- This is The Monte in its final form. What started as a small idea took me to Penn & Teller Fool Us and finally to the world stage, where it took 3rd place at FISM, the World Championships of Magic. At the table are Shawn Farquhar (FISM Grand Prix Winner) and Nina Strochlic (National Geographic.)

@@ShawnFarquhar 😆yeah, Erik was rad the one time I’ve met him. Tagged along with some of my old fire/ sideshow partners who were on a bill with him at bossy grrls pinup joint in Columbus OH.
@@ShawnFarquhar has this annoying habit of being a really good spectator for magic. He just keeps smiling and having fun. Also, he’ll tell you later that you did a good job and mention the things he likes about your act and you personally. It’s like he actively wants to be your friend. What a monster.

“I don’t think anyone in this room is keeping score today” - said whilst looking Shawn Farqhuar dead in the eyes as he’s there as a judge literally keeping score to me was the most brilliant bit of performance at FISM I’ve seen so far.
Following it up with the french guy comment referring to Markobi’s chaotic performance was also a delight.

4:45 That smile and chuckle from Shawn brings me joy. He's both a judge and FISM winner. He knows cards and sleight of hand. But it looks like that reaction stems from him genuinely having not seen you load the card. For just a second, he went from judge to delighted spectator.
I do magic, but I rarely do magic for magicians, just out of paranoia of looking like a goober. But if that kind of reaction is what is there, I need to start.
The initial snap deal and vanish of the three cards was SOO CLEAN

Wow!!! Having watched you do this act a few times, I’m amazed on how you continually elevated this trick! I thought your Penn and Teller presentation was so phenomenal, and the subsequent ones were such improvements on perfection, but your FISM presentation was truly a world class presentation! Well deserved recognition of your awesome talent and hard work!

I really enjoy the Penguin podcast. Thanks for doing it. I am learning with my 12 yr old son. He is wanting to start doing birthdays, etc. I get nervous doing it for family and friends. I would love to get to Columbus to a show sometime. We are in a bit of 'magic desert' in very Southern Illinois; 4 hours to Brent Braun's, 5 to Branson. Ickle Pickle isn't too far, but haven't gotten there yet. Keep up the good work. And congratulations on FISM!

Imagine doing close up magic at FISM, while Shawn Farquhar is sat next to you burning your hands haha. I’ll be honest, I followed most the routine, but the presentation was superb, the sleights were fantastic and all while being very funny.
I am magician and i crazy about the monte tricks. And you add something to this category of trick. You add an very good presentation and original effect. It's not just "Find the queen" ! All the effect of this trick is justified and execute with a method i'd never seen before. And a final with 3 clear card is just... beautyful !

I am only fourteen, and this will be my first magic convention. I tried out for the junior close up contest and I was accepted, and I will be honored of you would come to watch it.
