Brilliant survey of a small scale clearing operation. Have seen horror stories where legacy forestry owners have engagerd with commercial companies and been left with stump littered rutted hellscapes where their children once ran the trails. Kenny's careful approach is not what happens in 95% of clearances of any scale. Great episode👍
Beauty piece of property. Flat, nice wood good stable soil. Nice video. Like the idea of the measuring stick. Dad and I used that method a fair amount.
I really enjoy watching these videos with Kenny. If he is anything like my little brother, you have lost a good pair of boots. I am guessing the people who continually complain all you need is a pair of forks. Have never used a grapple. Can they get away with just forks. Absolutely. However, they are not the proper tool for the application. I have used both in the woods and at a sawmill. A grapple is the safest option. Not only for the people but the equipment as well. I am almost willing to bet, it is the same bunch of moronic individuals who harp if you are not in a full regalia of ppe just because you looked at your chainsaw. Excellent content. Kenny and his Mountain Top Outdoors tee shirt was priceless. Thank both of you for the giggles and grins.
Out of all the videos uploaded the 1st few hours of 2024, and i am waiting in the Woodyard. Thanks for putting in the work and effort for us and taking us along too..😉👍
Estonian I remember. Now what too do with all the stumps…?😊 I noticed the boots on the first day thought you got him a pair, but now I know they were yours, I think Kenny wants to keep them.😊
Yep always hated dragging around a hammer/axe/hatchet for banging wedges, also hated searching around for an appropriate limb to bang wedges that had enough to pound the wedge but did not ring your hand as much as it did the wedge or did not break in half.😉hydraulic powered wedges work great but there was not always one around when needed.🤪
2 boys and their toys having fun. the tractors sure make it easy not like how my dad did it with a doodle bug a horse and a 48 ford tractor that still runs. lots of chains and steel cable . good memories
Nice work guys. Starting the new year off with a crisp, frosty 11 degree F. What we learned today: forks are for totes, grapples are for logs. You guys made pretty quick work of the Ken's woods project. GNI
The 72 series Husqvarna are the go to saw for a lot of woodmen , ever watch Bjarne Butler falling timber out here on the coast of British Columbia ? 👍🇨🇦
You don’t cut softwood for firewood ? I don’t have much choice , almost all my firewood is softwood , some birch and alder and rarely vine maple . I cut everything down to three inches , even limbs , some of the limbs on coastal trees are massive . The small rounds last a long time in my wood cookstove . 👍🇨🇦
I always praise the discovery of the wheel and the inventor of hydraulics. 2 of the greatest things ever. So as you can imagine a pallet jack is among my favourite tools. It combines both of the greatest inventions.
I am in the same situation as ken with my tractor I only have pallet forks and a bucket after seeing your grapple bucket in use i am looking for one now
Good morning HAPPY NEW YEAR 🥳 to EVERYONE. great video took me back to my younger day as logger work for peanut at $22:50 a cords knock down . Husqvarna 98 was thinking 105cc hey swing that all day from sun up 🔝 to sun down plus 6 day a wk and years . Like I say LIFE IS POOR IN THE 709 . Tks god we had our vegetables moose , caribou, polar bear , black bear 🐻 for meat 🥩 for the table. 😊 Tks god for processor and semi logging trucks. One processor = to 250 guys on chainsaw KEN and CHRIS . 😊
Happy New Year Chris / Kenny. Well, Chris that younger brother of yours certainly swings a chainsaw well. Years ago I used to fell some softwood species, but mainly large elm, chestnut, and beech. So, I have some experience! Anyone, who tries to tell you that a tape is better than what we call a ‘yard-stick’ plainly hasn’t done much repetitive timber work. Also, the grapple is the way to go. In my day, we had a ‘Volvo’ with a grapple as standard, but could also fit forks. Tell you the truth, in my opinion, to use forks instead of a grapple is asking for trouble, especially on bigger stuff. I have enjoyed the short series with you and Kenny, and sincerely hope we get much more. Kenny keep up the good work. Your own wood yard is well overdue and will be a total success. Regards Len (Devon 🇬🇧)
Good morning guys, yeah as far as Ken's measuring stick I will tell you that it works. My dad started out helping a guy build a house in the 40s and the cabinet maker came with a wagon and horse to measure up the job with only three sticks that asked his boss what's going on. It's boss said he can't read a ruler so he brings the sticks. Well, dad said 6 months later he pulled up with the wagon and all of the cabinets. They were beautiful and fit like a glove. Kenny from Western North Carolina
your right about the forks, you drop or loose control of logs a lot, or at least I do, I think you can do it with forks, but your way seems better, and I wish I had one.
