Hot water freezes faster than cold water?

  • Experiment showing that hot water freezes faster than cold water under certain circumstances. What the video does not show is that it was -25 c that day. No video trickery. Just a pot of room temperature water and a pot of boiling water thrown into the cold air. The hot water forms ice crystals immediately and mostly goes up in smoke with little hitting the ground as oppose to the cold water which just dumps in the snow. This phenomenon is not well understood by scientist yet.

    This phenomenon is quite easily explainable. Hot water has lower viscosity and dissipates into vapour much more readily, which flash freezes in the cold outside air. On the other hand, cold water doesn't make many droplets that are small enough to freeze that fast.

      @@user-dx6zc2nf7h it's true. the concept looked like it can be done interchangeably but it doesn't work like that.
      iirc from my 8th grade science class, the reason why cold water does not boil faster than hot water or room temperature water is that
      >there are more molecules of water the colder they are
      >since the molecules lack the heat needed to boil, you would need to actually supply them first with energy to make the cold water's molecules gain kinetic energy and start evaporating(boiling)

    Hot water has lower viscosity (hence why pouring a cup of hot tea or coffee sounds distinctly different than pouring a cup of cold water). I'd imagine that might make the water break up into a mist easier, exposing it to more cold air. I'd be surprised if the effect was the same if you just stuck the pot outside (since hot water has to become the same temperature of cold water before it freezes). As others have said, the heat from the water may also be condensing water vapour around it, giving the effect that a freezing effect is happening when the reverse is happening too.

    • @bigguy7353
      @bigguy7353 Před rokem +31

      I just poured a cup of hot and cold water. There was no distinct difference in the sound, as 33 degree water and 211 degree water is not a huge difference in density. Not sure what you're talking about.

      Hot water freezes faster in ice cube trays.

    • @Simqer
      @Simqer Před rokem +11

      I believe that it uses the same principle of when you cool down using sweat.
      Some parts of the hot water will use up energy in the other parts to become gas in the cold air that is very dry. The remaining water that loses the energy instead condenses into ice and falls to the ground.
      The room temperature doesn't have enough energy for there to be enough vaporization and so the water remains as liquid when it falls to the ground.
      That's my theory at least.

      The molecules in hot water move much faster than in cold water.
      As soon as hot water is thrown into a very cold environment (like, in this video, a snowy backyard), the water starts to freeze but because of the fast-moving molecules, the cold is distributed throughout the water much faster and all the water freezes quickly.
      On the other hand, cold does not spread throughout the cold water as quickly because of its slow-moving molecules and hence, it freezes slowly.

    • @isaiahjohnson9905
      @isaiahjohnson9905 Před 3 lety +45

      So the hot water gets put into a cold environment, it loses it's heat energy to the environment. The steam represents the lost energy of the water, it's not that it freezes faster, but rather that it has lost much more energy than the cold water gave up when entering the environment. Very similar thing happens to vapors (such as hot breath) when entering cold environments, which is why it's much easier to see the breath when it's very cold :)

    i think it's because when the water is in free fall under no container pressure from gravity, it is free to expand according to it's temperature, and it can do that at the microscopic level, allowing the frozen air in everywhere around each molecule. the hot water would be much better at this if true because of the kinetic energy difference in each molecule on average. it expands more quickly, so it shares its volume with much colder air sooner than the cold water, facilitating rapid freezing.

      @@TheNoiseySpectator water expands when freezing because of the chemical structure of water, H2O, being able to form a kind of bond called hydrogen bonds, creating a structure when it's frozen that's less dense than liquid water, expanding it

      Nah, its evaporation in cold dry air. Evaporation takes a shit load of energy, so as soon as you throw that boiling hot water into the air and massively increase its surface area much of it instantly evaporates taking most of the heat energy with it. Also, water expands when its heated like everything else, its just that as said above me it crystallizes into a less dense structure than liquid water.

    Actually, there's a simple answer for this phenomenon. See, if any liquid is to vaporize, it needs energy for that conversion. Since energy cannot be created nor destroyed (according to Newton's 1st law of thermodynamics), it takes energy from the surrounding heat to vaporize.
    So, what you're watching is cold water not wanting to vaporize because there isn't as much as a temp differential. No vaporization means no rapid absorption of heat, therefore just falling into the snow to freeze at a lower rate despite it being colder. The hot water, on the other hand, is much more prone to vaporize because of the temp differential. And when it's surface area is increased (aka when the water is thrown up in the air), the water rapidly vaporizes and absorbs the surrounding heat in addition to the cold air, causing it to freeze quicker.

    SIMPLE: Hot water molecules move fastetr. Therefore they can collide into each other quicker. Now when exposed to such extreme low temperatures lose thermal energy quickly. And since they collide into each other at a fast rate. By the time the water molecules are disresed into the environment. The collisions already allow it to garner up into ice.
