Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid FAQ’s: What You Need To Know (from an almost 2yr owner)

  • I wanted to do a review where I explain how the hybrid works and give my first hand experience with the vehicle. There has been an uptick in negative press about hybrid vehicles, including costs and the "must-haves" that quite simply aren't true. I know that the regular person reading those articles may be completely turned off to the idea of hybrid vehicles after reading them, which is frustrating seeing how much we've loved and benefitted from our hybrid van.
    I was also frustrated when in the market for a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) because the knowledge of the vehicle from the dealerships was incorrect and almost non-existent. Many salesmen deflected to another to explain and answer our questions, and when answered we later found out they were false. There were general questions about the display and what was being shown that I had while test driving, and the dealer did not know the answers. Most of my knowledge from the vehicle has come from reading the instruction manual and by first hand experience.
    While there are videos about this hybrid van out there, I felt they didn't answer my basic questions about everyday and practical use of the vehicle. I hope to have answered some of those questions for you here. I hope you'll give a watch and listen with how our experience has been so that you can make a more informed decision.
    I will do a separate video where I highlight and go through some of the features of the van that we've been enjoying. This van was by far the most advanced in technology and features versus the competitor 2020 minivan models (Siennas and Odysseys). At the time, the Odyssey was recalled for a fire hazard and we weren't allowed to even turn it on (they were pulled from the lot). The Pacifica had MUCH more cabin space than the Odyssey. It also had WAY more features and up to date technology and aesthetic than the 2020 Sienna (I must note this was the year before the remodel of the Sienna, which I have to say was long overdue. We previously owned a 2007). This was our first new car purchase, and I really can't sing its praises enough.
    Comment with any questions you may have. I'll do my best to answer them.
    Give this video a like if it helps! That's my goal. This is not sponsored. This is a real person trying to help real people.

    Thanks for your review, I agree with your comments. I have slightly more that 17k miles on my 2021 Pacifica, roughly 10.6k on electric and 6.5k using gasoline. At my current electric rate it costs about 3.5 cents/mile vs an average of 14 cents/mile for gas (avg cost per gallon-$3.11). Even when the battery is totally depleted, I get about 15% additional use from regenerative braking. I installed a level 2 charger in my garage and plug in every time I get home so that I always start out with maximum range. It takes slightly more than 2 hrs for full charge from empty. I wish there was an option to add battery capacity but I'm satisfied with the current 30-35 mile range. With the gas engine backup I don't need to be concerned about being stranded like a full EV would be.

    Great review, I’ve had my 2021 Pacifica Hybrid for just over a year and love it, especially love rarely buying gas! Just went on a 1,400 vacation road-trip and averaged 34.4 mpg. Only thing I’d add to your video is that up north here in the winter, it’ll default to gas right away to use the engine heat to heat the cabin and batteries.

      Could you elaborate on the engine starting in winter. Any specifics temp ect? If we left the van in the garage would it still start shortly after driving in winter? Our Volt has a defer setting which I use to make it not start engine until below about minus 20 celsius

    • @lukedornon960
      @lukedornon960 Před rokem +1

      @@TheSimplecanadianIn my experience it will fire up the engine any time the climate control is running and external temperature falls below 32, but only long enough to warm up the engine/battery then it will switch back. Turning heat to max can raise that temperature threshold and in sufficiently cold weather (roughly sub-zero) it will use the engine to heat the battery no matter what.

    3 questions:
    1. Is it cheaper to charge it with electricity than getting gas?
    2. I know electricity prices vary per location, but how much do you spend monthly on electricity to charge your minivan (average)?
    2. How does the vehicle perform in very cold weather? I’ve heard comments of electric vehicles getting stranded during days with freezing temperatures. Or does the gas mode kick in during cold days?

      There’s almost no times when you’d want to use the L drive state. All it does is force your car to automatically use the highest level of regen braking before your actual brakes are engaged. If used in standard driving it will make your efficiency much less because of physics, where an object in motion wants to remain in motion.
      Coasting is far more efficient for your vehicle than regenerative braking is.
      When your foot is off the gas, the regenerative braking is already at work, and there is a threshold of how hard you can step on the brakes dedicated to recharging vs using your actual brake rotors and pads.
      If you’re driving down a really steep mountain or hill, maybe give L a go. Other than that, use the regular brake and try not to brake too hard, and coast your way to excellent driving efficiency.

    The Pacifica Hybrid doesnt have electric heating for the big battery, it pulls heat from the coolant system to keep the cells in working range. Consequently, in sub-freezing temps, the engine will ALWAYS have to turn on. In principal this could be seen as an admirable simplification (it eliminates electric battery heaters) but I think in practise it creates a rats nest of pumps, solenoid valves and plastic tubing, while preventing the vehicle from operating as an all electric for short trips in winter. It gives me concerns about long term reliability and repairability. Apparently there are three separate "cooling" systems, all needing to coordinate with each other and all plumbed in and around the other systems.

