  • Today we're looking at perhaps one of Doncaster's most important towns. The borough has a few parishes that are classified as such, having a TOWN council rather than a parish council but I don't think any of them are quite as important as this one, and strangely, this is one of the smallest towns you'll find in South Yorkshire.
The importance of this place dates back to the 1100s when it was a vital port on the River Idle. Whilst the port may no longer exist, through the ages the town has served as a point on the map that people have used as a major reference, being ideally located at a crossroads between the East Midlands towns of Newark, Retford and Gainsborough, and the South Yorkshire towns of Rotherham and Doncaster. Without this place, the area around would not be what it is today.
The Market Place, or the main square as it's sometimes called, houses many an interesting building, including the gorgeous Town Hall, the luxurious Crown Hotel and the Dower House, and that's before we even consider the Hall, built by a Wakefield wool merchant and used as a popular wedding venue.
You're not short of iconic landmarks either. The viaduct carries the East Coast Main Line on it's way to London, there's the beautiful Methodist Church on the junction of Station Road, there's The Courtyard, an award winning shopping precinct and arguably one of the most famed houses in all of Yorkshire - Number One.
Far too much to include everything in one video, but the heritage trail information board condenses it down and made that little bit easier for me to have a go at the town of BAWTRY.

I have lived in Bawtry for 6 years now. It's a lovely small town full of character and history dating back to Roman times. St Nicholas Church has many interesting features inside and out and there are long ago filled-in smuggler tunnels between Wharf Street and the workhouse you featured. Somewhere in the area is also the long-lost battlefield where Anglo-Saxon king Aethelfrith was defeated by Raedwald, king of East Anglia in AD 616. Nobody knows exactly where this took place and the site has long been searched for but never found.

I assume you know your in a pilgrim fathers meeting place in Bawtry and they would meet up there to travel on to Gainsborough hall and im told would often preach from those stone crosses in Bawtry while waiting for each other and Bawtry is in fact the place they escaped religious persecution from by sailing by barge from Bawtry up the idle and then Trent up to immingham and onto a ship to holland it was there second attempt as there first one was to board a ship to holland in boston lincs but they were caught locked up then released and had to walk back home to Bawtry .also you mentioned hanging in those days the locals were hanged just outside Bawtry town on gibbet hill lane there is a list somewhere of all those who were hung there .

Trouble is there's way too much in the town centre, video would've been an hour or more if I'd attempted everything. I think I got all the main bits, to be fair

Bawtry has a special place in my heart, at 17yrs old (not old enough to drink) I was one of the RAF Policemen there. A regular part of my nightshift was to cycle patrol through the base and out around the perimeter through the village to various married quarter sites. RAF Bawtry was quite a important communications link. However a few months later I turned 18 and now have a love hate relationship with yorkshire beer.
