Best Hike Near Asheville, NC? - Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain

  • Join me as I hike to Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain during leaf peeping season.
This popular hike is arguably the best hike near Asheville, NC. Unfortunately the popularity of this hike has led to a influx of people and traffic and I actually do not recommend it anymore due to the crowds. If you decide to experience this hike I recommend going first thing in the morning on a week day. The parking was chaos - cars were parked everywhere which made it tricky to get back down the road to leave. I will say although there were so many people but I did not see any trash on the trail. I am thankful people are practicing Leave No Trace.
Please note: The trailhead is not accessible much of the winter since the Parkway often closes for snow or ice.

This was awesome! A bummer that it's become overcrowded, but I can certainly understand why. I'm going to be in the Asheville area in a couple of weeks... Any restaurant recommendations you'd be willing to share?

I actually for once do not have restaurant recommendations- I usually just head that way for hiking and have not really taken time to enjoy the city. Do you already have certain trails on your list? I listened to the papa bear podcast yesterday - it was so good!

@@LetsGoLiz No worries! Roan Mountain is on my "must do" list. Otherwise, I'm narrowing it down. Sounds like this one is maybe a little too busy for my preference. Watched your Looking Glass Rock video, too! I'm open to suggestions... I've got three days around Asheville. Thank you so much for checking out the podcast, and I'm really glad to hear that you enjoyed it!

@@OutOnTrail Roan is the best! You will love it! If the blue ridge parkway is open during your visit I hate to discourage you from Black Balsam/Tennent/Shining Rock because it really is a gorgeous trail. If you go on a week day morning it should be ok - be sure to continue on the trail to Shining Rock ashevilletrails.com/shining-rock-wilderness/shining-rock-art-loeb-trail/ Here is the link I use to keep up with Blue Ridge Parkway closures www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

@@LetsGoLiz Awesome! I'm looking forward to it! Well, I won't rule out Black Balsam, then... I'll let you know what I end up settling on. Thanks for the tips!

How long does this hike usually take?

It can take less than an hour if you turn around at Black Balsam but you can keep going to Tennent and even into the Shining Rock Wilderness and make a day of it. It is a beautiful area.