    Quick question, we just rented one of these on vacation and loved it. I noticed you have roughly 22,000 miles on the van, is there a way to see how many of those miles are from the engine and how many are from the electric side? I know when I shut it off after a drive, it would show how many miles during that ride were either electric or gas.

    • @theplantbasedcajun
      @theplantbasedcajun  Před 10 měsíci

      As far as I know, you only see the miles allocated in 2 places:
      1. The energy history tab that I show in the video, which only stores 2 weeks at a time.
      2. The trip miles counter on the dash board.
      There may be another way to fully tell, and I would imagine with how advanced the vehicle is there is a way. I'm not sure of it though. My guess is the mechanics who work on the vehicle would need to know the miles allocated on the engine and from what modes, so they may have a computing device they use to hook up to the engine computer. I've never had to bring the van into the shop yet, so I haven't experienced that. Just an educated guess.

      Oh good question! If i remember right, when we bought the van they told us the battery lasts a couple of years and that it had to be replaced by e hybrid trained technicians. In general the conclusion was any PHEV tech work would need to be done by Chrysler specialty centers. If I remember right, Chrysler provides a rental vehicle while they do maintenance due to the inconvenience of only having a few hybrid maintenance locations. We haven’t had to have any maintenance yet, so I can’t speak from experience at this point. I can update when we do have to have it serviced though!

    • @theplantbasedcajun
      @theplantbasedcajun  Před rokem +1

      When the plug-in battery charge is depleted, the car uses the hybrid engine (which uses gasoline and battery charge) to continue driving.
      If you plug the van in to charge, the van starts off using all the electric energy first, then goes into the hybrid mode of using gas-electric. There is no "gasoline energy only" option as this van has a hybrid engine.
      If you wanted to buy the van and not use the electric charging (you don't want to plug it in), you can do that and drive the van like a normal van, filling up with gasoline as needed. But your dashboard will always show the battery energy and the gasoline energy because it is a hybrid van with a hybrid engine -- it will show what is going on in the engine, which is the use of both gasoline energy and electric energy that's being generated by regenerative braking.
      I hope I answered your question!

    • @CXINsoft
      @CXINsoft Před 9 měsíci

      The van has regenerative braking, which means regains some electricity from braking. How much electricity you gain from braking depends on the duration and hardness of the brake. From my personal experience, the most % I gained during one brake was 3% of battery life, but that is rare. Anyway, so, unless you are driving on a highway without releasing the gas pedal, the van will always find its way to regenerate some of the juice from friction.
      The van has two batteries, one is hybrid battery, the other is 12v regular car battery. During charging the hybrid battery, the 12v regular car battery also gets charged, this is a win for winter season in my book. MPG wise, if you drive the van pure on hybrid battery, I did it once for 6 months straight, MPG can be 60+, cause you never touch the gas, the meter calculating the MPG is off. If you drive the van like a normal hybrid car not pure EV, the eMPG is around 35 more or less depends on your over all load and driving habbit.

    I've owned a 2023 for 8 months now and my wife nearly drains the battery daily with her work commute, so that's close to 16 kWh per day for around 20 days each month, which is 320 kWh. For me, where my electric rate is $0.30 per kWh (highest in the US other than Hawaii), that would be an additional $96 on my electric bill, if not for the solar panels on my house, and actually more costly than gas for the same mileage. The solar panels are a no-brainer in my area if living in the same house for more than about 8 to 10 years.

My 3 mile commute takes 8-10% without the heater, more than 20% with the heater. In humid Oregon the window defroster is pretty much a requirement when it's cold. This is an important distinction - you still qualify for the entire credit even if you’ve had appropriate withholdings made through your employer.
    It means that most single people making about 70K or more and most joint filers making 90K or more (gross) will qualify for the full credit. It will come back to you in a check during refund season.

    Hi. I highly, highly recommend that you drive this van every so often in gas mode as well. You stated that you hardly put gas in your van maybe six months or so is a big mistake! You have to remember, this vehicle still has a gasoline combustion engine and there is oil in that engine. Therefore, if the gas mode is not operating often then that means the oil is not flowing in the engine. Down the road, your engine can seize as a result. Remember, this a a Hybrid, not a Tesla.

      Clarification: I do put gasoline in the vehicle.
      It took 6 months to use the entire tank with my commutes. The engine ran as a hybrid engine, defaulting to whichever setting it's programmed to do on it's own -- the driver has no control over that.
      So when I said "I hardly buy gas," that is correct, and it is not a reflection of me not using the vehicle properly or how it's meant to be operated. I understand now how the statement could be misleading though.
