- Today reggaeton superstar J Balvin welcomes Architectural Digest for a tour of his tranquil Colombian home. Medellín-based design firm 5 Sólidos completely gutted the existing structure, reimagining the space as a serene, understated pavilion. Elements like blackened wood siding and shoji-like framed linen doors and screens point to the influence of Japanese aesthetics. Warm planes of French oak wrap the interiors, coupled with an array of pared-down modern furnishings. In fact, the palette is only interrupted by an eruption of color in J Balvin’s closet, where about 850 pairs of sneakers are displayed in what could pass for the world’s dopest shoe museum.

Well I have to disagree about that. The set of values conveyed by Japanese culture and this type of housing is less disturbing than French Renaissance castles filled with fake royalty / aristocracy. If he subscribes to the whole Japanese vibe and aesthetic, good for him.

a lot of rich people are so tacky and they get 'minimalist'/ultra-modern art and architecture because they think it makes them look classy, but it just makes their homes look cold and lifeless. he really understands minimalism and he understands how to make a home warm yet classy and modern at the same time without all of it being in your face. i like it.

Not really. J balvin does more than just reggaeton. He shows a whole culture and embraces it and he squeezes all of the beauty of Latin community. He is very into our culture and loves it passionately. If you pay enough attention to his music and style you notice he makes art. When he was young he was part of the culture but j balvin grew to understand his own culture and take the beauty of it, work from it from a very artistic view. He is amazing.

As someone who lived in Japan for over 10yrs, finally a Japanese inspired house that actually gives you a feeling of Japan. Most of the time when I see "Japanese inspired", it normally means a postmodern style house with a bonsai tree & some "Japanese" art.
Some may have not noticed but the two big dogs are Akita! also from Asian culture, everything from the house to the plants to the dogs and even his attitude is paying homage to the Japanese culture. This video gave me a new respect for him.

I'm girl and was thinking of doing something similar if I ever could afford, I'm Brazilian though, love Japanese food, yoga, meditation, I like stylish and humble though, I'd add some flowers and an entire spot for growing food myself because I like fresh raw natural, a spot to read books, also a spot to come home and roll on floor relaxing like what I saw in a Japanese serie. I also don't watch TV for over 20 years now I think. I abandoned it before everyone did in my country. I love the European Victorian too, Harajuku stuff but I end up choosing place to relax. But I love movies...I'd prob have a huge screen to share with friends. I got rid of many shoes and clothings, I still think I have too much, but I thought other people would feel happier wearing them because although I loved them, I wasn't able to use them all, It honestly was the best choice...I love drinking tea and having nice different meals so prob kitchen would be nice, but bathroom would be super relaxing. But I never want to stay alone....Don't want a too big house, but necessary space to workout and maybe do some taichi training and other stuff that are healthy, friends could join! I also prefer in the nature, but I'd have a tiny starbucks cafe to make matcha frapuccino cause it's my favorite drink, haha!
Right now I'm still super poor, I eat on Japanese bowl and don't use fork for the past...11 years? I got bamboo hashi. I can't own animals but wanted to adopt some to make me company. I wish best friends could always come home though...to laugh together...my entire life...I live only by myself, can't picture too big room without friends. I was reluctant to like him and his work but I can see his beautiful, stoic personality thriving in this house. It’s so relaxing and cheerful to be or see his home. Who wouldn’t be impressed? It’s somewhere to just enjoy life and be easy. Thank you for sharing this. My soul felt balanced watching this video. It’s chill but FAR from boring. His house is to inspire not just emotional balance but meaningful interactions. Awareness of you, your surroundings and of others, as opposed to always trying to escape reality like much of the media tries to do nowadays.

this is genuinely how I want my home to be; the black, the Japanese aesthetic, and how spacious everything is! I would modernize it so that it isn't too simply and add pictures, more cabinets and such for shoes and clothes, and have a handful of things on the kitchen like espresso machines, toaster, just some kitchen essentials. I would love to have a home or even an apartment like this styled to for my liking and add a few things but I love this and I did not expect this from someone like j balvin

I feel like most Latinos say it. In México if i where to mention "my house" i'd "your house" cuz its an invitation and a mention "my house is your house".
This is the only Open Door that actually shows architecture. Every other video is a museum with eclectic belongings owned by a superstar, but this, like Jose says "The whole place is basically a piece of art". He gets it.

I studyied 1 year architecture and i can look somethings basic concepts about the modern architecture like the natural light,the concept of huella (sorry i don't know like write it in english) but this concept wasn't made for kim this concept architecture was made for mies van der rohe like 80 years ago,and he inspirated in the chinese and japan architecture too
Not a fan, this is just my objective opinion:
I suppose the West minimalist look isn't thattt minimalistic, but you gotta keep in my mind that they got a lot of kids and need their home to cater to the needs of their children. JBalvin is an adult, he doesn't need toys rooms or extra specifically sectioned cabinets to separate food groups and stuff like that. So yeah, keep that in mind. Personally, given the lavish lifestyle the West's used to live, and can choose to live, their now minimalist look is extremely impressive.

It’s always beautiful to see someone describing their home not house. You can tell there was a specific vision J Balvin had for his home and much props to the designers that made it possible. I can see so much beautiful detailing and attention to proportion that is hard to find in todays fast paced flashy world.
This might be the coolest house I've seen, everything about it. Integrated with nature, relaxation. Better than a huge flashy mansion. Most of all I like the windows with views of shrubs, plants and forest up close over the usual lawn and view. This guy really has his head right, and knows how to live very humble.

I'm japanese. And I love this house.
From a Japanese perspective, the house looks like modern Japanese architecture. There are more traditional Japanese houses, but those houses are not livable in today's world. His house is modern architecture inspired by the West, but every part of the design is wonderfully Japanese. This house is definitely a "Japanese house. I would like to live there too. I envy him.