Great video. I made a brush fence at my land last year. To mark where the property line was basically, so the new development people would know, to maybe keep them out of my woods. So far so good. Cut a white birch down in the spring years ago, was just like a water fountain out of the stump. 👍🏻👋
I like the way you guys kept the tops in the same place. that made piling up the brush a lot easier. After watching your videos, I don't know what you would do without a grapple. That thing is soooo useful.
Remember when you first got the grapple and tried to move a truck load of logs? 3 hours later, you had only moved half. You have certainly come a long way...great work!
@InTheWoodyard for a log load of fire wood, it would definitely work. 33-ish foot is usually what I send. Sets bunks for about 30-32 foot or so. About 8 cord at 88k gross. . For mill logs there just to picky. The things they dock for is 2 sheets of paper long.
Wow you two got a lot of work done. I agree, forks are a waste of time for this project. I have done some work with forks and I quickly bought a grapple like you have. Much better. Thanks for the video.
I completely agree a grapple is less headache than forks. I'm very well experienced with forks from fork lifts telehandlers loaders and skid steers. With that being in some nasty terrain in the mining repair industry. There is thousands of times I would have paid good money to have a thumb for that ice covered piece of steel pipe that you chase with forks. Some people will never get it. That grapple has saved you so much back and headache. Have a great new years
I love my HAIX boots! I wish I could have joined you this weekend at Ken's. My new 550XPG would have loved to just take care of those branches. - Tyler
This kind of goes back to your old video about what chainsaw would be your only one. He should be using a smaller lighter saw for the limbing and the big one for bucking. He doesn't have anyone to impress. Might as well take it easy on his body. I will say though, your guys stamina for your age is impressive.(not calling you old, just happen to be half your age lol) Love the longer videos
@InTheWoodyard yes but you guys aren't doing this for a living lol take it easy on your bodies so you don't wear them out any faster! I got paralyzed at work when I was 21 and pushing my chair around is taking a toll on my body
Doing the edit on this part after the other parts had already aired worked very nicely. You were able to answer a lot of the early questions! Brush, brush and more brush😩... Happy New Year Chris. Thanks for many hours of entertaining content. Staying ahead, planning different things, a second channel, editing and everything else that we don’t see make it all work. Looking forward to ‘24. New ideas, new content and more fun.
Happy new year. Great logging video. And I agree the grapple sure works great. Yes spruce sure has lots of limbs, that's where I really like my old line skidder for is put my blade down and run them over, doesn't get them all to the tree but still makes a difference. Cheers.
The tapes release without you going back to the butt. I can see using a stick if you were cutting pulp. Our pulp market died before the logging tapes came out.
Nice work guys. Looks like a lot of fun. Even though I just got small tractor I putting 3 rd function on for my snow plow and later a grapple. I like the stick idea. Best part is can use as walking stick when trying get through the brush. Happy new year.
Happy New Year! Been Enjoying this logging series! I do a bit of work for my uncle like this and its cool to relate what you guys do to us here in RI. I run a stihl ms 441c which is 72cc with an 18" bar for firewood. He runs a husky 372 with an 18" bar and a 562 with a 16". All about chain speed, being lighter at the end of the day and not cutting the dirt, or into your other logs if cutting out of a pile!! Keep up the great work Chris and Ken!
Happy new year Chris!! First video I watched starting off the new year.. because it’s the place to be!! Really enjoyed the on location at Kenny’s series! Cheers to an awesome 2024 In The Woodyard and with all your adventures! Really looking forward to all your great content and I’ll be tuning everyday when I can to see what you’re up to!! Keep up the good work, guys! Yes, Chris! For what you guys are doing, a grapple all the way. Forks will get the job done, but not as efficient. Happy New Year!
There's lots of small plantation red and white pine stands in Maine from the 70-80's when all the boomers failed at farming. I think they used to give away seedlings to plant the old fields. Ive heard claims of telephone poles being made with big ones but nobody pruned them to get the quality logs they need. I did recently buy some pressure treated 4x6 red pine at home depot so some is being sawn at least in the North east.
Happy New Year! Awesome video! The measuring stick that Ken was using I love the idea. I've never used a loggers tape let alone seen one where I'm at. I use the saw as the measuring device. Keep up the good work guys! Happy cuttin.

