To the 'Pinnacles' of Borneo--in a monsoon!!

  • We were told the weather in the jungles of Borneo is “unpredictable”; but we didn’t understand the real impact of this statement just yet. We had flown here on a mission to summit the iconic 'Pinnacles' hike of Mulu National Park: one of the most vertical and intense hikes in the subcontinent. The journey requires a longboat ride up a narrow river; a 9-km jungle trek in which we had to carry our own overnight gear, food, and water; a brief night’s rest at a primitive campsite; and finally, an exhausting 1.2-km vertical ascent over just 2.4 kilometers' distance.
During a tropical deluge, we navigated through rapids and around whirlpools, while dodging free-floating deadfall-downed tree trunks, which shot like javelins past our small wooden boat as we powered upstream. Proceeding with a scheduled stop at the beautiful Clearwater and Wind Caves prior to the main trailhead, our cave guide scratched his head and commented, “Wow, I’ve never seen this much water rushing into the cave!” An ominous beginning to one of the most precarious journeys of our lives, one which our phone camera just doesn't do justice to.
We are Lan & Eric, two front-line clinicians who chose to hit "pause" on our medical careers to live out our dream of traveling all seven continents. Our videos coincide with our photo-journal, explorerswithoutborders.com/, where we have tried to record the many lessons, perspectives and inspiration we have found along the way.
