  • It is often times too easy to fall victim to unsophisticated and emotional, stereotypical thinking. Labeling oppressors white, making over generalizations such as color "The White Man" and "The Black Man" and "White Society" is not accurate for what should be obvious reasons. When listening to this speech, try to disseminate the color coding. Just short of being color blind, we must realize that people are people, flesh and bone. The major problem with low-brow propagandic labeling is that it distorts reality and as propaganda, it unfortunately works.
'I am black ... but I am a human being!' Value your humanity, not your color!
"We are a nation of thieves" Who brought slavery to America? (Brittan? The Dutch? entrepreneurs/capitalists?) And it by no means started with 'black' people, but lets not play the blame game
    Who supported the "Underground Railroad?"
Who fought to keep slavery? (Rich plantation owners in the south who relied on the cheap labor and profits from 'growing' and selling slaves? The nation whose profits/infrastructure stemmed largely from the exploitation of slaves? racists/separatists - assassination of Lincoln?)
    Who fought to abolish slavery?
To remove poverty you must remove its root; money and greed breed poverty and more money is not the answer. Destroy monetary systems - Communism? redistribution of wealth - Huey Long?, education!
Why were/are humans with dark skin considered to be less then a person? (propaganda? - just think what advertising is designed to do - capitalistic philosophies? classism in a predominantly white ruling class?)
"This nation can not justify any-longer its existence, we have become the policemen of the world!"
"it is we who are the hardest workers, and the lowest paid..." Here he is perhaps glazing over the plight of the Irish, 'Native' Americans, Jews, low-class white Americans, Chinese, and many others who have been exploited.
"This country is not God and it can not rule the world!"
"Who has power?, who has the power to make their acts legitimate?"
"We have to begin to develop a political sophistication! do not be a parrot!; the two party system is the best system."
"We must question the values of this society! and I maintain that black people are the best people to do that." (How can skin-color qualify someone for sociopolitical/philosophical thought?)
"American students are perhaps the most politically unsophisticated students in the world!" Perhaps this is true but the problem is almost entirely found in the lower classes.
He makes an excellent point 40:00 about a little know method of exploitation and touches on the bias publication of news for the benefit of the producers and the affiliations of those producers.
'We have to admit that most people in this country see things as black and white, we live in a country that's geared that way.' I hate to admit that he is right but. We must change that! It also stands to reason that he himself is a product of his time and was influenced by the dominating ideals of the 1960s.
There are many 'black' people who are afraid to go into a 'black' ghetto at night, its just that most of them don't have a choice. It's not about color, it about class, status, wealth, power.
'This country is too hypocritical, and we can not adjust ourselves to its hypocrisy!' Nor should we have to!
This speech by Ture is a truly wonderful rhetorical piece of history that should be heard and analyzed the world over. There are some oversimplifications and misconceptions presented in the speech that we have tried to address but that does not diminish its gravitas. There is so much to be said about this speech but so little space provided to do it; therefore, we will rely on you, the viewers, the politically aware, the educated, to share your knowledge with the community below.

Im latino and I feel this man has more charisma and more power in his heart than anyone ive ever heard. this voice must be channeled to free the rest of the sleeping people of the united states. corporations have taken over. there is no doubt about it. its a matter of time before they decide to bring down the hammer and begin a new order of slavery

By the way, Black people have historically been the most exploited segment of the labor force in this country, bar none. Nobody would deny that others groups have been exploited, least of all Ture.

Well said. the issue is not about color, color is a distraction. The issue here is about class and by extension wealth and the access to wealth. Nationalities are politically fabricated identities that become social identities, but the human experience knows no nationality, is restricted to no nationality. Poverty, crime, injustice, labor, famine, tragedy, joy, hate, love, intellect, ... these things are restricted to no nationality, no color, no social group.

You are very welcome, and, if I have understood what you have said, I agree. Slavery was once defined by bondage, that is being less then human, being property (often used for labor amongst other things). Slavery has also been defined as serfdom - Middle Ages, Europe. Today, slavery can be defined as wage-slavery (as you have mentioned). Everyone who is not near rich, sheer rich, clear rich, or super rich, is a slave to 'the system'.
A far cry from what America was meant to be.

