Their biggest mistake was actually not signing Jordan, who also loved Adidas before they rejected him. Now, he has his own Jordan brand. Imo that's why a lot of athletes want to go with Nike. Jordan created a mold for them to follow, where they can eventually create their own brand if they remain superstars. Signing LBJ would definitely have turned Adidas around completely but it's their 2nd biggest mistake!

You have to take into account that Nike is local company when it comes to the US market.
That counts for a alot more then ppl give it credit for by knowing the landscape and culture you can be more intune with the word on the street and avoid the pitfalls or know the tree that has the ripest fruit befor anyone eles since the head office is only couple of states away things can be decided that much quicker to get a ok, Then say in overseas office that is out of tune with the local grapevine so might hesitate.
Most things are more tribal then they first appear and money necessarily is not always the magic wand that most ppl think it is ..
