I worked at a luxury jewelry, which the items are wayyyy more expensive and are seriously timeless and they don't age like a purse/handbag. That said, a man walked in he was wearing construction boots a plaid shirt and ragged jeans. I turn to my manager and gave him a look, he softly said. GO I didn't want to but did. The man told me he was looking for a diamond engagement ring, my first instinct was to show him the least expensive rings, instead of actually politely ask if he had an idea of what he wanted or a budget. I decided to sit him and bring out some gorgeous settings, some customers did look at him because of what he was wearing. He blew my mind as to how much he knew about diamonds and the specific diamond, clarity color and size he wanted, needless to say my commission paid for my rent for a year! He is a famous real estate developer and he had just come from a site my manager knew him, and that is why he wanted me to help him and get the commission. Two lessons learned!

@@5Heliotrope I don't think I belittled him, I did not treat him badly unlike the experiences being shared in here by luxury mostly purses/bags companies. I sat with him and brought the expensive settings. I did have my own reservations, but I never threw things on the counter, or was plainly mean. The incidents here are SA that basically told people you can't afford that or wouldn't even show a purse. I find extremely idiotic that you need to create a 'rapport' to buy a purse? or that you need to buy something previously to show you are worthy of a n H bag? When you walk into Cartier, Tiffany's, Van Cleef, Bulgary and more, where you can really get your $$$ worth I never heard of such stories, SA's at these stores you do not need to have a 'long time' or rapport relationship to sell you jewelry or luxury items. that could range from $200 to in the millions of $. And the doormen are there to. make sure no one walks with merchandise, LOL I rather have a. Tiffany or Cartier purse then

The best advice I can give is that it isn’t always true when an SA tells you that the item you’re looking at is the last one left in the country, company, etc. That is a common high-pressure sales/scare tactic used to make you buy the item due to FOMO.

    • @Handbagholic
      @Handbagholic  Pƙed 2 lety +12

Yes, this definitely adds to the pressure

    • @moreruffles89

This is so true. When I first started buying luxury and was told that there were a few or none in the country of an item I wanted. It was discouraging. But I refused to buy it for higher than retail price on one of those resell sites. And to add rumors of items being discontinued made me gave up hope for the item I wanted. Then one lucky day I see the item on the shelf and immediately bought it.
What I’ve learned was that SAs are being honest when they check their inventory, LV client advisors for example carry an iPhone/iPad with them to check their inventory and they’ll show you whether it’s available in the store or not. They even check the country to see where it’s available. However, inventory changes daily. So it wouldnt be there one day, but the next it can. It’s really random. And I agree with you that it is a sales tactic because knowing that something is a hot item that’s hard to get, it makes me want to get even more. I gave up looking for the bag i wanted, but knowing I couldn’t get it made me want it even more, very childish of me lol. So when I saw it I knew I had to get it because it’s so rare.

I was in a luxury niche that was located in a luxury dept store. I was just browsing. Another woman came in to buy. The SA totally ignored/snubbed us. The other customer was trying to make up her mind about a Prada bag. I happened to be nearby, and she was asking my opinion. We chatted for a while, and I helped her with her decision. She said that I was so helpful. The SA finally came over to "make the sale" and the customer called for someone else to ring her out. This has happened to me too. I live in a hot country so wore warm, but inexpensive, relaxed walking clothing on a trip to Canada. I do not get much wear out of winter wear so that’s not where I spend my money. Walked into Holt Renfrew’s beauty floor and felt eyes burning into me then I realised they were watching me like I was a suspected thief. Did another, slow loop of the whole store just to annoy them. 😆 Bought what I needed from the Chantecaille counter from the lady who had obviously drawn the short straw to serve me whilst her colleagues looked on and when she served me, we chatted and I could see her face change when she realised I was a tourist relying on one suitcase of walking/hiking clothing for a month’s travelling. I bought the one product I needed then left. I really wanted to buy more but refuse to pay for attitude.

Yet the Gucci SAs at two different places made me feel good in the same way. My partner went to the H store to buy a bag. It's a gift he wanted to give me for my birthday. He has been in luxury stores before but didn't particularly pay attention to anything simply because he is not interested in such. Typical I'm just here just to pay type of guy.
Him being him was wearing his normal white t-shirt and joggers with his eyeglasses. He is 25 but as an Asian, he looks like he is in his teens. He didn't know that he needed to contact our SA before coming so he just simply walk into the store where he was given a random SA.
He said the experience overall is fine. But he felt they are not too accomodating. It was different from his previous visit with me where we didn't line up to enter, were given a sit and offered food and drinks. They are also not too keen to put out the items that are not on display (he wanted to see the different colors in stock). The SA was answering his questions in a one-liner.
Then, randomly he was asked if he has an account there he said he doesn't have one but his partner has, and proceeded to share my details. He said it was a full 180. They suddenly are nicer and more accomodating. Overall, he was not very happy and just proceeded to buy what he wants then left.
He said he never felt that he was less important than other people in his life. 😔

