Saab 9000 - A four-wheeled airplane

  • Today, I’m going to tell you the story of the Saab 9000 which is the most Italian of Swedish cars. It was built from 1984 to 1998 on Fiat’s Type Four platform sharing it with Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema, and Alfa Romeo 164. But each of these cars has its own unique interpretation of the platform, and the Saab 9000 is not an exception.
Owners usually described Saab 9000 as an airplane. You press the pedal, and it starts to accelerate as if it’s going to take off right now. An incredible acceleration, very comfortable seats, very convenient driving controls, and a lot of room both on the front seats and in the rear.
In acceleration on a straight line, it was essentially faster than BMW and Mercedes Benz of that time. The Aero version of Saab 9000 was even faster than Ferrari Testarossa or a Porsche Carrera 4 in a 50-75 mph acceleration.
They were very reliable cars that can make 300-400K miles and more without an engine rebuilding.
Here is the link to a short interesting movie about the famous The Long Run of Saab 9000 at Talladega Speedway: • Saab 9000 The Long Run...

Just read today, that one V8 prototype engine was made around 1988 here in Finland by Saab-Valmet and Valmet Linnavuori factories. The project was kind of secret. When the engine was ready it was assembled to a Saab 9000 and also introduced in Saab Sweden. It never went to a production. Because of the small space under the hood the V8 engine was made by joining together two 4 cylinder engines together!

    • @wurstmotors
      @wurstmotors  Před rokem

They experimented a lot. There was also a convertible prototype, and it's a pity that they didn't put it into production.

    • @jounipenttila9908

@@wurstmotors Yeah. The Power output of that engine was 280 hp / 330 nm. The Saab could easily reach 250 km/ h. Weakest point in the powertrain was the original transmission.

Thanks for the video.I owned a combi coop 93, great.A 900 4 door manual, great.A 9000 turbo auto. The turbo engine and gearbox were amazing. The floorpan/chassi were the most flexible/useless that I have encountered.I just bought a Subaru Forester and even though I liked the strength of the early SAABS the fit and finish of this makes all previous cars look like junk.

    Respect brother❤
I absolutely love the the Saab brand
My Dad had 900 Turbos in the 80s then 900s with APC for engine management he ended up with a T16 AERO in the uk so 185bhp very quick car back then
My brother got hold of a 9000cse 150 bhp and threw a lot of money into it to make it AERO a seats wheels suspension and a 2.3liter engine made just over 300bhp
Really sad how Saab got sold off and just disappeared they were a proper car builder

2:32 mistake .. Enval did not design the SAAB 99 - that was Sixten Sason (Hasselblad camera)
Enval just did some work later for the CombiCoupe because Sason was sadly gone before 99 was released
the 9000 would have done better street performance by introducing a new rear axle by rebooting it as the CS Version
It would have been an amazing step to better Handling in any situation . In any other kinds : ONE of the best cars ever built and standing strong beside you many years with one of the best 4 cylinder engine that hooks up better than most 6 cylinders

It is correct for other SAABs. 9000 was built on an Italian platform, so the location of the ignition lock was determined by Italian engineers. On later models (like my 9-3) SAAB returned to the ignition between the front seats.
