large ring on his hand, is he by chance a Naval Academy graduate? Thanks.
ya dad must be pretty proud you can fly these approaches accurately. Is he a pilot too?
Once establushed on loc and GS, what are your target pitch and power settings? Flaps look to be zero. What are your target IAS, FPM descent rate? You are very articulate on ur ATC comm. Nice!
Nice flying . Where's Brooke ?
he was on stage now after he knew you are filming
Show us about your autopilot in the C172. I'm old and have never seen one in a 172.
Great job! I enjoy watching just to brush up on my approaches. What is the purpose of having your iPad upside down? Thanks!
Easier to plug in?
+WhiteLinesBlueSkies If the iPad mini was right side up, the clip at the bottom would cover up the home button.
One day, I will get a pat on the shoulder from my CFII... but not today...
Nice video! Fly safe! ;-)
Dear Lord God, thank you for the time I had with my Dad in my life. 🙏👍🇺🇸🚁 I miss him very much, but I know he's with you now Lord Jesus. Amen.
Great video and flight Josh. Happy Birthday :)
I was wondering what brand is your watch or where did you buy it from, I noticed it when you had the side cam angle and really liked it.
It's a timer Expedition, and I ordered it off amazon. It has an analog clock (I set to local time) and a digital clock (I set to Zulu time). I love flying with it!
MrAviation101 I will check it out, thanks!
awesome Vid
is there a difference between saying "I have the controls" or "my airplane"?
Matheus Abreu same thing/same intent, but the important part is to verbally and visually acknowledge that the other person does indeed have the controls.
Did you ever think that six years later, you'd have that altitude hold?