That's not old! I was 64 when I cleared about 210+ trees working all sunshine hours 6 days a week. That kind of work schedule is common for Finns. Total weeks = 6. 😊😊😊😊

After watching these last few videos I have come to the following conclusion:
I think Kenny would be a whole lot of fun to be around.
Drunk or sober
Yup!
Love the grapple
Thanks me too!
That grapple works so nice. I only have hand made forks for my JD4400. Maybe someday I can get a grapple.
It is awesome to use! Get one!

your right about the forks, you drop or loose control of logs a lot, or at least I do, I think you can do it with forks, but your way seems better, and I wish I had one.

Yup, I am better but still need more set time !!! It is fun!
Thanks for the voiceover. Good stuff.
Glad you liked it!
I like the stick idea.
But I'm not in to carrying a 36 foot 10 inch stick, that's the average length the mill wants for export logs.
LOL
So make the stick 110.5 inches and make 4 measurements or a 88.4 inch stick and do 5 measurements....just an idea.
@InTheWoodyard for a log load of fire wood, it would definitely work.
33-ish foot is usually what I send.

Well Chris I think Kenny just got a pair of old new boots 🥾 for himself 😮😊❤
Haaa! He thinks so!
You are right about the need to reduce hours as you get older.
Yup, the body can only take so much as you burn out!
Wow you two got a lot of work done. I agree, forks are a waste of time for this project. I have done some work with forks and I quickly bought a grapple like you have. Much better. Thanks for the video.
Yup, it is nice to use!
Hi Chris. Hope you don’t mind the small correction. You were talking about Scotch Pine but it is Scot’s Pine.
My bad if it came out like that ...yes it is SCOTCH PINE!
The 20" bar is quicker, but the 24" looks easier on the body
Yup!
I must have been in pretty good shape to have chopped all day, full days, six days a week.
Yup, us to 20 years ago!
@InTheWoodyard
For me I have to go back 40+ years.

Good video like to see family working together. Have a great day be safe
Thanks!!
I think I would want LEDs on my loader arms. You can never have too much light.
He has lights there too.
Happy new year. The snowmobile club should stay on trails signs they could put a few signs up.
The clubs put up signs, not all snowmobilers obey the signs thus clubs lose trails every year due to inconsiderate riders.

In production cutting the 372 is THE saw the pros use, fast powerful, not to heavy not to wimpy. But yes we are as old as dirt! Thanks!

I forgot, that included bucking, hauling and burning these weed trees working alone. And still have my hearing, limbs and fingers. 😊😊😊

I am thinking maybe some dancing girls for 2024! Or maybe some new machines!
@InTheWoodyard lol, dancing girls would be nice, but I'm not sure how that would help production as much as hinder it!
Good Morning Woodhounds!! Happy New Year!!
