I was euphoric after this game. But, it didn't take long to realize Faust was in way over his head. I put the onus on ND for hiring a high school coach. To Gerry's credit he had winning records against USC and Michigan. Yet, he was 0 and 4 against Air Force?
I made the trip up to South Bend from Louisiana. even Though ND spanked LSU I enjoyed being in a Historic Stadium with top notch Tradition. Geaux Tigers.
He was surrounded by a lot of undermining staff who resented him getting the job. He recruited part of the 88 national championship team. His story would make a great movie
@@danieladkins5242 There was naivete on both sides. Faust was naive enough to think it would be easy to coach at ND while Father Ted and Father Ned thought anyone could coach the team. Faust admitted that firing Tom Backhus after one season was a mistake. Backus didn't get along with some of the other assistants. Faust says he should have kept Backhus and canned the other guys who didn't get along with him.
The next week's Michigan game. Michigan takes the ball and takes it well in ND territory. Coach Faust calls TO - brings the boys over and makes an impassioned speech. The defense goes back out there and stops Michigan cold! LOL - I remember thinking, wow I got a superman coaching my team! Well, it wasn't meant to be. But with all I've read and seen, he's a good man.
Dad was ND class of 52. He really thought the world of Faust coming in especially considering he came from a Catholic powerhouse HS program. But he never got any better or seemed to learn from his college mistakes. Those blowouts by Miami hurt my dad's soul.
Gerry Faust is a legend. His story would make a great movie. Moeller High School to Notre Dame. Happy ending was being humble enough to step down and watch some of his recruits win a national championship under another great coach.
ND would have been excellent had Devine not left. I don't think he was fired. He wanted to spend more time with his wife who had MS. Too bad ND didn't hire Holtz instead of Faust.
Yuck, the "Madonna blue" jerseys. Gerry Faust is a great man. No one loves ND more than he does, but he was an awful college head coach. P.S. I wasn't even born yet when Faust coached. I was only a child when Lou was in his prime, and when I caught the ND bug.
@@danieladkins5242 True, plus many of his losses were by a small margin and could’ve been wins if a few plays went his way, so it’s not like ND was getting blown off the field on a regular basis. ND always had a tough schedule with very of the cupcake games most major programs enjoy. In the 80s ND regularly played Miami, USC, Michigan, Penn State, Purdue, Michigan State, LSU, Pitt (a strong 80s team), Florida State. Faust was definitely a disappointment, but not nearly as terrible as many make him out to be. It was actually impressive for a coach with no college experience to have won as many games as he did. Unfortunately, Norte Dame was one of those high profile programs that demanded excellence from day one. Any loss was considered a massive failure. Faust would’ve been better off starting as an assistant or coaching at a smaller school before taking over at a prestigious school

I attended this Game. As an LSU fan I didn't enjoy the Whipping ND put on my Tigers but it was exciting being in the Cathedral of College Football.
All the euphoria over Faust lasted one day - this day. It was all downhill after that.
He was the epitome of the flash in the pan

I was a student at nd during this game and right tackle #71 was my roommate Phil Pozderec,
did he eat all your food, he was huge....

This was the high point of Faust time at ND, it was pretty well down from there
Too bad, Faust's career as ND's coach wasn't as good as people thought he would be. Thank god for Lou Holtz.
Faust recruited part of Holtz national championship team.
I hope this is a foreshadow of a future game between these two. Hope ND does well under the new coach.
That 1981 team would have won the national championship had they not fired Dan Devine
Rudy

Devine retired after the 1980 season
@@8avexp he was pushed out.
@@johnharman9560 Devine was never fully embraced by the ND community. He was under a microscope because he succeeded a legend.
I was at that game and the next one when we played terribly. I thought Gerry was going to do fantastically well after that LSU game. Not to be.
Are you going to UL the 1985 and 1986 games as well?
Sure am! Be sure to check back every day so you don't miss 'em.
Faust broke my heart again and again. Thanx for nothing Jerry.

Faust helped recruit part of the 88 national championship team. Most college football coaches have no hand in a national title.

No better man than Faust could be less successful and that's too bad. Often the best people don't get the best breaks
Faust was way in over his head. He thought the job would be easy. Surprise, surprise.