We must never be afraid to disregard, question, or challenge someone's thoughts/beliefs - Mr Ture suggested tha in this speech. If we don't question things and try to understand the world for ourselves, we wind up as 'parrots', regurgitating ideas and beliefs that are not our own, acting/living in a manor different from what's 'in our hearts'; and people's lives can be profoundly affected, from peer pressure to instances of war(Hitler).
    Question authority!
    And always be respectful!

Well slavery in 2012 is simple, everyone is a slave to the system. I don't like sounding too over the top but I meditated on the fact that we all are limited by our ability to make enough money to have our own freedom. It seems slavery now in our day and age can be defined as being dominated by power, influence, law, or those have affluence to push their own agenda to limit our freedom to be free. I am glad you asked me that, now I can think about that even more. -Moontron from NM

In the United States, we all are subjected to lies all day and everyday. We are all fooled to believe the way of life we are supposed to accept is the lives we live today. We are all led to believe that we must rely on the decisions of politicians to improve our lives now and forever. The food we eat is a perfect analogy to the reality we are sold. We go to a store that is well lit and designed to be comforting with purpose to make us feel well and at ease.

Ralphael I agree that the trickle down fallacy needs to be stooped, yet the fact is that in this kind of capitalistic/consumerist society, money always flows upwards into fewer hands, and money must always flow or our economy tanks. The business owner, the people of property, are always they ones who benefit in capitalism - especially when the low-class have a greater lack of knowledge (%wise) of financial planning or investment strategies.

The oppressors *were* white people. Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael) did not mean that all white people were responsible for suffering, but to pretend that it's a "generalization" that the white majority was indifferent or hostile to segregation is as ridiculous as saying that "evangelical Christians" are not part of the base of the Republican party, just because all evangelicals are not Democrats.

The food we buy is pre-packaged and wrapped for our convenience and in favor of our best interests. Everything the company of the product believes we need to know is presented in a likeable graphic with colors and words to have our eyes send signals to our brain to reach a sense of acceptance or vanity with this product. These practices in food is used in magazines, tv, ads, music, commercials, and even political aspects of our country.

I think about the segregation of color and than I see the segregation of income level. I am a firm believer that we the minority have become the majority. African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Asian-Americans have pushed the white skin into an unavoidable corner. It was not long ago that America was a very racist country by law and not by the choice of people. Our leaders allowed these laws to exist. We are all human though, color should not matter. We all live, dream and die. Nothing different.

The Blackalicous rap band has sampled this part of the speech : For us the question of community is a question of color and our people, not geography! Not land! Not land! Not land! Not geography! [applause] That is to say that we break down the concept that black people living inside the United States are black Americans. That's nonesense! We got brothers in Africa. We got brothers in Cuba. We got brothers in Brazil. We got brothers in Latin America......

actually he is right in what he said about giving money away. There are a number of statistical studies on violence in societies. the majority of studies show that its not exactly the poorest societies that have the most violence and crime but its the societies that have the largest wealth gaps and the worst wealth distribution and wage discrepancies that have problems with violence and crime. Of course the United States is near the top if not at the top of these studies.

What you are describing sounds like Pan-Africanism. To us, this is just another form of separation. While Pan-Africanism may down play nationality (which we like, hence the name), it just substitutes the separation of states for a separation of "race". To us, in our own bias, we believe that it is not about color, hair, speech, customs, ancestry, geography! etc; it's about all our brothers & sisters, regardless of color. Superficial differences are meaningless in the face of humanity!

Agreed moontrontron, but I must say that there is no proverbial corner for people with a skin color that has some kind of resemblance to the color white. Consider the words you are using now (minority and majority) and put them to the test. What is a minority, and what is a majority, and under what circumstances do those groups merit such titles and what values are you placing on those titles.

Once you do that, you might be able to respectfully ask 454mafia about his/her thoughts to better understand his/her opinions, instead of rejecting them by criticizing him/her. I for agree with 454mafia and can here a great deal of racism in this speech, both pro-black racism and anti-'white/Western' racism. The speech itself is about racism...