My husband asked me to do that so I would know exactly what I wanted when it came time for him to buy my Christmas gift. I’ve gone into Chanel a few times and was either ignored or the SA was really snooty amd didn’t care to be bothered. Therefore, I have never purchased a Chanel bag from a boutique. I went this past summer and spoke with a nice gentleman but he pulled the oh things go really fast and the bag o was looking at of course was the last one. I wanted a coco handle and I was about to let him talk me into something else but I had my heart set on that being my first bag. I’m not a fan of the 19 and told him so , his response well this is the hottest bag. I don’t care it doesn’t fit my aesthetic. I don’t care if I ever get a new Chanel bag because I refuse to give my money to any company that doesn’t appreciate my money. Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Dior are always helpful when I go in. I have never personally done that myself but I can't understand how that can be perceived negatively. Yes, they're a luxury brand but what if that consumer had worked really hard and saved up to buy their love one a gift? It's reasonable for them to ask especially if they've never been inside a luxury store before. Regardless, they're still buying their products and may even recommend others to &/or return to buy more goods in the future. That's just my personal opinion. I do appreciate all these tips. I recently got back from vegas. I was treat horribly by the SA at Chanel and Dior (TWICE) at the Wynn. Both of them looking at me like i can't afford anything in the stores. They didn’t want to take the items that i wanna see. I was told by the SA not dirty their shoe when i try on the sneaker in Dior.
Well, I have great experiences with Chloe and Saint Laurent and bought more things than I planned.

I do have a collection of designer handbags and yes you’re right I did agree with the whole DON”T bring a fake into a designer store. However since the pandemic, I had stopped into a Chanel store on our way up from selling one of our condos. This was not the one We typically purchase from, so I didn’t know them and they didn’t know me, and boy did I get a taste of how their customer service can be based on assumptions, they made it next to impossible for me to buy anything, I did complain, but nobody called me after for a follow up and they did not care that they lost money. So in my opinion, they make way too much money that they don’t care if they’ve just lost sales AND, IMO, only contributes to increasing the sales in the fake market. I know a lot of people who can afford these luxury handbags, but refuse to be treated like dirt, or have to play the games to get them, so instead they buy the dupes. Designer Boutiques behaving like this are actually shooting themselves in the foot. Boutiques like Dior which are renowned for awesome customer service, make people WANT to save for that luxury item, because they make them feel special even if they don’t have the exuberant income like some others. I’ve been on both ends of the scale and I can tell you, customer service is still hugely important in how people will spend their money.

This is a Dior story, a novel, actually: "Mrs 'Arris Goes to Paris". Author, Paul Gallico. Published in the 1958's -- and yes, it is still worth it to read something of luxury brands before you were born :-). -- - and illustrated with humor and verve, it is the tale ofa London charlady who scrimps and saves to travel to Paris to purchase a Dior gown and the fascinating characters she encounters along her journey. . With a charming book! . As a teenaged, i lived in Paris when the book and my Mother insisted her three daughters read it as it not only for its plot, also for its insight remarkable in such a slim volume about class and quality. I shall always remember Paul Gallico's genius in creating a humble charlady, grey-haired and modest, whose spotless but work-worn hands touches with infinite delicacy and respect a gown of the very highest quality. Your Seven Kindly Do Nots can be encapsulated in one word: class. You have got it or you have it not!

The very first time I set foot in a Louis Vuitton store the doorman was rude and asked my husband not to film (my husband was planning to surprise me and wanted to capture my reaction) He was following us like we’re some kind of robbers or something. The first SA was not very friendly or enthusiastic in helping us, was just kinda shrugging us off, I was so embarrassed and uncomfortable that I wanted to leave immediately. And then one new Sales Associate, she’s very young started talking to me and I felt like she was friendly and kind enough to care and ask me questions about what kind of bag I like. I started feeling comfortable and started talking to her. My husband then proceeded to buy the bag I liked and even bought me a wallet through the nice SAđŸ„°

Why can’t a consumer ask for sale items. I see nothing wrong with this. I’ve walked into the Chanel store at Nordstrom and asked straight away to see the items on sale. It’s just business. I have money to spend and they’ve marked down the items already for purchase. It’s interesting that this video is suggesting we need to accommodate these brands with special care. Some of these rules are hilarious. Especially since these boutiques have a notorious reputation for not having the best customer experience.
If you’ve ever been in sales commission role yourself, there is zero guilt of not spending anything.

I actually have a funny story about LV. I live in Holland and Dutch people in general can be very rude and arrogant (not all of them) there is a street called the PC Hoofdstraat which is like bond street in London. So I was in the LV store in that street looking for a bag a scarf and something else. Anyway the SA was so rude and arrogant like she was the one about to spend thousands of euros and any question i asked she would make a face or if i asked her to see a bag she would roll her eyes her whole manner was just so awful it was appalling I think she literally thought she owned LV. So after having seen the items i was going to purchase and having decided on them her attitude changed (they work on commission here i don’t know if that’s everywhere) so she thought im quids in. But we have a selfridges just 10 minutes away with an LV store in it. So I said to her you work on commission don’t you? She replied yes. So I got out my mobile phone called the selfridges store asked them to keep the items for 30 mins and I was on my way to purchase them right in front of the SA. Her face was one of the best I’ve seen. And I just said to her and I do not think I’m above anyone or better than anyone but that’s how she was treating me and I buy a lot of designer items. And I just said to her maybe if you change your attitude towards your customers remind yourself im purchasing here your working here you’d earn more commission and said something to think about I’m off to selfridges to purchase my items. I left her with a red face and open mouth. But she absolutely deserved it she was looking down her nose at me the whole time.

Walked in, asked SA to show me if they had them, tried them, put them on the table for final look before making decision and then bought the one I liked more. I don't see any difference between that or buying shoes in some local boutique. I think if more people would get that mindset instead of being scared some SA would become more friendly too (I didn't have bad experience in any high end store, but reading some comments some people met SA that were quite pretentious and rude).
